Characters: Calvin Ryan and Harrison Boot Setting: About 9:30 PM, Axis City University Content: Work Safe Summary: Cal and Harrison meet one another
Cal enjoyed his Philosophy of Law class, although he'd never quite been able to put his finger on why. He disliked the fact that he had to memorize the date of every case they studied, he could never keep the names of the court Justices straight, and, of course, it didn't help that the professor's voice remained in a constant monotone. Still, something in his gut made him return to that classroom every Tuesday evening, and years of experience had taught him that it was generally better not to question his gut, particularly on matters of enjoyment. So return he did, and with his homework always completed even though he knew it would never receive a grade. If he were a real college student, he mused, he'd be doing much better than the slackers around him who would sleep in class and write notes to one another in the margins of their case summaries.
He packed up his books slowly, as he did every night, puzzling about the meaning of justice. How could something that was supposed to be so static hold so many different interpretations? He shook his head wearily as he slung his beaten-up messenger back over his shoulder and ambled out of the classroom. He wasn't naive enough to believe that the world operated in black-and-white terms, but the idea that the morality of the whole world was painted in shades of grey unnerved Cal.
This thought, however, was abruptly cut off as he slipped on a wet patch in the floor and crashed unceremoniously onto it. He sat there for a few seconds, blinking and surprised, now on eye-level with the sign that warned "Caution! Wet Floor." It was a sign that Cal had put there himself before class had started. He couldn't help but chuckle at the irony.
