Site Update
Okay,

We have fixed the one major bug that was plaguing the development server. We are nearly ready to push out the new update. The one remaining problem lies in notifications. If that is not critical for everyone I am willing to push this update out the door as is. Though since it has been so long since we have updated, I can't guarantee that the site isn't going to experience some weird errors and possible downtime as I work out any bugs that might show up.

Right now, the update will bring media embedding, some long needed bug fixes, and a newer update page. I am really concerned about getting the bug fixes, including the fix for comment rot, out the door asap.

Please let me know how you all would like to see me proceed. I am okay with doing beta testing and some bug fixing work on the live site if you all are too.

You have my go ahead, Squeaky. :) I already adore IJ more then any other site but if something can be made even better? Go for it, I say. :)

MEDIA EMBEDDING! That is a small thing but I excited bout that finally being put into effect here.

I hope all the bugs get worked out but I am okay with beta testing it.

Media embedding & an end to comment rot, woo! I say let's see how she runs & debug from there :)

Media embedding and bug-fixes on the fly sounds great to me.

Sweetheart, I have NO idea what any of that meant - I just push the buttons - but live-betaing I do understand and I'd much sooner have a site with occasional hiccups than no site at all.

You do what you feel you need to.

Anything you can do to fix comment rot sounds good to me.

Although I have to say I know of two different comms having big events over the weekend. Obviously you can't keep everyone happy but it's something to mention.

I say go for it now! I love tracking/comment notifications something fierce, but I can be patient! And maybe I'm misinformed, but if you do the updates as they are now (and no tracking), the fewer potential bugs than if you added more to the update?

I say bring it on!

Well, comment notification isn't a dire need, as long as it does come back eventually. I know I, at least, would be willing to put up with a few bugs/downtime/whatever to see a huge update like this for the site, especially since you're giving us fair warning about it. (That way I won't freak out if I can't get to IJ for a bit!)

If you have time to test, my preference would be to test in a development database before pushing the update into your production environment. But if you don't have time or anyone to help you, then by all means shove it straight into prod -- just be sure to give lots and lots of warning, including on Twitter.

Thank you so much for everything -- you're a brilliant admin and an all round cool guy.

The end to comment rot (and other bugs) would be very welcome indeed! I know a lot of ppl will be happy about media embedding too.

My vote is for going ahead with the code push. There's always going to be some oddness showing up when code is changed. I've never heard of an update on just about anything where there's no glitches. *g* We trust you and know you'll deal with them as quickly as possible.

Test away! I'm with the other person; as long as the notifications come eventually and don't just poof into thin air, some down time won't kill.

Fixing the amazing disappearing comment problem will make a lot of people very happy. So will media embedding functionality.

I think you've demonstrated that you'll keep working on further fixes as quickly as you can.

Go for it!

*admires*

That sounds really wonderful. Comment rot is a bad, bad thing, but if it takes a few more days to work out the notifications, maybe waiting would be a good idea.

Personally, I am fine with beta, bugs and a bit of downtime. We know why it is happening. In short: if the site is broken, you fix it and we're all happy...

Good luck with it, I hope it is going to work out well and doesn't break the Interwebs. (And yay for getting tracking and especially tags fixed, I hope they are in this update too!)

Comment rot is a serious bug, I'm for fixing that ASAP. It's hard to find and squash bugs, the more changes the worse it is. So staged releases sounds good to me. Warn us a day or two ahead, please!

I am really anxious for notifications, but I can live without them for a while longer if I have to. Definitely fix comment rot, though.

Will this put the tracking system live too?

I think the code update is important and I'd like to see it happen, even if there are going to be some bugs that will need worked out :)

Oh, an impending fix for comment rot pleases me SOOO much!!! It's my number one problem here, although I'm sure the other features of the update are important to other users, like media embedding.

I don't know a single thing about the tech side of things, in terms of live bugs or testing or what not, but I trust you to proceed as you see fit. Thank you!!

I think most people understand that updates almost always have bugs that need to be worked out. I'm fine with you shoving it out the door - the sooner it's done the quicker the bugs can be identified and fixed. I'll just make sure to check/bookmark posts where I leave comments until comment notification is up and running smoothly again. It's not that big a deal. good luck!
