At this point Alice couldn't say when she'd started running. Maybe this morning or a few days ago in Biloxi while she was standing over the unkempt remains of her human grave. A simple tombstone crumbled around the edges over an empty space that had never been meant for her as far as the records showed in the asylum she'd been turned in. The place where she was discarded to be forgotten by what had been her family because of her 'chronic episodes of delirium.' Visions, though of what back then she didn't know. Had she seen something she wasn't meant to she'd always wondered. Could she have been better, kinder, or done anything to keep the love of that first family? But then she would think of Jasper and the Cullens and the place she’d found with them. Maybe she was always meant to die and be something else because death had given her so much she’d never expected. So much she wanted to protect.
She’d been trying to do that ever since she'd discovered the Volturi were after them again. Barely escaping their treacherous net when she’d first caught on to what Aro was planning, but somehow he was hiding from her. Alice still remembered that look in his eyes on the day she’d showed him his death if he chose to try and take Renesmee from them. The dark promise of a hundred terrible things upon her and everyone she loved glittering in those blood red eyes. It had unnerved her more than she’d ever let on though she knew that Jasper could sense it. But she’d always thought that if anything happened she’d at least be able to see it coming and help her family prepare. Now it seemed she couldn’t do anything to stop it, this new vision of the Volturi coming to settle the score, though how soon or far away from now she couldn’t say. She had been at her wit’s end with worry when she’d finally retreated to Mississippi and the grave of the girl she’d been, wondering again about family and their future which was fracturing into a hundred possibilities because of her indecision.
As her cool fingers had touched the withered stone she’d caught another fragment, not of the future but the past. One mixed of blood, the pain of turning, and a face she hadn’t had a name for, but knew that one day she’d love; Jasper. While she could continue to run, hide and fret over what to do for the future her present wasn’t worth living without him and their family. Whatever would come would come, but in that moment she hadn’t wanted to be anywhere else then in Jasper’s arms. So she’d turned and started running west for hours, days, only stopping when she had to until she finally reached an area with a network and sent out a signal to her family. Seeing their words of comfort on a tiny electronic screen didn’t compare though to how she felt when she saw him again for the first time from her perch on a low branch of a tree surrounding his cabin. With her last text sent she took off with a graceful leap that brought her right in front of him, facing the other vampire. No more words were needed as she reached for him, arms crossing behind the strong line of his neck as she leaned forward and kissed him, letting all of the love she felt free for him to read.
