Heather didn't care to wait anymore. The people at the prison were nice and all but she didn't know them that well. By nature Heather could be shy and after living with Jed for so long, she had learned to stay away from other people or else it didn't end well for them. Old habits were hard to break and even though she lived and worked with them, she never really connected with any of them. She wasn't really part of the community and it was easy for her to just leave. There was no buddy, she didn't even sign out. She wasn't really into following the rules in a world where there were no rules anymore. She would come back and sleep because it was warm and there was a bed and she would do her job because that was the price of room and board and food but she wasn't settling in like everyone else did. She mostly stayed aloof on the outside.
The only person she was really connected to in town was Abigail and she was off being a vampire. Dr. Lecter was cool and had helped her out, had even told her that Abigail was actually her cousin but there was a staunch old world feeling to him that set Heather's teeth on edge. Something was off with that guy and she could sense it but she didn't say anything because Abigail loved him and he had helped her out once. She wasn't above going to him if she really needed something at the prison but it wasn't like they were having tea parties or anything.
She was armed with two handguns as she walked through the forest. The snow as finally starting to melt so it wasn't as noisy a trek as it could have been. That was good because noise attracted predators, it attracted zombies. She had seen some stumbling around in the mud but she hadn't seemed to catch any of their attention. Jed usually took care of the zombie killing but Heather had killed a few of them in her time and wasn't afraid to do it. She just wasn't interested either.
Stopping short she came across a tree in the woods that had a corpse nailed to it. Either they had been up there for awhile or it had been a zombie. There was an arrow through it's head, so a zombie was very likely. Whoever had shot it had hit it hard enough to impale it to the tree. Heather shivered and pulled her jacket more tightly around her as she walked past the rotting corpse and towards Katherine's.
She had never actually been to Katherine's before but she had lived near it in the beginning. The place freaked her out because there were young attractive women living here and that was exactly the kind of prey that Jed liked best. Heather had walked past it once or twice but never been inside. The house was huge, a mansion really but that didn't phase Heather because she had a mansion too. It was in Texas and overrun with zombies but she technically owned it.
Walking inside she asked for Abigail and was lead up to one of the bedrooms. She knocked on the door and hoped Abigail wouldn't be disappointed by a surprise visit. "Hey," she said when Abigail came to the door. "I didn't wake you up, did I? I just really needed to get out of the prison for a little while."
