The trip into town with Zoey several weeks ago had put thoughts into Elizabeth's head that hadn't been there for some time. While the younger girl had panicked in the beginning at the news that she was going to have a baby, Elle's wheels had begun to turn. She'd always wanted children, but the timing was never quite right. When the zombie virus broke she knew it was damn near impossible to have a child in these conditions. Some were born, but it was usually always by accident. Elle never considered any child to be an accident, but maybe unplanned was the better term. Life took you by surprise sometimes and you had to roll with the punches. The thoughts she was having weren't necessarily serious, but they were there nonetheless. She hadn't voiced them to Peter yet of course because as in their other lives, the timing was never ever right.
Peter's invitation for her to join him in his tower for the night was more than welcome. She'd invite herself to join him sometimes, but this time she could prepare and gather a few snacks for the long night ahead. Elle could see the worry lines marked on her husband's face lately and that in itself worried her. So many people suffered here, so many died. Children and others that were far too young to die and it broke her heart each and every time.
Most of the kitchen staff on duty were busy cleaning up after dinner and getting a few items prepared for tomorrow's breakfast. She had the morning off so she could spend the time sleeping after the shifts spent with Peter in his tower. There wasn't much to take with her, but she managed a couple mugs of coffee and some other small snacks dropped inside a bag and she was off towards the fence. Peter was already at his post of course, and she made herself at home. She was wearing her heavy coat but there were still a couple of blankets left for them that she'd kept up here during other long nights.
"It may get up and walk off on its on, but it's caffeinated and it's hot." Elle smiled and handed him his own cup of coffee but not before kissing him first. She and the others had been in Everett for months now, but as far as she was concerned she was still making up for time lost while they had been apart. "Anything exciting so far?" Nothing yet, he'd confirmed to her and gratefully took the coffee.
Pulling up the extra chair, she settled in next to him and took out a pair of night vision binoculars. She had no idea where they'd come from but they helped out a lot during the night watches. They sat together for a while, both talking back and forth, and both looking out for any hint of a bump in the night. It was definitely closer to his original line of work than hers, but in Elle's mind it was hers now too.
