Who: Isabel and Max
What: Checking out the spaceship that Carla and Kennedy saw
When: Today
Where: Up in the mountains
Warnings: None
Isabel was in Max's cell hassling him about checking his phone more often a mere ten seconds after Carla had posted on the network. He hated it when she annoyed him about his phone but well pestering was a big sister's job and Isabel didn't believe in doing anything halfway. She finally managed to corral her brother out of the prison. They both agreed that it could be a hoax or a mistake but that it might be worth looking into. Neither one of them knew Carla well enough to say whether she would pull a prank like that or not. Isabel was astounded that so many of her fellow prisoners had no idea that they were living among aliens. Mozzie was the only person who knew what was really up.
She thought it might be a bad joke until she heard something beeping from far away. It wasn't a pipe bomb, the tone was different and the beeping was slower, steadier. Something about it called to Isabel and she could tell her brother felt the same way. Isabel held out her hand and the zombies all clawing at the device scattered, thrown back into trees and dirt. Max knelt down and dug the device out of the dirt. She recognized the symbols carved into the smooth metallic surface immediately.
"Max-"
"I know."
Both of them recognized the device. They had seen similar devices and sometimes things just spoke to them. This was one of those times. Isabel could feel how at home she was with the object even though she had never seen it before. Max held onto it and took a few steps in one direction and the beeping slowed, when he turned in another direction the beeping began to speed up slowly.
"It's a guide," Max said softly.
The two of them followed the strange map and Isabel was glad that she had put on a hooded jacket and her boots before going to bug her brother. While Everett was slowly thawing out, it was still a little too cold for the girl from New Mexico. Although Isabel wasn't truly from Roswell at all. She was from Antar and she had no idea what the weather would be like there. She knew there were two moons, she knew other bits and pieces but it had never occurred to her to ask about the weather.
It started beeping furiously as they rounded a mountain bend and the Evans siblings shared a look. They had been standing here before or at least in a similar place with the granalith. It fit perfectly into the side of the mountain and a door swung open. Max lead the way, bright glowing light emanating from every side of the ship or shuttle or whatever this was. It brought back so many memories of those damn pods they had crawled out of.
"Max, what is this? How did they even find us here?" Isabel whispered as she explored the cabin.
"I don't know."
Suddenly Max's foot slipped over the right spot and he felt the button beneath his shoe. He shot Isabel one panicked look before a hologram flickered to life. The Evans siblings both stood shocked and still for one second and then grinned wildly as they recognized him. It was Michael.
"Hey, guys." Michael waved at the two of them and gave them a look that was just so Michael it almost made Isabel's heart break right there and then. "I'm sure you're surprised to see me. You weren't here when they came to Roswell. Kivar's dead and they need us to run the place. They wanted you but since you're MIA they got me instead. I figured zombies or running our own planet and it was a pretty easy choice to make." Suddenly Michael turned his head to the left and scowled at someone. "Would you chill? I'm going to tell them. I was getting to it." Michael sighed, rolled his eyes and stared straight ahead again. "Maria wants me to tell you that she and Kyle are here too and that we live in a castle."
Tears flooded Isabel's eyes and she pressed her hands to her mouth. Everything was just so Michael. The two of them had been such good friends for so long. When Michael said he had no one to come for him she had promised that she would always come for him. That promise had eaten her up since they had parted ways.
"This ship will leave for Antar in exactly three weeks. So say your goodbyes, do your thing and then get your butts up here. Okay? The ship pilots itself so all you have to do is get on board." Michael turned to the side again. "Oh my God. How am I supposed to concentrate with you yapping in my ear?" Michael huffed and looked straight ahead again. "Maria says don't forget to wear your seatbelt. Okay. See you soon. And... I miss you guys."
With that, Michael's hologram dissolved into thin air leaving no trace that he had ever even been there.
"Oh my God. That was Michael. That was really Michael!"
"We don't know that for sure, Iz."
"How can you say that? Didn't you see him?"
"Yeah, I saw. I saw a hologram. It could be a trick."
Isabel shook her head in disbelief. She was unwilling and unable to believe that this was some kind of hoax. She didn't have to think very hard about where she would be in three weeks. This planet was covered in zombies and her family was broken apart. This was a chance for them to be together again. She wouldn't leave Max alone here though and she doubted Antar wanted Vilandra, the betrayer and not Zan, the king. They were a packaged deal. It did bring up questions about how they would be received. They weren't the original royals, they were hybrid clones. Isabel wasn't Vilandra and Max wasn't Zan. They were their own people influenced by the people they had been cloned from.
"It's not a trick. You know this isn't a trick."
"I just saw them not that long ago," Max snapped turning back around on Isabel.
"Yeah, months ago."
"Liz... was there."
Isabel was silent for a full minute. She missed Liz too, they had after everything become good friends. But Isabel couldn't miss Liz the way that Max did. She was his wife.
"She was human. I'm not sure I'm ready to give up on them. The rest of them."
Isabel reached out and took Max's hand. "They're not Liz."
"I know."
"She would want you to look out for the people she cared about."
"I know that."
She sighed. "Well, we have three weeks to make a decision. We don't have to decide anything right now. Come on. Let's go back to the prison." She tugged him out of the ship and the door closed making it look like nothing more than dirt and gravel and not a doorway to intergalactic travel. She couldn't believe that after all this time she might really be able to go home. For so long home had been Roswell, New Mexico. Isabel was especially close to her parents. But she was almost positive that her parents had been lost to the zombies and now she had a chance to reunite with the rest of her family. That really would be like coming home.
