Who: Laura and Krissy
What: Making her first beta
When: Nowish
Where: Infirmary
Warnings: Laura's saving a dying teenager so you know...
Laura had been an alpha before for a few years before that night when Peter changed everything for her and for Derek. The only beta she had in her small pack had been Derek, another born werewolf which meant that Laura never had to turn him. Their werewolf gene had been passed onto all three of the Hale siblings by their mother and when Talia Hale died the alpha status had automatically been handed down to the eldest living relative. Peter had been technically alive at the time but in a comatose state in the hospital and badly burned by the fire. Laura had unwittingly inherited it all. She had always known the day would come when she would take over as alpha of the Hale family but she thought that day wouldn't come for a very long time. When she had been made alpha of the remaining family she was barely eighteen years old and her beta had been sixteen. Laura didn't know what she was doing then, she barely knew what she was doing now.
Krissy was sixteen, the same age that Derek had been when he had lost everything except his older sister. Lydia was asking Laura to save her and how could Laura deny the request? She didn't know Krissy very well but she knew her well enough to know that she would be a smart and resourceful beta, an asset to the pack. She was a hunter which would work to their advantage when it came time to train her, assuming she lived through the transformation as not everyone did. But Laura was not looking for power as some who had come before had tried. Laura was only here to save this girl's life. She was holding it now in the palm of her hands. If Krissy survived this Laura would not just be her savior but her alpha. Laura was already an alpha but the betas of the pack all belonged to Derek. Derek who had looked up her with those haunting green eyes, asking her what they would do next, where they would go, how they would hide from the hunters. She didn't know what color Krissy's eyes were, she realized. It was an absurd thought but she wanted to know what color they would be when they weren't beta yellow.
One of two things was about to happen as Laura's eyes turned red. A deep lasting bond was about to be formed between Laura and Krissy or Krissy was going to die. She was young and strong and Laura didn't think it would be the latter but she had to recognize it as a possibility. Gently, she brushed a few strands of dark brown hair away from the young hunter's forehead. The clamor of heartbeats from the other side of the curtain filled the empty spaces surrounding Krissy's heart monitor. Lydia and the rest of Krissy's family was standing on the other side waiting for Laura to make a miracle, to make a brand new girl.
Like her mother, Laura had the ability to fully transform into a wolf but she didn't make the full transformation now. Half transformed her ears elongated and her eyes burned red as her face transformed partially into that of a wolf. She opened her mouth, exposing her fangs and felt a howl at the tip of her tongue but she held it in. There was no need to alert every single supernatural creature within a fifteen mile radius that Laura was having an emotional reaction to watching a small brunette teenager who reminded her of her siblings slowly slip away into death.
Her teeth clamped down around Krissy's shoulder. But unlike Needy, Laura didn't tear and rip at the flesh there for maximum damage. She simply clamped down with her jaws hard enough to penetrate the thin layer of the hospital gown Krissy was wearing. As soon as she tasted blood in her mouth she released.
Laura pulled back away suddenly and had to tip her head back to control herself. She had never done this before and she didn't realize what a rush it would be. There was a reason that Krissy's friends were on the other side of the curtain. She hadn't wanted an audience, especially since this was the first time she had ever done such a thing. She didn't want anyone interrupting once they saw Laura's face and her fangs sinking into Krissy's flesh. Mostly she had wanted a moment alone with her beta in this first true moment between them. Now all she could do was wait.
