Once Bruce had run more tests and Rogue was sure that there weren’t any voices in her head aside from her own, she and Logan had left the base for his cabin. It had been a bit of a relief in all honestly. As much as she missed seeing her friends back at the prison, she wasn’t ready to face them, especially not Roman or Shelley. She needed time to put herself back together, to feel comfortable in her own skin again, and to come to terms with having killed an innocent person. The joy she had initially felt when she’d realized that the treatment had worked was short lived. Even though she was better and finally in full control, it didn’t erase the things she’d done before Logan had found her.
He insisted that she drop the guilt, that none of it was her fault, but it didn’t feel that way. It was her power that had hurt Roman and it was her power that had killed Sam. How in the world wasn’t it her fault? If she’d been stronger, she would’ve probably been able to prevent any of that from happening. When it had been Logan’s life on the line, she’d been able to stop the leviathans from draining his life energy, so there was no way she could let herself off the hook. Of course, Logan never let her stew in her own guilt for long, not if he could help it. He’d taken to being at her side as much as he could and whenever he’d sensed her getting down on herself, he did his best to distract her and make sure she was okay. It worked more often than not and it was little wonder that it did when they’d known each other for so long.
Still, as much as she was grateful for having Logan around, and god was she ever grateful, Rogue needed some time on her own. It wasn’t easy to convince Logan that she would be fine but she eventually wore him down after promising to come back to the cabin before sunset. A promise she was intent on keeping. Memories of the masked man were more than enough to keep her from wanting to stay out in the dark alone.
She had hours before it would get dark, though, and now that she was alone, Rogue was set on practicing her newly acquired powers. Using super strength came easy, it was just there so she didn’t have to concentrate or think about using it when she picked things up that she never would have dreamed of just a month ago. It was actually pretty cool and if she kind of went overboard with throwing and breaking heavy objects, no one would know. Flying, though, that was another thing altogether.
“Crap!”
Rogue botched her attempt at landing and instead of coming to a stop on her feet, she lost her balance and fell forward, face first. It was a lucky thing there was a thick layer of snow to soften the fall or she would have been forced to explain a bruised face to an already overprotective Logan. No thanks. She quickly moved up on her knees and brushed snow off her face and chest with a grin. Despite landing pretty much on her face, it was better than previous landings when she’d fallen on her ass. She was nearly positive there was some bruising there, but that she could easily hide at least.
She slowly got back up on her legs and brushed the rest of the snow from her clothes, ready to give landing another try. Not before having some fun in the sky, of course. Rogue let out a slow breath and felt a new sense of energy wash over her body and lift her from the ground. Getting off the ground was the easy part and within seconds she was up in the air again, her dark hair whipping around her face as she built up speed. It was thrilling to say the least and she felt utterly free. It was easy to forget everything that had gone on up here where she was seemingly untouchable.
She lost herself for what could have been hours or even minutes, it was a little hard to tell, when she remembered she was supposed to be practicing her landing. She slowed down as she descended towards the ground but not nearly fast enough. At the last second, she managed to roll over before hitting the ground on her back. The impact rattled her teeth and left her a little on the dizzy side.
“Fuck,” Rogue muttered as she blinked up at the grey sky overhead.
