Who: Eve and Grant What: Zombies trying to eat a baby slayer and a SHIELD agent When: Today Where: The wilderness Warnings: Zombies go boom
Life had been pretty great for Eve for the last two weeks ever since the whole ominous death comes for you every night crap. The week after she was brought back to life was all about realizing she had these new powers and how not to break off door handles whenever she tried opening the front door of her and Chloe's cabin. The next month was spent hating the fact that some higher power had decided she needed to be one of these chosen warriors. It had gotten her killed in the first place and now she was reliving it every single night until she felt like she was going insane. Now? Now she was enjoying life for what it was. Living.
During the month of hell she and Chloe had moved in with Michael and Fiona. No matter the reasons, she was grateful to be there and she wondered at first if they would want the two young slayers to leave once they weren't reliving death over and over anymore, but no talk of their moving back into their own cabin ever came up. In fact, they were talking more about training and learning how to fend for themselves. More talk of supplies that they could gather around town. Little tricks here and there too which Eve found the most fascinating. The two former spies didn't hide that they liked their guns and explosives. Well, Fiona didn't hide it. Michael at least tried not to be quite so obvious about it even if it was pretty useless. The area outside the cabin was set with traps just in case a zombie tried to wander up during the night when they were all asleep. Fiona had already had to replace a couple of the explosives outside and she'd let Eve watch her. The new slayer was very attentive during those lessons.
You could never be too prepared for what life would throw at you, right?
They'd also come through with their promises to help them fight and shoot. Each were experts at both and Eve didn't have to go back to the prison to go through slayer training. She might have been one by birthright or destiny or whatever it was called, but saving the world wasn't what Eve wanted to do. She liked what Fiona had said during one of their first conversations. Helping people mattered too and it wasn't only about the big things. One little thing to the world could be one gigantic thing to one person. To Eve, those moments were just as important because Michael and Fiona had done a little thing for Eve and Chloe by letting them move in and it had meant something huge to both girls when they needed it the most. Neither was comfortable going to stay at the prison full time but they needed the strong personalities to look up to even after the death stuff. Eve didn't feel pressured to be anyone or anything and she appreciated that.
After a shooting lesson with Michael, she grinned at him when she finally hit all five targets in a row and did it in her fastest time ever. Those drink cans hadn't known what hit them. He wasn't always the most talkative but he gave her a smile proudly and told her she'd done a good job and she'd beamed back up at him. See, it was the little things.
They were all finished and Eve stayed outside while Michael put up their guns. They had all sorts of weird hiding places that Eve would never remember if she was the one responsible for them. She still had the one gun in her hands that they'd given her and decided to see if she could find anything to eat for the night. It was winter so game was few and far between especially since the animals had gotten the heads up that there were a lot of people hunting in Everett, but she was so wired from doing well while practicing that she thought she could go one step farther.
Hunting didn't bother her. She'd grown up eating certain kinds of game that her father would bring back from his trips. Besides, trips to the supermarket for some ground beef were few and far between, so a girl did what she had to these days and if that meant shooting Bambi so she wouldn't starve? Then so be it.
She wasn't too far from their cabin as she leaned up against one of the trees with her gun, but the woods were eerily quiet. She pouted a little and her impatience was starting to kick in as she decided to turn around and head back home. That was when she nearly ran right into some lady in long dark red robes with beautiful long red hair. Eve nearly fell back on her backside, but caught herself and smiled nervously up at the lady.
"Oh. Um, hi. Sorry about that, I didn't see you." Or hear you. How creepy was that?
The lady just smiled at her. "That is no problem, dear. Are you all alone in the woods today?"
Eve nearly blurted out a yes, but she could hear Michael and Fiona shhing her in her head. "No, my friends aren't far. We split up to see if we could get a better shot off if a deer came by, but I haven't had any luck so I was going back. We were supposed to meet back at our spot." A secret spot that she'd never, ever tell.
"I see. My apologies for interrupting." The lady gave her a questionable look, and all Eve thought was how weird this whole encounter was. "Would you like me to walk you back? The woods can be very dangerous. You never know what or who you may run into."
Eve smiled nervously. "No, thank you. Like I said, I don't have to walk far."
"Very well." She reached out and touched Eve's cheek lightly. "It was very nice to meet you, Eve. Take care."
The lady began to walk off and Eve did the same but then she froze suddenly. How did she know her name? Had she given it to her? No, she was sure that she totally hadn't. "Wait, how did you-" Eve spun around in her spot and was going to ask the lady how she knew her name, but no one was there. Um.. okay?
Still feeling weird but wanting to get the hell out of there, Eve started off again at a quicker pace back to her cabin. She kept the gun tucked safely under her arm for any sudden movement and kept her eyes on full alert. She was expecting the lady to follow her but what happened next definitely was not what she had been expecting.
"There she is!" Someone shouted in a weird, slurred voice from behind her. Eve looked back and saw about five people with guns meet her gaze and then immediately began running her way. Um what? Who were these people?!
"I get the legs. You had them last time," another voice said. "They're the best parts."
"Fine, but the arms are mine. This one is young and she'll taste better than the sorry meals I've had lately."
Oh crap were these vampires?! But, wait, why did they want her arms and legs instead of her neck? One more look behind her and Eve saw that despite their fast movements and the fact they were talking to each other, these guys were... zombies?! These were not normal zombies! Zombies didn't talk! They didn't run! And they definitely didn't carry guns!
Taking off at a run, Eve was forced to go in another direction from the cabin to get gain more distance, but she heard the zombies starting to grunt and run behind her too. She was a slayer and she should have been faster than them but they were gaining ground way too fast. She turned her head back to see how far away they were when she suddenly face planted into the snow after tripping on a tree root.
"Get her!" The zombies shouted.
Eve yelped and was back on her feet and did the only thing she knew to do. They could run and talk and hold guns, but they couldn't climb could they? Only one way to find out. Gun in hand, she went to the first tree that looked okay to climb and scurried as fast as she could up the tree. She ignored the scrapes she was getting on her hands and knees and got onto a branch that seemed high up enough in the air. The problem with this plan was that the zombies soon surrounded the tree and called out to others to join them. Oh, great. More. She shot at one of them and luckily hit it square in the head, sending it dead to the ground. Nothing but big versions of soda cans, right?
"I'll kill all of you if you don't leave me alone! I'm not tasty! Go away!"
