Ric was looking forward to seeing Meredith. He felt kinda good about it. But right now wasn't the time. Right now his time was with Jeremy and Elena and they were catching up the best way they knew. With Jeremy in his room, the door closed and with Elena in her room, the door closed, which left Ric in the living room in front of the fire, a glass of whiskey in his hand. And it had become a nightly ritual to go out and get wood for the fire. It gave him something to do and it gave him time to get out of the cabin for a breather.
He was on his last load, having been back and forth a few times from the cabin to the spot and he let the wood drop where he kept it, right outside the front door. He grabbed a few logs though and brought them inside, tossing them in the fire. The shock had already worn off for him. He was alive - and not a vampire, which he was grateful for. Being alive was one thing, but coming back as a vampire, he wouldn't put himself through that, or Elena or Jeremy. He wouldn't live that way.
Ric heard a little movement and he noticed Jeremy walking to the kitchen. He looked through the cabinets and once he found what he needed, he was gone again. In his room, the door closed. Ric sighed and looked back at the fire. It would have been easy to say that things would get better, but how could they? They were in a zombie apocalypse and for the record, Ric despised those things. They were disgusting and he didn't mind the few times had to shoot them to keep them away from the cabin.
Turning around, he headed back to the chair and almost jumped when he saw Elena standing there. So much for being a hunter, his skills were obviously rusted at this point. "Elena, hey," he said, giving her an unsure smile. It was hard to read her face, so he didn't even try.
