Heather was doing something normal. She hadn't done that since she had worked at the supermarket back in her shitty little town down south. It was a place she didn't think about anymore, filled with people that she didn't think about anymore. Her best friend sleeping with her boyfriend, how tawdry, how fucking boring. She chopped meat all day long for the deli and she painted at night and she fucked and she fought and she drank and she played pool and was the karaoke queen on Saturday nights. She always brought down the house with her version of Barracuda.
That was back when she was normal which was a really fucking long time ago. Heather felt like most of her life had actually been Edith's. She never felt right in her little town, living in her shitty double wide with her asshole parents who were always on her about something. But here she was, putting on skates and getting out on the ice with Abigail. She couldn't believe she was actually doing something normal. And like a newborn fawn she carefully slid out onto the ice, wobbling this way and that feeling nothing short of unsteady on her new legs.
"I can't believe I'm actually ice skating," she complained but she was loving it. It was nice to have a friend again. Friends were few and far between with Jed in the mix. Heather had tried to have friends at first but he never let her keep them for very long. The only friends he had ever accepted were Shelley Godfrey, who had almost broke Heather's damn heart when she had left, and Abigail. Shelley was obvious. She didn't exactly look like everyone else and Jed seemed to relate to that maybe. Heather wasn't sure. It was impossible to accurately guess what Jed was thinking since he never said anything. But Abigail, Abigail should be dead. Heather was just counting down the days until Jed took Abigail away from her too. It was really only a matter of time.
Abigail was skating circles around Heather but she grinned and tried to teach herself the basics, occasionally letting Abigail grab her hand and drag her around their section of the lake. It was fun, it was even fun falling down. It had only taken an hour and her cheeks and nose were rosey red but she was skating circles now. She was really getting the hang of it, going faster and faster, daring herself to be braver at every turn. She realized her fatal mistake one second too soon as she leaned too far to the left and her right leg tried to compensate.
She heard a distinct snap as she went down but felt nothing for a minute. "I'm okay," she told Abigail dizzily. One look at her ankle told her that she wasn't okay at all. Weird. She didn't even feel that even though she could see the bone twisted at an abnormal angle.
