It had all started out innocently enough. Troy, one of the men she kept on staff was complaining that the vampire he had been with all morning had seemed "sick or something". Katherine had insisted that vampires didn't get sick and Troy had insisted back that they do and this one had. She supposed there were a variety of maladies that a vampire might have. If she had been bitten by a werewolf she would act sick and if that was the case she wasn't going to be coming back here. It would only be a matter of time before she went insane unless Klaus was feeling generous and if there was one thing Katherine never trusted it was Klaus. It could have also been a curse, Katherine thought. She would look into it but at the moment she wanted to be left alone.
"Go eat something and go to sleep," she said, using her compulsion on him. She tried to use her compulsion on him but something felt wrong. Her mind and eyes didn't automatically sync up with outward suggestion. She could feel the difference and so could Troy. He told Katherine he wasn't really hungry before he disappeared upstairs. Something was very wrong.
She walked outside to the wood pile by the side of the mansion. Thick tree branches that had been chainsawed down by the vampires who worked for her. They made quick work of keeping her stocked with firewood. She grabbed one of the thicker branches and moved her wrists quickly with enough power to break them in half. But they didn't break, they didn't even crack. Her wrist kind of hurt actually. Angry now, she heaved the branch against the side of the house but the effort did no damage to the house or the branch. She was exhausted with the effort of it and her mind raced and panicked. She ran back into the house and at the speed of a human when she should have been zipping around in a blur. Something was very wrong.
The first place she went was the supply room where she packed three coolers full of blood that were being kept in bags for the mistress of the house. She hoped three coolers would be enough. If they needed more than they would just have to take them. What really sucked was carrying those coolers one at a time to her truck and loading them up into the bed of it. Those things were heavy especially after she had packed them full of blood. This was unacceptable, whatever this was and she really fucking hoped that whatever idiot witch was responsible for this was about to be burned at the stake.
Heading into the part of the house that she used as her own personal quarters, Katherine leaned down and shook Elijah awake in the master bedroom. "Elijah, get up." Katherine's voice was laced with the kind of urgency that roused Elijah quickly. "Pack a bag and get ready to leave. We have to go." Katherine had made a lot of enemies in the last five hundred years. She could only imagine how many the original family had made in the last thousand. If all the vampires had been stripped of their powers then they were both defenseless. She made a mental note to go and collect some guns before they left. She left Elijah to figure out how he had woken up different as she packed her own bag full of clothes and other supplies she would need.
"Let's go," she said to him after they had both packed a bag full of things they would need. Katherine wondered idly just how many suits he had managed to stuff into that bag. It was a sad world when even the vampires had to rough it out in the wilderness like helpless humans.
Katherine went back and collected a couple of rifles from the supply room along with some ammunition. She had no idea how to actually shoot a gun but it couldn't be that hard to figure out. Morons managed to shoot guns all the time. She was walking back towards the truck when she lingered in the doorway. Should she tell anyone she was going? Maybe warn Dante about what had happened and how she was abandoning them all.
On second thought, no. Katherine hadn't survived five hundreds of being chased by looking back. She just loaded the rifles and ammo into the bed of the truck and slammed it closed. Climbing up into the driver's seat she turned the engine on and pressed her foot to the pedal. She turned to Elijah and gave him a look. Where they were going? She had no idea but she didn't stop until after they passed the You Are Now Leaving Everett, WA sign.
