She smiled politely when Liz told her she had never heard of The Spectator. "It's okay," she said. "I don't think it was a big deal outside of New York." Which was a lie. The gossip magazine sold like hotcakes across the country. It didn't hurt that the empire was built by the van der Bilts either. But only people who were interested in gossip would read a gossip mag. It was no Scientific American. And she hadn't even mentioned the part where Nate had fired her.
Serena's face lit up when Liz explained that she lived in Roswell. Okay, now that was cool even by Serena's standards. First of all, she loved the desert. There was something mysterious and ethereal about it that had always drawn the tall blonde to it. And on top of that there was just the stigma of Roswell.
"Max?" Serena smirked as she gave Liz a knowing look. Now, they finally had something in common. Serena could dish about boys all day. It was one of her specialties. "Tell me about Max. What made him so interesting. Was he an alien?"
The last part had been meant as a joke but there was something on Liz's face that made Serena take pause. Were aliens real? A year ago she would have laughed at the idea. A year ago she would have laughed at zombies and vampires and werewolves too though.
