He was in his makeshift cell turned art studio when he started painting her. Neal had been in the middle of a New York City skyline piece when he scrapped that and started from scratch. Blonde hair and a beautiful face became his vision and he didn't stop until it was perfect. At first he hadn't been sure what the outcome was going to be but when he saw Penny's face there staring back at him from the canvas he was filled with a love that he couldn't shake. She was so bright and full of smiles. No one could compete with the joy that radiated from her.
Neal felt a little silly presenting her with the portrait of herself, so he decided to keep that one and find something else for her. He knew she appreciated the wine selection when they'd had the party, so he spent all day Thursday making the perfect bottle that he thought would suit her. The supplies and equipment were limited, but he did the best that he could and was pleased with the end result. He was feeling pretty damn good about the situation when he woke the next morning and made the final touches to the wine.
After his shift, he showered and dressed in a pair of black slacks and white shirt. He didn't often dress up unless they were having a party, but this was a special occasion. Neal was all about making a good impression and he knew how to look the part and charm himself into someone's heart. Penny was already in his, so he only needed to make sure she felt the same way about him. He took a little extra time in front of the mirror, but when he was ready he had the wine bottle, two glasses he'd taken from the kitchen, and a pack of cards in his pocket.
The cards were for a little game he wanted to play with her. Penny liked her poker games and he wanted to throw an old-fashioned spin on it that they weren't able to do in the group games. This called for something a little more private.
Strolling down the hallways with a smile on his face, Neal stopped at Penny's cell and smiled when he saw her in there alone. Perfect. He leaned against the edge of the doorway and flashed her a trademark Neal Caffrey smile.
"Hey there. I finished up making this and you were the first person I thought of when I wanted someone to taste test it for me." Shannon was usually his official taste tester, but Neal saw no one but Penny right now. "What do you say?" He asked and held up the bottle.
