Who: Peter Burke and open or can stand alone
What: on duty
When: now
Where: his tower
Warnings: zombie killing?
Peter was pulling extra shifts ever since they lost Nate and Matt. He didn't know Matt all that well, but Nate was on the sentry team. He'd worked with him on plenty occasions. The boy had been just a kid, and it was tragic that he suffered two deaths. First he died during the Glory battle. Then he killed himself. It was a lot to process.
Truth be told, even in this apocalypse, even having worked with and seen various supernaturals, it was hard to wrap his mind around the vampire process. All the vampires he met were already vampires when he met them. Nate had been human. He was a young man at the peak of his life. Then he was a vampire. Something everyone knew he didn't want to be. What a tragedy.
Standing in his tower, he kept watch of the perimeter as he thought about the losses plaguing the prison right now. Clint Barton had to kill his brother in self-defense. Matt was killed trying to help his friend survive. Nate died because he couldn't live with the guilt. The grief reached out and overlapped, and it was a miracle people were able to come together to help cover those who needed to take some time off. It was also a miracle people were still standing. The prison was safe, yet it still kept experiencing traumatic events.
He found himself thinking of his wife. Was she okay? Was Canada truly safe? Or was it like the prison. Safer than the rest of the places around it, yet still not truly safe. How could any place in the world be safe given the current state of things? He wanted to believe Elle was safe though. He needed that.
A zombie moan broke him out of his maudlin thoughts, so he turned his attention toward the sound. A well aimed shot took out the threat, and he found himself almost hoping it was the beginning of a hoard. Better to eliminate threats than to worry about the ones he could not see coming.
