"Serena!"
Serena woke up with a start in her bunk thinking Nate's familiar voice nothing more than a dream. It had been a long time since they had slept next to each other. Not since before the big battle with Glory when Nate had died and become a vampire. He said he wasn't ready to be that close to her just yet, that her heartbeat, her scent was distracting, he was afraid he would lose control. Which was why when she opened her aquamarine eyes and saw him standing there a slow lazy smile crossed her beautiful mouth. Even first thing in the morning, Serena looked like a bedraggled angel. She scooped some of her fluffy blonde hair out of her face when she finally realized that Nate wasn't smiling back.
"Are you back in the prison?" she asked him. "Are you ready to come back?"
"Serena..." he started and then she noticed the tears in his eyes. Alarm bells rang inside of her head and she sat up quickly. "I made a mistake." When he reached out to touch her she saw the blood on his hand. Horrified, she looked up at him again.
"It's okay!" she suddenly said, taking his bloodied hand in his. "Damon says that it's common for new vampires to make a mistake. It's okay."
"No!" He jerked his hand away from hers quickly. "It's not okay, Serena. I made a mistake. A really really bad mistake. It's not okay. It will never be okay."
"Shhh." She soothed him or at least tried to as she rubbed his back. "We'll figure it out."
He turned to look at her then and the look in his eyes was filled with pure hatred. Dan had hated her, Blair had hated her, even her own brother had given her that look before but not Nate, never Nate. Innocent sweet Nate who always looked for the best in everybody. Suddenly he grabbed her by the arm and pulled her out of bed.
"Whoa. Where are we going! I don't even have shoes on." She was only wearing a tank top and a pair of pink short shorts. Nate didn't seem to care as he pulled her down the hallway until they stopped in front of a cell. "What?" she asked when they stopped. All she saw was Matt sleeping in his bunk.
"Look closer."
Serena crept closer to Matt and pulled the blanket away from him and saw that there were two puncture marks on his neck. His body was cooling and he wasn't breathing. "Oh my God. You need to call for help. We need some healers, or give him your blood!"
"Don't you think I tried that already?" Nate said coldly, his arms folded over his chest. "What did you do to me, Serena? Why did you do this to me?" He was shaking, on the verge of losing control and Serena felt guilt sweep through her.
"I'm... sorry. I didn't mean for this to happen." She rushed towards him. "Nate, I swear I never meant for this. I just didn't want you to die. I was selfish. I didn't want to lose you."
She reached out to touch him and he grabbed her wrist. "Too late. I can't come back from this. I'm sorry but I can't." He turned her hand over and lightly kissed it. His emotions were changing so quickly that it was difficult for her to keep up. And just as suddenly he turned his back on her and started walking away.
"Nate. Nate!" She rushed after him, walking as quickly as she could and glad that for once she wasn't wearing heels.
"Go back to bed, Serena."
"No!" she shouted as she followed him out into the prison yard. She grabbed his shirt and forced him to look her in the eye. "We can get past this. You made a mistake."
"You think they're going to just let me back in. They're going to forgive my mistake?" He gestured to the prison. And well, he had a good point there. Serena was pretty sure the prison had a no killing people policy.
"Fine. We'll leave together. We'll go somewhere. We'll find somewhere else. You're strong enough to protect me and I can keep you fed. Nate, please. Don't you remember our wedding day? Do you remember what you said about hope for the future?"
"Don't you get it, Serena? I didn't mean to kill Matt. It was an accident. How long until the next accident? How long until you're the next accident?" Nate's eyes searched hers. God, she loved his eyes. They were the color of the sky on a sunny day. She loved every part of him and it killed her to see him in this much pain.
"You won't. You would never hurt me."
"You don't know that. I'm sorry, Serena." He put his bloodied hand up to her face and cupped her jaw. "You are the only thing I ever did right. I never regretted marrying you. Not for a second."
"Nate, no." There were tears streaming down her face now. "No. Please. I can't do this without you."
"You are still the most beautiful amazing alive person I've ever known. But I'm not the man you knew. I'm a monster and I can't live like this. I'm sorry, Serena."
He pushed her away hard, so hard that she staggered back and landed on her backside on the grass. It was too late. Nate had already taken his wedding band off, the wedding band that Bonnie had turned into his daylight ring. She heard his scream ripple through the air as he lit up like a human bonfire. She wanted to get up and tackle him but his words had cut through her and she was momentarily paralyzed as she watched him burn. She buried her head in her knees and cried her heart out next to the ashes of what used to be Nathaniel Archibald, Prince of The Upper East Side.
