It had been awhile since Gunn had seen Angel. Awhile meaning that he hadn't even talked to the vampire since the whole Glory incident had gone down. Gunn had made an effort to reach out to Dawn but the moody teenager had ignored his attempt and out of respect for her and out of guilt he had left her alone. He hadn't engaged her in conversation, he hadn't talked to her, could barely look at her but he was watching. Out of the corner of his dark eyes he was always watching and if anybody and he did mean anybody messed with the kid? He was going to have to open a whole can of of Machiavelli on their asses. The whole being seen and not heard thing was pretty easy after growing up on the streets. Gunn had gotten real good at blending into the shadows and just stepping out when shit needed to be dealt with.
The old Gunn had made a raging comeback. All of that law knowledge they had stuck inside of his head seemed to disappear along with Lilah herself. It made him sad but only because it was Fred who had to pay the price for all the mumbo jumbo lawyer talk that was inside of him. If she had to die, he should have kept his mind sharp, he should have made it mean something. But Fred had died for nothing, nothing save for a blue meanie who was probably out slaying scores of zombies right now. If Gunn couldn't make up for Fred's death, maybe Illyria could. But with Illyria out of the picture and Angel living outside the prison, Gunn felt solely responsible for Dawn. It was his fault that Glory had found her. He was the weak one. He had promised he wouldn't talk and he had anyway. Not only had he let down Angel but he had gotten Buffy killed.
Gunn had to be strong, he had to be a stone wall. He had withdrawn somewhat from Claire too in the last month or so since Glory had been taken care of. He hated that she had seen him all beat up and hurting not on the outside but from the inside too. It was hard to make love to a woman who had seen him at his lowest and knew just how bad it could get. He was always distracted. He was always worried that somebody might break in and snatch Dawn. He hated that Angel probably hated him now. The inner turmoil within the man who once ran a vampire killing street gang from the sewers was palpable. And when other people started picking up on it? It was time to mend some fences.
He thought about talking to Wes about it but decided to go straight for the source. He signed himself out and headed to Angel's cabin which wasn't far from the prison which was why he wasn't concerning himself with getting a buddy. Connor could yell at him later if he wanted.
"Knock, knock. You better be home and not out munching on Bambi yo."
