Spencer Hastings thinks you need a babysitter (worry) wrote in zombieslogs, @ 2013-05-16 14:42:00
Who: Spencer and Toby What: Meeting for the first time in over a year When: Today Where: The tree outside the prison gate Warnings: Angst
Spencer hadn't been able to think straight since the day she had seen Toby. Even talking to Emily hadn't done much to calm her nerves because Emily was right. The Toby they knew would have revealed himself right away or would he have? Toby could be just as secretive as all of them could be. And every single thing he had said or done since had Spencer second guessing both herself and Emily. Was he still the same Toby as they had known? Or had becoming a vampire changed something that was intrinsically Toby? Despite her experience with vampires via Matt and Katherine, Spencer didn't really know how it all worked. Some vampires were good and some vampires were bad and some walked a shady in between moral line. Like Stefan or Damon whereas Caroline and Tyler and Elena seemed to be more on the straight and narrow. But that was all Matt's perception second hand. Maybe Caroline and Tyler and Elena were all covered in darkness too. How could she ever know for sure? Vampires were new territory for Spencer Hastings, the once know it all of Rosewood, PA.
Now Spencer knew nothing. How long had Toby been following her? Watching her? When Ali's ghost had hinted that Toby might be A was she right or was she just being her usual bitchy self? What about the picture that Gossip Girl had sent her to find in that pharmacy? She could only assume that Toby had been working with Gossip Girl. Was he working with A or imitating her? Had he seen her? Had he watched her struggle? Spencer might make survival look effortless but that was just the Hastings way. God damn it, she hadn't even been able to escape that cult without Matt's help and if he hadn't come along there was no telling where she might be now. Probably forced to be a love slave to an eighty year old cult leader's father. Had Toby watched her then? Had he witnessed her stumble and fall along the way? Had he seen the secret tears she cried at night when she thought nobody was looking or listening?
Yes, Spencer was settled now. She was happy with Matt who was good to her, the perfect boyfriend actually so sweet and kind and always putting others ahead of himself. She missed Toby and she would always love him, he had been her first real passion. That didn't mean she was incapable of moving forward with her life. Spencer had taken a lot of hard knocks on the road from Rosewood to Everett and things had changed. Had Toby seen it all? Had he seen her bend to near breaking and pull herself back up by the bootstraps? Had he been in the shadows watching?
Was Toby A?
Spencer slowly approached the tree that reminded her and probably everyone else of death. There were bodies buried here, nobody that was ever close to Spencer but bodies all the same. People who had died, some defending the prison. Death hung like a cloud over them as she approached the lone hooded figure leaning against the tree. She didn't know what to say at first so she just looked him over and had to bite back tears. She had thought he was dead and as it turned out, she was right. Her dark eyes met his, blue like the sky on a perfect cloudless day.
"Why?" she finally managed to choke out. "Why did you leave me your jacket to find?" She hadn't brought it with her, not yet willing to part with it.
