Melissa was bored. It was becoming the story of her life actually. Zombies had frightened her at first, terrified her as they chased after her groaning and moaning like some incarnation of a horror movie. But once Melissa had figured out how to use her magic to fight back, zombies became a fear of the past. She had tried to find her father in the early days of the virus but he had gone to work one day and never made it back. And when she failed to find him she had tried to find the other members of her circle, notably her best friend Faye but that had been a fruitless effort too.
She had begun to think that she was meant to be alone, to drift from city to city in a haze of magic and boredom until she had met Dawn Summers. The two girls had become good friends and what Melissa lacked in shooting skills she made up for in magic. She and Dawn had protected each other and while Dawn was nothing like Faye had ever been, it had been nice to have a close friend again. That unbreakable bond of sisterhood had always been important to Melissa. But it wasn't always as important to other people as boyfriends were, or aversion to magic. Melissa figured Dawn must have had someone in her past who had gotten a little too carried away with magic. It was the only explanation that didn't hurt. Because if it wasn't the magic than it was just her.
Reuniting with Diana and Adam was a good thing. She had been friends with them since she was in diapers and at one point she had been especially close with Diana. But Diana had Adam and things changed after that. Diana had Adam and Melissa had Faye. Things had changed when Cassie had joined them in Chance Harbor but now with the group split apart, people were falling back into old habits.
By pure coincidence she had found the Jeep parked out in the woods. Someone had done a pretty terrible job of trying to cover it up with branches and leaves. With one wave of her powerful arm, the branches flew to the side and she stared at the Jeep. It wasn't her first pick when it came to cars but this one was obviously still in working condition or else someone wouldn't have gone to all the trouble of hiding it. Maybe she could use the car to head back towards Chance Harbor and look for Faye.
Melissa slid behind the steering wheel and looked down at the ignition. No key. She began to go through the inside of the Jeep, checking the usual spots for keys- the ashtray, the visors, the floormats. Nothing.
Whatever. Melissa Glaser didn't need a key to start this car. She closed her eyes, her hand covering the ignition as she willed the engine to come to life.
