"Yes, I was here. I was raised and went to school there but for the majority of my adult life I've lived in the states. Montana and Pennsylvania mainly. The larger cities are struggling and some are worse than others, but the villages are managing to survive as best they can." Dimitri didn't explain how he knew how his home country was doing, but if John Ross was staying at the inn then it was possible that he may find out eventually.
The reaction was a little expected and the question was a good one even if he was thinking about it in the wrong way. While most vampires in the prison were made, dhampirs and Moroi were born.
"Half human, half vampire or a dhampir. No one can become half vampire as far as I am aware, but we're born. My father was a vampire and my mother was like me, a hybrid of human and vampire. We're mortal and we live generally as you would and blood isn't a part of our diet. My father was what is known as a Moroi vampire. They're also mortal but require blood in addition to normal food. There are more differences, but that is the simplest explanation. My race originated when humans and Moroi relationships were common but that was a very long time ago."
They were still outside of his cell, so he pulled his silver stake from his duster pocket. If he was wanting to learn more about fighting demons then there was no time like the present. "Most dhampirs are encouraged to become protectors or guardians for the Moroi. We have enhanced strength and they are probably the opposite of how you would normally picture a vampire. They have enemies, other vampires known as Strigoi, and it's with this that we kill them."
John Ross still looked like he needed to take a seat, but he seemed to recover quickly which Dimitri respected. "It's a lot to take in at once, I know." He gestured forward and they continued their tour through the rest of his cell block.
