Who: Spencer and Emily What: Finding Toby's jacket When: Today Where: The woods and then the prison Warnings: Shouldn't be.
Spencer had fallen into a routine of sorts. She and Matt had been back and forth to Katherine's so many times now that they felt comfortable going without Caroline. Not that Spencer minded the blonde vampire's company. Not in the least. Spencer really liked Caroline. But the blonde vampire no longer had to rearrange her day to escort her and Matt back and forth. Spencer was an expert marksman thanks to the ridiculous amount of time she spent practicing her shooting and Matt might be a human but he was a quarterback. They were a stronger duo than they looked.
It was on the way back from Katherine that Spencer spotted something out of the corner of her eye. The snow was starting to melt and she saw a dark piece of material sticking out amid the dirty white landscape. "Hold on," she said to Matt as she walked over and pulled the jacket free. Her eyes widened as she held the jacket in front of her. Her heart skipped a beat. It couldn't be. No. She was imagining it, she was hallucinating. Toby couldn't be here, this couldn't be real. She felt tears prick at the corner of her eyes when she saw the dark red bloodstains on the leather. She opened up the jacket and started rooting through the pockets but didn't find anything. But she recognized the tag and when she held it close to her, she could smell him.
Was it her imagination? It also smelled like mold and must and dirt and snow. But underneath all of that there was the unmistakable scent of Toby. Matt was looking at her like she was insane and maybe she was. He wouldn't be the first person to look at her that way. Spencer had a habit of taking something and running with it. Like a dog with a bone she would never give up, never surrender.
"I have to show this to Emily," she said to Matt who by now was used to Spencer's strange and commanding ways. She loved that about him. That he was always there when she needed him, that he knew when to ask questions and when to just nod and go along with whatever mission Spencer had set herself on.
As soon as they got back to the prison, Spencer kissed Matt goodbye and raced off to find Emily. She wasn't in her cell which meant she was probably working housekeeping. And that was exactly where Spencer found her, sweeping the rec room. "Emily!" Spencer shouted, probably a bit too loudly but she was excited. She was probably tracking in more dirt for Emily to sweep but it wasn't a thing that Spencer thought about. Instead she thrust the jacket into Emily's waiting arms.
"I found that on the way back from Katherine's. Emily, that's Toby's jacket."
