The smell of seasoning drew Cassie from the confines of her bedroom and out into the open, though small, space of the apartment the three shared. It wasn't much, but compared to the forest and zombie-infested world she had called home before, it was a definite slice of heaven. Plus, she had Adam and Melissa there; the company kept her in touch with the human world. It was something Cassie feared she lost during her time in the woods with only the undead and scavengers for company. Where she slept with one eye open always and a veil of magic around her, kept up by her own fear, and obvious lack of trust.
The blond wandered into the kitchen just as Nick faded, the last of his blond hair disappearing into thin air as she stepped inside, and immediately her thoughts went to Melissa. The other girl had been in love with Nick and when he died, she took his death the hardest of them all. It was even worse when he came back a demon and she no choice, but to kill him. It was worse than the first time around and Cassie knew it. If she could keep Melissa from such pain again, she would do anything. That was one reason Cassie searched through what she could find in hopes of maybe finding a spell to quell the ghosts, bottle up the hole to the other side, but so far, she had been unsuccessful in her search.
With Nick just disappearing, she knew he wouldn't have come here if not for the presence of one of them and sure enough, Melissa was seated at the table, face buried in her hand, and her shoulders shook with obvious sobs and cries. Cassie frowned, anger flooded through her, and for a moment, the water began to boil just a bit more fierce in the pot before she took a shaky breath. Hadn't they all been through enough? Couldn't they just be left alone? Stepping forward, she closed the distance between herself and the other girl and knelt beside the chair, placing a light hand on her friend's arm. "Hey, Melissa. What happened? Did he hurt you?" she asked gently. "It'll be okay, alright? Shh. I promise."
