"I'm sorry," he said. He wasn't sure what else to say. Eddie hadn't made any of the decisions regarding Jill's life or future but he understood that her life had changed overnight and suddenly all of the decisions were being made for her. Running off to Palm Springs was a nice alternative to being dead but Eddie knew that Jill had struggled there.
She was right. Palm Springs was a walk in the park, even for a vampire like Jill, when the alternative was another dimension in some other world where the timelines were all crazy and dead people came back to life and tried to eat you. The zombie threat was an easy one for Eddie. All it took was a sharp stake to the forehead and they were done. But in big numbers they could easily overwhelm an easy target like Jill.
There was nothing he could do about her circumstances except the one thing he knew best. He could protect her.
"Not much. If it's too much, let me know and I'll carry you on my back."
Eddie would have no problem carrying Jill through the woods but he wasn't leaving her behind. There was no way. The last time he left her behind she got kidnapped and this forest was probably more dangerous than her dorm room in Amberwood and she had been stolen right from under her own covers with Angeline snoozing nearby. Eddie wasn't sure if he would ever trust anyone else with her safety again. Rose being the notable exception, of course.
"The people at the prison are pretty nice and welcoming." Of course, it depended on who you asked. And sometimes people were nicer to Eddie than they might be to other people. Girls and their spats were something that Eddie didn't really care to understand but he knew enough to stay out of them.
