Eddie was only a little surprised when Jill didn't return his affections. It wasn't unlike them and he realized right then that he had no idea from where in the timeline Jill was. Maybe she was from some point back at St. Vladimir's and didn't even realize they were that close yet. Maybe he was trying to make out with a fifteen year old who didn't appreciate it. Great. More things for him to obsess about.
But one thing always remained true when it came to Jill. It didn't matter how either one of them felt about each other. Eddie would never be good enough for her. She wasn't the one for him because she was a princess. She was beautiful and kind and protecting her was his number one mission in life. He was always stupid for getting things confused with her. This time it was even worse because he was the one with the girlfriend.
He snapped instantly back into guardian mode as if the kiss had never happened. Protecting Jill still remained his most important objective, more important than anything else on Earth. That was a good thing to focus on.
"Come on," he said softly. "We need to get you back to the prison."
He would have brought a car if he had any clue where he was going when he left the prison. He had left like a mad man, frantic and in a desperate rush. Running seemed the only plausibility when it came to protecting Jill. And he had been overcome with the guilt of her abduction which she probably didn't even remember. Or maybe she remembered it and blamed him for it too and that was why she pulled away. Or maybe they brainwashed her like The Alchemists did with Sydney. Anything was possible.
Focus, Castile, focus.
"Sydney can explain everything to you back at the prison," he said as they walked along the stream. Eddie could protect them now but it didn't hurt to stay near a water source when you were accompany Jill Dragomir somewhere.
