She hated this. Jill didn’t think that she could be so annoyed with something so much and she had gone to school for Christ's sake. She had to wear those stupid uniforms. Go to those dumb classes. She had gotten used to it all but everything had changed so fast and she was so stressed about everything. She had to rely on other people. On Sydney and Eddie. She had to rely on this plan that was supposed to protect her from the people wanting her dead because if she died then Lissa couldn’t be queen. How was that any way to live?
And now she was here, her mind racing because she was worried about Adrian and because she was apparently fighting zombies. Jill reached for water so that she could pull it up and change it, creating a spear of ice that cut through a zombie who had nearly crossed the river. Their groaning and her own breathing filled her ears so no, she didn’t even realize that there were more coming up from right behind her.
He came out of nowhere from what Jill could see. A flash of yellow and silver as she watched Eddie make quick work of the zombies who had wanted to eat her. Jill simply watched, her entire body shivering at the sight of her guardian and the fierce determination that he had. The sound of his silver stake striking against fragile bone and the splash of blood against the ground. Jill could easily recall the last time she had seen Eddie fight so vigorously.
And then they were dead and the zombies were still trying to cross the river and Jill moved, wanting to be near Eddie because then everything would be okay and she would be safe because if anything Eddie had vowed to protect her and she craved that protection.
She embraced him but Eddie went forward quicker than she expected him to and their lips met in a kiss that was surprising and unexpected. It lasted longer than any accidental kiss should have last and when her mind caught up to what was happening she pulled back, her eyes widening because kissing Eddie had never been the plan.
