It had been nearly three months since their failed attempt to head back to the 1920's. Three months since the carnival folk found themselves in the past, but not nearly far back enough to qualify as being home. Some might have considered the botched trip a failure; but Professor James Henry Blackstone earnestly viewed it as having been a triumphant success. Sure sure, the year was off by around three decades or so. Yet the attempt...their collective effort to combine magic power from three vastly different sources...now that had been a true milestone and breakthrough as far as he was concerned. After all, it should have been impossible altogether. But here they were. Safe and sound, having once more harnessed the very power of time and space to navigate their way to another point within the timeline. Which was a feat that only the gods of myth had ever pulled off in works of literature and fiction. Of course being stuck in the 50's was a far cry from the wondrous world of technology and information they had already visited. And Blackstone did miss all the knowledge that had been at his disposal in the future. Books, and computers. Gadgets and advanced tools. Being in the 21st century had been the stuff of dreams, and the Professor had been loathe to leave that marvelous world behind.
Truth be told, James had given earnest thought to staying behind in the future. Had contemplated wishing the carnival well, and disappearing into that age of enlightenment. However, he had been needed in Zion. Had been needed to help ensure the others got home. And the thought of abandoning his apprentice or his vampire companion hadn't set well with Blackstone either. So when the carnival made their grand voyage back in time, James was along for the ride. These last few months though had been a bit of a blur. While the man mourned the loss of the future he had come to enjoy, he also threw himself right back into his never ending research. Aided this time by all manner of shiny bits and baubles the Professor had collected from the future. Information galore, stored away on flash drives for his tablet. Bits of technology that wouldn't be around for nearly a century. Scientific tools that even the most clever of men in the 20's or the 50's wouldn't dream up for decades. But for all the priceless trinkets and tools, it was the books he had 'borrowed' from the library that really piqued the man's interest. For nearly three straight months James had poured over every tome and textbook. Drinking in every word as if it quenched the thirst of a man dying of dehydration.
Oh he pulled himself away from his research and the piles of books that filled his wagon when it was time to put on his show. James also made time to spend with his companion Eva when she came around. And even spent the time to dine with his eager apprentice; sharing a meal while they discussed the latest book or bit of spellwork he had assigned Riley to review. Beyond such moments though Blackstone retreated into his wagon to once more delve deep into the knowledge he had brought back into the past. Oddly enough it wasn't magic that he studied exactly; since even in 2020 the collective works of magic spells were sparse at best. No it was to science that the Professor turned. Catching up on the advancements of the century. Devouring the information with glee, as all the new practices and 'fundamental' principles just sparked his imagination. For most sorcerers it was the old ways that were best to channel and perfect one's skill with weaving magic. Yet James Henry Blackstone had followed a different path for years. Favoring applying science to his spell-craft, and using carefully calculated theorems to help navigate the arcane powers. So instead of adorning himself in animal parts, herbs, and a blood...Blackstone turned to math and science to help him wield and shape reality to his whims.
Here and now; as he sat in his favorite chair, with his ornate carved wood pipe hanging from his lips, the sorcerer's gaze intently moved across the pages of the book in hand. Not a spell book or ancient tome. But a fascinating book that he found himself utterly enthralled with. The book titled 'Energy Storage: Fundamentals, Materials and Applications'. The Professor consumed the words with such delight, jotting down a few thoughts and notes onto a small pad of paper that sat in his lap as he read on. That BIC ballpoint pen danced across the yellow lined paper of his notepad as Blackstone nodded to himself, and it was only when he heard someone speak that James' gaze finally drifted up from his work. Having completely failed to notice that someone had arrived and was standing just outside his wagon on the other side of the open door. "Oh. Apologies...did you need something of me?"
