WHO: Martin and OTA
WHAT: Martin gets a snack
WHERE: Dining Room, First Floor

Martin sat alone at a table in the dining room. He had managed to get an ice cream from a vending machine after hours. He had a Choco Taco that he was unwrapping while his iTouch played a Kanye West song on its external speaker.

Someone walked in the room and he looked up. He paused the iPod. "Hey," he nodded.

Who: Ben and Jack
When: December 11th (carried on from this post.)
Where: The Library
Rating: PG
Summary: Math emergency
Warnings: None

The library smelled mainly of old books and moth balls, with its fair share of wobbly chairs and scribbled-on study tables, but it still remained a good place to check out obscure volumes and to do some quiet reading away from the chaos of the rec room. When Ben arrived, Jack wasn't there yet, so he selected a far-off table at the other end of the library and began to lay out his homework and writing materials. Over the years, Ben realised that his best math practises had been completed in A5 exercise books, a useful insight that proved fatal on his stationery allowance. He got through them so quickly (through a combination of large handwriting and constant cancelling out of solutions) that he now permanently did his exercises in pencil so that he could erase them off.

After so long, it still mystified Ben how Jack could be so good at math; he just seemed to understand it instinctively, like it was some sort of rhythmic language or scale progression he could just internalise. If math was at all like music, as Jack liked to tell him, then Ben was utterly tone deaf. It wasn't all bad, though. They could both have been terrible at math, and then there wouldn't be any hope at all.

Who: Ben and Luca
When: December 18th
Where: The Rec Room
Rating: PG
Summary: Hanging out
Warnings: None

The Rec Room was noisy pretty much all the time, but Ben found that he quite welcomed it at that point. In the past couple of months he'd established a small workspace for himself in one corner, accompanied by a large beanbag and another cushion (for visitors, mostly), as well as his laptop and a number of readings he had to complete over the weekend. His math homework lay discarded underneath the cushion, crumpled and somewhat forlorn.

Today hadn't exactly been great; they had been given a pop quiz first thing in the morning, and Ben had later succeeded in spectacularly charring the bottom of a test tube over his bunsen burner during Science period. The rest of the day would have been all right - they had a rather slack drama class: a series of hysterical improv games - if not for his mother calling him the moment French ended to ask him for his shoe size, which had only served to remind Ben that unlike some of his other schoolmates, who would be spending their holidays doing what they liked, the lead-up to Christmas for the McCormick family would be involved in the usual pre-recital frenzy. It wasn't even a major recital, anyway; you would think that after Carnegie, they wouldn't make such a big fuss over some random showcase at Marylhurst. Ben didn't want to sound envious, but his parents had never found the time to attend any of his shows save on. There was no arguing with Joan McCormick, though, so he had dutifully told her his shoe size and requested that she pick out a tie that didn't blind innocent bystanders.
