Good News Regarding Nitta-sensei!

News thanks to [info]queen_golgo_13 posting on LJ:

Diesel has posted an OK to Nitta-sensei's use of their picture - the one with the Iwaki and Katou on the ledge. They even joke that their models are hotter than Iwaki and Katou! Link here. (And w00t? Hotter than our boys? How are they able to design anything in that company? They have to be blind!)

From 55DSL's blog: "New rumors about 55DSL are stirring on the web these days, since the incredibly attentive manga readers concerned about artist Youka Nitta’s recent illustration that resembles one of the brand’s advertising photographs.

Specifically, the opening page in Stand on Vessel (Haru wo Daiteita series #49) manga in the August issue of Be-Boy Gold Magazine bears a great resemblance to the famous “kiss on the the ledge” from the Fall-Winter 06 campaign, and Nitta directly acknowledged that she traced it and that she is somewhat naïve in her awareness of copyrights.

Nitta also promised to deal with these issues more carefully in the future, and apologized profusely to 55DSL, the people involved, and her readers. 55DSL says: Nitta, don’t worry, we’re not that kind of brand, we consider this a tribute, only the greatest are copied, right? But honestly, our chick is hotter than yours!"

This is certainly a relief, and might be an indication that this might not end as badly as we thought.

Other news: The person - and yes, this seems to be a personal vendetta - who began this witch hunt is now on LJ and has made their own account. As if this wasn't spread widely enough as it is. This is beginning to look like a case of "let's look at the bitch's pics and find ads that look like them". Journal's here: http://community.livejournal.com/nitta_crib/

Pathetic much?

This is good news! This kind of thing is good advertising and not a big things in the end for Diesel so I'm not that surprised of the outcome :)

I guess that's the result of so many people coming to the other sites from LJ.

If only the other companies are going to be as kind...

Then again, ending up in court is probably not positive advertising. I think Nitta-sensei's apology, and the fact that she didn't try to lie about it, might work. *crosses fingers*

Let's hope so. *crosses fingers as well*

I saw the first, and the second is just ridiculous. Apparently once wasn't enough. Some people create, and some destroy. It looks like that one's decided destruction's the best way to go.

Witch hunt. FW in a larger model... That's what there is to it, imho.

Wow, that was a relief to hear, and I'm glad that 55DSL was so cool about it! I do hope that she'll be able to go back to writing manga--I was really alarmed when I read that she'd given it up completely.

The copying doesn't sound malicious--it seems more like inspiration than plagiarism, though it was an error in judgment on her part. I'm no expert, but maybe the Japanese publishers are particularly sensitive to this sort of thing because of a couple of manga-ka in the past who were actually found to have plagiarized other manga (not just copying fashion poses)? (I don't remember their names, but I recall reading about it in the Anime Nation news posts.) Nitta-sensei's offense certainly doesn't seem on the same level from my US perespective, but maybe the Japanese publishers are taking a strict stance due to past bad publicity and potential lawsuits.

It was indeed a relief. I think it might be more a question of losing face than about actual law. However, Nitta-sensei has never hidden that she used fashion mags as inspiration and that she copied designs. How that can come as a surprise is beyond me.

I hope fans will encourage her to return, maybe not right away, but when this has blown over. I think she might need all the cheering on she can get these days, poor woman.
