There were things you could count on it chemistry class. These included the fact that Dr. Madrox would explain and demonstrate very awesome things, but never let them actually perform those experiments for themselves because he was afraid of accidentally turning one of them radioactive or something. She wasn't sure. Another thing you could count on was the constant note passing that went on while Jamie continued to teach and was a good enough sport that he pretended not to see. As long as it was the proper him or one of the right dupes, he was a teddy bear, and they all knew it. Knew it and respected it. Wouldn't due to take him for granted and then get stuck with one of the weird dupes who got all militant about things. The notes were just their thing. They had to stay away from cell messages in the class because if the technopath got excited then she ended up shorting them all out. No one wanted to reprogram another new phone. So it was old skool pen and paper for them.

Yana mostly just teleported things where they were supposed to go. She liked chemistry. It was interesting. She liked the formulas and the experiments. And maybe liked the idea of being able to figure out how to make a bomb or acids a little more the she should, but hey they were gonna be heroes so they might need that stuff too. So people had stopped trying to send her messages for the most part since they knew she was going to ignore them anyway. Except the one today that landed on her desk had her name scrawled across it in very large letters.

After making sure that Jamie wasn't doing anything more interesting than balancing a chemical formula, which she could do in her sleep, Yana carefully unfolded the piece of paper. The handwriting was terrible, but it didn't matter because she could still read it. She could read it, and it made her heart rush a little. Heard Kitty Pryde was back. Someone reported seeing her in the hallway talking to Xavier. True? Y/N?

Chemistry be damned. Finding out if Kitty was back was more important than anything Jamie could teach her today.

Without even saying a word, Yana tessered out of her seat in a bright flash of light. A moment later there was a second bright flash of light as the note that had been passed to her was deposited on Dr. Madrox's desk. There was her get out of jail free card.

The next flash of light was in Kitty's room, where Yana had spent quite a large amount of time growing up, and was the first place she had thought to check. "Kitty?" she called out, voice higher than normal and louder due to her excitement. There had of course been letters and emails over the years, but it wasn't the same as having her best friend right there and present.

Kate definitely wasn't selling it well. The experience overall had been amazing, but it had definitely been work, and now that she was back, she sort of didn't want to give Yana reason to want to run off immediately and do what she'd done.

"Keep practicing," Kate suggested, obviously amused by the fact that Yana had taken up lock picking as a hobby. "Before you know it, you'll be an expert and your room will be filled with priceless works of art and gold bars."

"I don't know," she admitted, standing up to open a drawer. "New students, new teachers... and I never told the Professor or Mr. Lehnsherr when I'd be back." She peered into the drawer, noting that even her clothes were exactly where she'd left them. Reaching in, she started to remove the stacks of shirts so she could put the newer clothes in. "Want any of these?"

"Gold does make the world go round, after all." At least according to the jerk in that post-apocalyptic musical she liked to watch even though some of the acting was truly awful. "And who can say no to a nice Monet or Renoir or Turner?" Yet that hadn't been quite the reaction she was expecting.

She grinned at the other woman. "So you don't think it's silly for the teleporter to learn to pick locks? Or are you just covering until you can go scold Remy for teaching me?"

As Kitty moved around the room, already changing it in little ways, Yana frowned. "They knew you'd be back. We all did. No one ever doubted you'd come back." When she opened the drawer to replace the clothes, Yana stood up. "What are you doing?"

Kate pointed and nodded as Yana admitted that classic works of art were just irresistible. She couldn't say she was completely happy that Yana had taken up lock picking, but it was what it was... and she was fully planning on cornering Remy to verify the details of the training.

"I would never cover," Kate gasped, holding a hand to her chest and then smiling faintly. "I'm being calm and non-judgmental... and I'm interrogating the shit out of him when I see him."

She turned her attention to the room and how it really hadn't changed at all. Though she didn't have any huge plans for remodeling, it was probably a good idea to at least get her more current belongings put away. Kate started to empty one of her drawers, turning when Yana stood up to ask what she was doing.

"Making room," she replied, setting the stack of shirts on her desk. "I don't know how much of these I even want." Turning back to the drawer, she reached for the top of the second stack and froze. The top shirt in that stack was one she'd stolen from Piotr. It had never come close to fitting, but she'd taken it nonetheless... and while she wasn't sure that she could bring herself to part with it, she didn't want to have to look at it just then either. Frowning, she looked over at Yana. "Are you hungry?"

Yeah, the comment about Kitty going to interrogate Remy just made Yana shake her head and laugh. "Okay, you might be able to kick his ass these days just so long as you don't let him say anything." Honestly she had been surprised to find out that he had real skills to teach her. She had halfway expected to learn that his secret was sweet talking the locks until their tumblers magically popped open for him.

The answer was just so matter of fact that it made Yana frown even more as she stepped up to the desk to touch the shirts. "You can't just toss them." Illyana considered taking them all. They'd fit. When she was younger, she had always figured she'd end up tall like Piotr, but she hadn't. She wasn't even as tall as Kitty.

The change in topic didn't make sense until she looked over at the other woman and caught sight of the shirt herself. "I remember that one."

"I won't throw them away," she shook her head. "I just don't know if I want to keep them. At least not all of them." Or most, but Yana seemed to be pretty unhappy with the idea of getting rid of any of them, and the last thing Kate wanted was to make Yana upset or uncomfortable. But then it suddenly got uncomfortable anyway, and Kate became acutely aware of the fact that she hadn't eaten much that day. Maybe walking away from the laundry task just then was a good plan.

Or not, because Yana had noticed it too. Probably from the not being at all subtle. That may have been part of it. Kate nodded, scooping the shirt up as Yana mentioned that she remembered it. "I stole it to sleep in."

She unfolded it and turned it over, lifting the left sleeve and completely ignoring the tears starting to well in her eyes again as she explained, "He tore the seam armoring up, so I took it since he couldn't wear it in public anymore anyway."

Yeah, he probably would have still worn it. In fact, he'd looked for it. It was a good shirt. Even though Kate had tried to keep it hidden, it hadn't taken him all that long to spot it buried at the bottom of her laundry basket. They'd eventually agreed that she could have temporary custody of it. Or permanent, as it turned out. Kate folded the shirt carefully and moved to place it back in the drawer. That one, she was definitely going to keep.

Yana was about three seconds away from telling Kitty how much time she had spent making sure that nothing about her best friend's room got changed while she was away, but she was managing to keep it bottled up. Did it matter if it changed now? It wasn't like she needed it as much anymore. Especially since Kitty was here now. Her perfectly maintained room didn't need to be.

Before she got to that point, though, the emergence of Piotr's shirt distracted her attention. The mention of Kitty stealing it to sleep in made Yana laugh a bit, quietly. "Yeah. That makes sense."

They both knew that her brother didn't care about ripped clothes. Even after they had moved to America, Piotr had kept that sense of frugality, the need to keep everything as long as it still had purpose. As Kitty explained the story, she watched her friend's face, saw the start of more tears. And stayed quiet. After Kitty put it back in the drawer, Yana enveloped her in another hug.

"I yelled at anyone who tried to touch your room. Eventually they stopped trying to change it," she admitted, face pressed against Kitty's shoulder, muffling the words. Maybe to the point where she wouldn't even be able to hear, but it felt better to let them go.

Kate really hadn't wanted to start crying again, but there it was. She knew that coming back would bring back memories, and though she'd prepared as much as she could, she hadn't really spoken about a lot of it since it happened. Tears were not exactly unexpected. She smiled genuinely when Yana wrapped her arms around her again, and she held the younger woman close, doing her absolute best to keep herself from outright sobbing.

Kate laughed just a little bit when Yana admitted that the reason the room was untouched was because she'd guarded it. She should have suspected as much... and it definitely explained why Yana had seemed concerned when she suggested getting rid of some of the clothes. She gave Yana a squeeze before finally pulling back with a sniffle. "Thank you." Wiping her face with the back of her hand, she added, "I really, really appreciate it."

"Sorry," Kate cleared her throat, exhaling what was almost a laugh as she promised, "I swear I'm not going to just always burst into tears now. It's just... I kind of bottled a lot up, I guess." She nodded toward the shirts. "I'll go through those some other time."

Yana shrugged. "I needed it to stay the same too," was all she said in reply. As much as she might have liked to claim that it was all purely altruistic, it was far from the truth. She had fought for it for herself as much if not more than for Kitty's eventually return. "But," she let out a breath, "you can change it. Now. Or move. If you want to. I mean, you came back. What's a room full of old stuff now anyway."

That made her grin and then launch into some teasing. "Good. Because if you're just going to get all weepy, I'll head back to class."

She understood what Kitty meant even though she had pretty much already dealt with it all. Not completely, of course. There were always going to be days when the absence of her brother was like a gaping void in her heart, but those got fewer and further between as time passed. Kitty, however, had been so overwhelmed that she had fled rather than stay. And Yana understood that inclination too. "I mean, you can cry. If you need to. Or punch something. Or just eat all the ice cream we can find in the freezers. I know where they hide it all. Even Betsy's secret stash of triple chocolate and almond gelato."

Kate did laugh when Yana threatened to go back to class if she kept on bursting into tears every five minutes. She was pretty sure that the worst of it was over, now that she'd seen Yana and was sure that her friend didn't hate her for bailing in the first place. She laughed again when Yana offered Betsy's secret ice cream stash.

"I just got back," she smiled. "I think I should wait at least a week before I piss Betsy off." At least a week, but hopefully more like forever.

"And this is my room," Kate nodded, going back to Yana's earlier comment about changing things. There was no world in which she was going to move to a different room completely. Not a chance. "If someone else was in here, I'd probably walk in on them naked all the time."

She had a habit of not really paying attention when she walked, and since she always kept her door locked anyway, she wouldn't even notice if the new occupant had it bolted. "I might rearrange some stuff, but you know I'm going to force you to help me with it anyway... whenever it happens."

The comment about waiting at least a week to piss Betsy off made Yana laugh and then roll her eyes a bit. "You went all that way and spent all that time to learn how to be a ninja, but you're still worried about the bigger badder ninja in the house finding out if you swipe her ice cream." Not that she didn't get it because Betsy could be scary with her quiet Britishness and all her big guns, but it was still an excellent chance to tease Kitty that she couldn't pass up.

"Okay. Good." She had to keep herself from sounding too pleased about that. Just the right amount of stoic. Things were just sort of settling back into place; there was no way she wanted Kitty to up and relocate rooms on her now. "True. That could be a fiasco. Especially for whatever poor person they put in here. Not to even mention the fact that I tesser in here constantly so it might not just be you invading their privacy all the time." Sometimes Yana's panic reaction involved going back to Kitty's room rather than her own.

"Well," she drug the word out as she looked around. "Okay. The posters could probably use updating."

"Shes been a ninja for a lot longer than I have," Kate grinned. Maybe she'd pick a fight with Betsy to see where the woman was skills-wise now that she had more working in her favor... but she definitely didn't want their first sparring match to be over ice cream.

"Exactly," she agreed, nodding at Yana's point that she tended to pop in unexpectedly as well. "You and I have already had the awkward naked room-entering moment. If anyone else was here, it would be like starting all over." She hadn't missed the fact that Yana had used the present tense when bringing up the point that she came into Kate's room a lot, but she chose not to bring it up. They would have all kinds of time to talk later.

"You think?" She tilted her head as she considered the decorations. They definitely screamed teenager in a way that she didn't really want them to anymore. "I sort of want to re-paint. But that has more to do with just wanting to paint something than it does with wanting to get rid of the paint that's here."

"Eh. You're all ancient. It's hard to keep track," she said with a roll of her eyes and a grin.

"True," she said, mimicking Kitty's nod from a few moments ago. "Although that could be a good way to meet new people. We have managed to drag in a few since your," she trailed off, trying to figure out what word was best considering the situation while also not wanting to hurt her friend's feelings, "departure. Some are more fun than others."

The mention of paint made her bite her lip. It shouldn't. It was just a word. "Yeah. Could do. Boring though. All that rolling and taping and moving things. Not that moving things is a problem for either of us."

"Hey!" Kate grabbed one of the shirts they'd been discussing and tossed it at Yana's face, laughing as she insisted, "I'm only five years older than you!"

Kate took Yana's pause as an opportunity to gently close her drawer, trying her very best not to let herself feel overwhelmingly guilty again. She raised an eyebrow. "Maybe you should warn them."

Being in the room didn't seem like it was doing either of them much good, judging from Yana's reaction. It was a subtle tell, but one that Kate was familiar with. Painting sounded like it was making her uncomfortable, and while Kate didn't really like the idea of waking up in a room that hadn't been changed since before, she liked the idea of causing Yana any more pain even less. It was time to change the subject.

"Is Jamie's class your last one today?" She stooped to grab her shoes, slipping them on with a teensy hop and then standing up straight again. "If it isn't, I say you ditch whatever else you have and we go putz around town."
