My brothers and sisters in mutancy...
Who: Magneto, addressing the Haven at large, open to reactions
What: Erik has a thing or two to say about recent events
When: Friday evening
Where: Haven Entry, broadcast over the intercom
Erik had seen all he could stand, and his patience had been worn to the breaking point. The news confirmed the reality of the world they were living in, how could Charles not see it? How could his old friend be so blind? How could he still believe that the world would change itself when it was clearly in need of being changed? Magneto would not be a victim, he would wait no longer, he would have faith in the "good will" of humans no longer. Such faith and patience was pointless and severely misguided to his mind. His mind had been made up by no one less than the President of the United States himself. Now was a time for action, and if there was one thing Erik had trained his Acolytes for, it was just that.
The announcement went up, both via email and the Haven speaker system. Half an hour later, on the dot, Erik was dressed in his suit, a heavy cloak over his shoulder, the helmet he had so carefully fashioned over the past few weeks tucked under one arm. He was done with Xavier, done with this Haven, done with childlike, fairytale dreams, and he was sure he was not alone. That was the reason he had called to, reached out to, all of those at the Haven.
"My friends," he began, his voice firm with small strands of emotion coming loose around the very edges. His eyes showed weariness around the edges, but they were resolved and determined. Passion poured from every cell in his body as he stood firmly before those he had for so long called children, those he would soon be leaving behind. "My children. My brothers and sisters in the mutant gene. I stand before you today to apologize. We have wronged you." He paused, closing his eyes and taking in a slow breath before speaking again. "I have wronged you."
His eyes opened again, sweeping the gaze of all those present. "You came here, to us, asking questions, and we, in our foolishness, gave you answers. You asked us, 'what are we?' You asked us, 'what should we be?' We gave you answers, we told you what to do, we laid a course before you. I am now sorry--heartbroken--to say... I believe we were wrong. Those who swore allegiance to the Mutant Liberation Front were given no such words, they were not deterred from their passions. Did they go too far? Perhaps. But they achieved something, they changed the world. I ask you... what have we, what has Xavier, myself and this Haven accomplished? The answer, my friends, is nothing.
"You asked us, 'What are we?' and we should have answered, 'What do you want to be?' You asked us 'What should we do?' and we should have answered, 'What do you want to do?' The Mutant Registration Act is no more, yet the government clings to the remnants of this program. Why? Because, I believe, they intend to activate it again. They intend to attack us again, to threaten us again, and I, for one, will not tolerate it.
"Tonight, I leave the Haven, but like the Registration Act, it will not be forever. I leave to find a new home, a new start for those of you with the dedication and the courage to right the wrongs of this world. Together we will found a new safe place for our mutant brothers and sisters, together we will destroy the Mutant Registration files which the government is clinging to, together we will prevent any future abominations such as the Legacy Virus, and together we will change the world."
His words stopped, he having to close his eyes once more to collect himself and calm the righteous indignation filling his chest. When he spoke again, his voice was quiet, much more subdued and sympathetic. "I understand that many of you have come to see this as home. I understand that this is difficult and even painful. I do not ask you to swear allegiance now, I do not ask you to throw your faith to me this moment, but I ask you to consider. Consider the world around you, consider the events of this week, and consider the good you could do, we all could do, if we put our powers to use, rather than cowering in this guided cage we have dared called a safe haven. I trust that, in your hearts, you will each find your calling, will find the answer which is correct for you."
Magneto dropped his head a moment, a half bow before he shifted his weight towards the door he was standing before. "I thank you, all of you, for the faith you have given me during my time overseeing the Haven. I again apologize for my sins, for my shortcomings. As I said before, I will be back, for all of you who share my passion, who share my fury, who share my vision. Until then." A small smile curved his lips. "Until next week." One more incline of his head and he turned away, cloak fluttering as he opened the door and strode to the black car waiting beyond, shoulders squared and chin held high. He would be back, he would take whatever determined souls who were willing to follow him into the fire, and he would show Charles the future he could have helped build, if only his friend had the courage.
