Akuchi shifted, nosing his way out from under the pillow in confusion. It was daylight. It was daylight and he was warm and comfortable for the first time in recent memory. And while the first thought was occasionally disrupted by foul weather, the second thought was unique. He'd never thought it before, and certainly had never found himself nestling back a bit, pressing closer to the source of that warmth without letting himself pause to really examine it. For a few moments, at least, he didn't want to know.
Turning a little, Jordan hugged Akuchi closer to him, a soft smile on his lips as he slept. He himself had slept better than he had in a decade. Feeling the pillow moving away from Akuchi's head, he tucked the boy's head under his chin, content.
Akuchi shivered, twisting to peer up at Jordan thoughtfully. "Strange," he whispered softly.
"Mmmmn." At the sound of Akuchi's voice, Jordan started to stir, his smile growing as he opened his eyes to look at Akuchi. "G'morning..."
Akuchi stared back at him solemnly for a long moment before a blush spread over his cheeks and he tugged away abruptly.
Jordan blinked as Akuchi pulled away. "I'm sorry -- did I upset you?" He loosened his arm around Akuchi's waist, but didn't quite let go.
"Thought you said you had your own bed," Akuchi muttered, scrubbing at his face with one hand.
"I do," Jordan murmured. He leaned in after a moment, however, and brushed some of Akuchi's bangs back, blinking at the thin scar he found there at one temple. "...Akuchi?"
Akuchi froze, eyes wide as he stared at Jordan, and his body shaking ever so slightly at the touch. "...Don't," he whispered.
Jordan stroked the hair out of Akuchi's face gently, his gaze concerned. "What happened...?"
Akuchi's eyes slid closed, squeezing tightly as he held still in Jordan's touch. "...Let go," he begged softly.
After a moment, Jordan pulled his hand back, though he was still clearly deeply worried. "Talk to me?"
Akuchi slowly relaxed as Jordan pulled one hand away from his face, and he shifted a bit further away. "Does it matter?" he whispered softly.
"I'm worried about you," Jordan murmured. "Believe or not, I do care about you."
Shifting so that his back was to Jordan, Akuchi slowly opened his eyes. "I told you... I'm an expert on blood magic."
Jordan paused, then spooned up behind Akuchi, just barely touching the younger man. "Who did it to you?"
Akuchi hesitated, staring blankly at the wall for a long minute before leaning slowly back into Jordan's chest. "...My father," he whispered.
Tensing, Jordan wound an arm around Akuchi and hugged the boy to him. "I'm sorry," he murmured.
Akuchi's eyes closed slowly, and he tucked his chin to his chest, ashamed. "Head wounds bleed well," he explained softly.
"No wonder you don't like people touching your face," Jordan whispered. "I don't blame you. Akuchi... don't be ashamed. You don't have anything to be ashamed of."
"You're not a mage," Akuchi said softly, repeating earlier words. "You wouldn't understand."
Jordan hugged Akuchi closer. "You'd be surprised about what I'd understand... Just because I'm not a mage, it doesn't mean I can't relate or understand."
"I don't want to talk about this," Akuchi murmured, tugging free enough to shove his head back under the pillow, closing his eyes again.
Gently, Jordan tried to pull the pillow away. "Would you like breakfast?"
"Going back to sleep until this all goes away," Akuchi muttered, one hand shooting out from under the bedding to hold the pillow down tightly.
"It won't go away, no longer how long you sleep," Jordan murmured.
"You will, though," Akuchi informed him, sounding just a little petulent.
Jordan laughed softly and stroked a hand over Akuchi's arm. "Sorry, I'm not going away."
"You're a teacher. You have to go teach someday," Akuchi argued, though he was peeking slowly out of the pillow.
"Want to come with me?" Jordan offered with a gentle smile. "It smells like formaldehyde, but it's fun."
"Formaldehyde?" Akuchi wrinkled his nose, peering at Jordan.
Jordan snickered, amused. "I'm a biology teacher, remember? I have a jar of eyeballs in formaldehyde sitting on my desk. It freaks the students out."
"You are a sick man," Akuchi pronounced, nestling back into the bed. "I'm sleeping."
Grinning, Jordan tucked himself against Akuchi. "I think I'll sleep a bit longer too."
Akuchi snorted, but snuggled closer, his eyes sliding shut. As long as Jordan didn't touch his face... he was finding that he rather liked being held by the psychic.
Incredibly pleased to find Akuchi relaxing, Jordan smiled to himself and pressed close, sighing softly in contentment. It wasn't long before he'd drifted off again.
