[21st Aug. 2010 • 01:39] |
I decided to type up my own versions of the Premier League and Bundesliga fixtures with my own time zone and week-by-week formatting so that I might make it easier for me to discipline myself into actually keeping up. Because I am nice, I thought I would share in case anyone else finds it more useful than the various web schedules. To be updated continuously when dates/times are finalized and/or I become less lazy.

I'm at work for every single one, but is anyone watching any of the international friendlies today? The only one I know for sure I am going to do my best to catch is Germany vs. Denmark (1:30 PM CDT), but if you feel like watching anything before that we can pick matches at random til it starts~ JUST LET ME KNOW AND I'LL GET ON MEEBO.
Handy schedule at ontd_fb if you need it.
ETA: I've settled on the Germany/Iceland U21 for the time being.
ETA #2: U21 is over.
ETA #3: Now the real team is playing. NO ONE FROM OUR WC GROUP IS AROUND? |

Celtic vs. Man Utd update |
[16th Jul. 2010 • 16:51] |
Hello. While I probably have to go out tonight, I thought I'd remind everyone that Celtic FC is playing Manchester United tonight as part of a ~glamour~ game (BBC's words, not mine) on ESPN2 at 7pmEST. It might be on ESPN3 as well.
Everyone should support Celtic for 3 reasons: one) one of Liverpool's greatest players use to play for them (Dalglish), two) they have the same song as Liverpool (You'll Never Walk Alone), and three) GREEN HOOPS! Bonus point: they're Scottish.
I was going to end this with a Bill Shankley quote about how you can change your car, wife, etc but you can't change your football team. But I think this article more adequately and sanely suggests reasons for and against each EPL team (since I keep bothering people who do not ask for my advice :(). |

If you've been following the post-tournament news, you've probably already heard about the Great Gay German Conspiracy (tm) plus Captaingate, but if you don't follow ~loewsmiserables you probably missed this article that sums up the Germany NT in this WC in the context of some of its wider issues. I thought it was a good read. Check it! Do we have anyone on Team Lahm or Team Ballack? ETA: LOL anyone at all on Team Ballack? Bueller? Bueller? Mueller?
In South Africa, the German national team surprised the world by playing unusually attractive football. With their flair, selfless team spirit and different ethnic backgrounds, they were ambassadors of a new Germany.
Two weeks ago, shortly before midnight in Durban, where Germany would later lose to Spain, I encountered two white men and a black woman in a hotel elevator. The two men were wearing England jerseys, and the woman was scantily clad. It had been a long day of football, and the Englishmen had apparently started drinking beer early on. That day, I had watched the Netherlands wrestle down Slovakia at the magnificent stadium in Durban, and I later saw Brazil defeat Chile in the fan park on the beach. I was ready for bed. The trio in the elevator couldn't decide whether to get off or stay on. Finally, one of the men jumped out and pulled the woman with him, while the second man and I continued riding the elevator upward. He was teetering precariously and fell on his backpack between the third and fourth floors.
"Where are you from?" he asked from his position on the floor.
"Germany," I replied. "Sorry, I know it was a goal."
"Oh, to hell with the goal," the man said. "Your guys were better. Faster. We brought along a bunch of slow, lazy stars. Terry, Lampard. They're not that enthusiastic anymore. Your guys were really good. I don't know how you did it. But it was really very good."
