Ken's expression remained unchanged; he didn't know what to say or how Hawke could speak so lightly about something so dire. But the man had lived with these truths every day of his life and if this was how he endured, the boy couldn't fault him for that. After all, he'd done far worse to get through each day not so long ago. He watched the older man pat Koromaru's head and the dog lick at his hand in return, then said finally, "It's not hard for people to lose sight of what's wrong or right when they're afraid. I guess."
Then his thin eyebrows shot up in surprise. "Accidentally?" he asked, simultaneously curious and incredulous. That didn't seem like something that could happen by accident. Still...he hoped it was true. It sounded like the place needed to change.
