Who: Bellatrix and Rodolphus Lestrange
What: A night in
Where: A Muggle family's home. Bellatrix is thrilled.
When: Monday evening
Rating: Undetermined

Muggle filth. Bellatrix had never felt so disgusted in her life, but they had few options for where to live. Soon she hoped to find a wizard home to stay in, and while it would be no Black manor, at least it would be better than this.

Needlepoint. Technology. Hideous clothing. The smell of Muggles permeated everything in the house, and the number of spells Bellatrix tried had failed to get rid of it. After months of this, she wasn't sure which she preferred: sleeping in the Muggles's bed or in the cold stone cell of Azkaban.

The lack of house elves to serve them also caused a problem. Bellatrix did not cook, and there were things in the kitchen she had never seen before. She had managed a roast, slightly burned, with side dishes that were mundane at best, but edible. Giving her husband a look, as if daring him to say a word against her efforts, she set his plate down in front of him and opened a bottle of wine they had discovered in the cellar. It wasn't the quality she was accustomed to, but with luck a few glasses would smooth the edges of her temper.

Sitting down at the other side of the table with her back straight and shoulders back, she cut her roast with as much dignity as she could fine. "When are we moving on? If we stay much longer, the stench will cling and be impossible to get rid of."

"I doubt the stench is any better at another location we'd choose," Rodolphus pointed out, and he would dare to criticize her rather rudimentary attempt at cooking, but yes a home with an Elf would be far preferrable. "Unless you'd rather skulk with Snape and the rat at Grimmauld Place, that is?" Which they'd been avoiding on principle - the were a married couple, with a certain need for privacy, after all - but Rodolphus did suspect that the food was better.

"We can do better," she said disdainfully. "Next home, we will. I insist. A wizarding dwelling ought not to be that difficult to secure."

She gave her husband a cold look at the mention of Snape. "No, I would not rather skulk around with that miserable excuse of a servant and his pet. I have much better things to do than spend my time with someone who doesn't respect my position amongst the Dark Lord's followers and his place beneath me." Better food or not, Bellatrix would have rather eaten her liver and kidneys than cohabited with Snape.

They'd talked of this before, of course, when they'd decided not to stay with the rest at Malfoy Manor, or at Grimmauld after the move. Too many cloying underlings around for his tastes, even if they were marked for their Lord.

Wizarding homes would never last as long as a muggle home for them, though. Too many chances to be recognized, too many wards to trip. Of course, now that their Lord was in power in the Ministry, what had they to fear of being found out? They'd kill any mobs who came to fight, and any Aurors would be ordered to let them free.

He pondered it for a moment as he took a few tentative bites, then nodded. "A wizarding home, next time, then. We'll have to pick the next pet very carefully."

Staying at Malfoy Manor under the eye of her sister took swallowing pride, and Bellatrix hadn't been able to choke it down. Grimmauld Place and the stench from the rat and the bat was worse, and therefore staying someplace else was the only option Bellatrix would stand for.

This, at least, managed a smile out of her, or what passed for a smile. "I'm certain we'll find something. Perhaps we may have to keep our pets alive for a time being. Pity that. I've never been good at remembering feedings."

So many years, so much blood and glory and insanity later, long years waiting in Azkaban - and he still did love her smile. He felt himself smiling in answer, it looked hawkish and unfamiliar on his features, and nodded.

"Perhaps I shall let you look, then. Something suitable. Some mudblood family we can keep dancing for a few weeks..."
