Who: Ron and Hermione
Where: In the woods, by the lake
When: Today
What: Study break!
Warnings: TBA

Ron took a seat on one of the dryer logs that sat by the side of the lake, and huddled into his coat to wait for Hermione. She really didn't relax enough, not that anyone could blame her. There wasn't much to turn to to unwind, here - the scenery wasn't exactly inspiring, all grey and bare forest and muddy, frosty water. Might as well stay inside and pour over impossible old books, when this was the alternative.

... But if she actually went cross-eyed, they'd have to rely on his and Harry's take on Runes, and might as well just turn themselves in now - so maybe staring at dead trees was the lesser of two evils. The company was definitely appreciated, anyway; he'd been wanting time with her since he'd found his way back, but there was always something that needed done, some intervening emergency. That wasn't going to stop any time soon. But while the peace and quiet lasted (not too much longer, apparently, judging by Harry's behavior), he could take it for what little it was worth.

Ron nodded. He had found what he was looking for in his brief recess from the tent, anyhow - the pressure of Hermione's head on his shoulder was drawing his mind further and further from anything unpleasant that might have been waiting for him in the near future. After a moment, he slipped his hand out of hers and wrapped his arm about her waist, keeping his eyes focused on the far side of the lake. This felt warmer - almost peaceful - like it could last a bit longer than the few minutes he knew they had before the cold or some pressing task (or Harry waking up, he thought) took them away from the shore. It wasn't much to look at, but it was better than books and tinned soup.

Hermione looked out over things too, and she wished she could say something to Ron that would be remotely normal - but asking him about things that would usually let him talk, Quidditch or his family or anything, would just remind them more and more about what they didn't know, what they didn't have here.

"Viktor said he'd get us a Wireless somehow," she said after a moment.

Ron was silent for a few seconds. "That'd be good," he conceded. There was absolutely no sense in arguing the point. "Has it been ... pretty easy, picking up the stuff he's sent along? Seems to be a lot of it." And something to bring in another voice or two would be a welcome addition (quite aside from the access to news). Tensions were clearly running lower, but one of his worst fears was that they'd just become sick of one another.

"I managed most of it pretty easily when he left the food packages, save for the last one." Where she'd been sure she was almost caught, and Hermione shivered a little remembering, and squeezed Ron's hand again. "But we'll be more careful this time."

"What do you -" The pressure on his hand reminded him to keep his mouth shut - insisting on finding fault with her methods or Krum's deliveries wouldn't lead him anywhere he wanted to go, especially when he had nothing to offer in the way of ideas. "There's no reason we all have to do it, you know," he pointed out, without much hope of convincing her. The last thing he wanted to think about was what would happen if something went wrong, just for ... a few tins of soup, or a Wireless.

"No, there's not." Hermione looked confused, looking up from his shoulder to his eyes. "I meant Viktor and I would be more careful this time. It's safer if only one of us goes to grab the things?"

"Oh. - Yeah, of course. Much better if it's just one of us." He tightened his grip on her hand slightly, and kept his gaze firmly on the far side of the lake. "Viktor and I will be more careful, this time." It was only fair he should take his turn, wasn't it? And it would be nice, he thought hopefully, to be able to do so without any argument.

"Ron, don't be silly. He'll tell me exactly where he's put things, it will go faster if I ... " she trailed off then, sighing. She didn't want to fight about anything right now. Especially not about Viktor, because those rows were a bit legendary, weren't they?

Ron waited for Hermione to justify herself - Merlin knew she was capable of going at it until he didn't have a rational leg to stand on - and unwound a little when she seemed to decide it wasn't worth it. "He can tell me just as easily, anyway," he said with half a shrug. He didn't want an argument, and he didn't want to jostle her head from his shoulder. "- It'll be nice to have. It's a good idea."

"He'll tell me, and I'll tell you." Hermione could just imagine the confusion if Ron tried to follow Viktor's directions. If Ron tried to follow anyone's direction, really. But instead of saying that, she put her head back onto his shoulder, sighing. "I'll write him again about it soon." Not now.

Ron smiled slightly. "Sure." An easy victory was rare enough that he knew not to press. And it wasn't like he was dying to see her run back to the tent to pen a letter to Krum. He brought his hand up to rest over her hat - not as nice as her hair, of course, but the weather was a little brutal. "You're taking a break, anyway," he ventured, as though it were indisputable. "Business and that sort of thing can wait a bit."

"Was that an order?" Hermione chuckled, but then sighed easily enough and closed her eyes for a moment on his shoulder. "You're right though, until Harry tells us whatever it was, it can wait...." She didn't quite know why they needed a wireless, anyway. Ginny had said something about a radio show, but she had no idea how that would help.

"Would I order you to do anything?" He was pretty sure he had spent the past several years close to begging her to do his homework. "Yeah, he's got the right idea. If you can't have a nap, a breather's a close second." Ron was sure having a few extra tidbits of news would be more than helpful, but was largely looking forward to the wireless because he thought it might be cheery to sit back and listen to some Quidditch if they happened to be lucky enough to catch a game. It might be nice to go the rest of the season without being confirmed in his suspicion that Chudley would continue to crash like a broom on fire, but ... well, this might be their year.

"Alright, what's your excuse then?" Hermione was teasing now, and she chuckled but then sat up a little from his shoulder so that she could look at him properly. "I did really miss you, you know," She said unexpectedly. They hadn't really talked about Ron's leaving, since he'd come back.

"Me? Did I make breakfast this morning, or didn't I?" He made to push her head playfully back down against his shoulder, but stopped when she looked at him. "I missed you, too," he said, feeling suddenly a little hot. "I mean - I think ... that's how I found you. This thing -" He dug into his coat pocket, fishing around for the Deluminator. "I was thinking about how much I wanted to see you, and ... here I was." He shoved it back in his pocket, and looked down to the ground. There was no need to explain further, really. It was embarrassing enough without going on about lights and all of that.

Hermione wasn't sure if that meant that he'd wanted to see her and Harry, or if he'd wanted to see her, and for the first time in months she took a minute to entertain that thought that she'd rather it was just her he was thinking about. That somehow he'd come back for her.

"Dumbledore must have known," She said after a moment, smiling a little even if there was a sad touch to it.How much of this would have been easier if he'd just told them what he knew.

"Yeah, great," Ron muttered - more relieved to see her smile than he let on. "I can just imagine - 'Weasley, he'll probably turn tail at some point, better give him the retrace-your-steps gadget.'" But don't tell him what it is, let him stew on it for a while. Damn the man. "I guess it's not much worse than a book that points you in a hundred different directions."

"All at once," Hermione said with a frown, but then she studied Ron a little more carefully, taking his hand with both of hers and holding it that way. "I don't think that's what he saw. I think he saw that there would be a time that we'd really need you..."

Ron's face started burning a little - but after a moment of looking out into the woods, he found the will to meet her eyes, somehow. He even managed half a smile (part of him, after all, felt like grinning ear to ear). "He was always a little cracked," he said, quietly. He squeezed her hand. Whatever he'd seen ... he was grateful for it. Now that he was back here with them - with her - he couldn't think of how he'd ever thought he wanted to be elsewhere.

Hermione licked her lips unconsciously - the way he was looking at her did strange things to her stomach. He looked happy, torn between happy an embarrassed, really, but happy, and the way he looked at her it was like she was part of the reason for that.

And it was wishful thinking, and stupid, and not at all helpful with what they needed to do.

But it was nice, too.

Ron's eyes flickered down to her mouth, and suddenly it was very hard not to think about being pressed up close against her on the couch, sitting in the warmth of the fire and steadfastly ignoring horcrux research. It did nothing to ease the oddly wobbly feeling that seemed to have overtaken him. The truth of it was, he didn't really care how royally Dumbledore had screwed them over, if he had at all. He'd given Ron a way to come back; and now that he had, everything else seemed ... secondary. It might not seem that way in the morning, but in the moment, he was simply pleased to be here - with her.

He leaned closer to her, letting his forehead rest against hers. It was strange how coming back had been such a relief.
