WHO: Daphne Greengrass & Dean Thomas
WHAT: A random run in between the two most unlikely people.
WHERE: A random corridor.
WHEN: Some time before dinner?
RATING: PG-13? (who knows...)

With school starting up again life at Hogwarts could almost pass for being normal. So many things happened over Christmas break that Daphne was beginning to question if this was what she had to look forward to after school as well. Chaos throughout the wizarding world had everyone on edge, purebloods, halfbloods, and muggleborns alike. While Daphne was just as confused as ever about everything going on, she did a pretty good job of covering up her apprehension and confusion. Especially with the recent muggle registration act in place, Daphne wasn't quite sure where she stood with all this madness. On one hand she firmly believed that muggles should be kept out of the wizarding world, but on the other hand she cared so little for anything that didn't involve her directly that she wanted to shrug this off as just another attempt to get people to care about that didn't really need caring. It wasn't that Daphne was an uncaring soul, she just felt better leaving things alone. It made life easier to tolerate if you just held everything with equal disregard.

Completely engrossed in her book, The Philosophy of the Mundane: Why Muggles Prefer Not to Know by Professor Mordicus Egg. Daphne was practically finished with it, only three chapters left. Despite claiming disregard for muggles, after her conversation with Dean about muggle devices, her curiosity was piqued. Not really to study them, but to get an idea of what else they were missing out on. For lack of a better way to describe it, while reading about muggles, Daphne felt a sense of superiority over them. Huge metal flying crafts seemed so pointless in comparison to a simple apparating spell. Devices to re-heat things, store massive amounts of information, their money. It all seemed useless when there was magic to do it all.

Black patent leather heels hit the stones rhythmically, as peripheral vision made sure that she didn't smack into a wall, or into any students. Blue eyes seemed completely engrossed in the book, as her feet aimlessly took her through the hallways. White knee highs ran up sinfully long legs as a black pleated skirt hugged her slender hips. Robes were left in the dormitories considering all her classes were over for the day. A black sweater clung to her frame as the crisp white collar of a button down shirt was visible and the green and silver tie. Slytherin crest was worn proudly upon her sweater.

Finally turning down a quiet hallway, steps slowed down to enjoy the silence around her. Without bothering to pay attention to where she was going, Daphne just kept her nose stuck in that book.

"Well, I suppose you will just have to go into hiding. Learn how to tie your shoes properly, and change your name. Thomas Dean has a nice ring to it." She said in a teasing sort of manner. Glancing sideways at him, "I suppose not, though, I don't see much sense in worrying about them while you know that they are all right. Yeah? I mean, save the worrying until there is something to truly worry about." That was Daphne's opinion at least.

At the mention of Daphne actually trying to talk to some people, she had to look at Dean straight forward. Wasn't talking to him enough? She really had no desire to talk to more people. Lips curled into a smirk at the compliment. "Is that what they say, or is that your own opinion, Thomas?" That smile was playful. Was it obvious she was flirting with him?

"Don't think we're quite to that point. But thought about it a bit," Dean confessed. He gave her a smile. "I'm trying to do that. Once in a while a little worrying sneaks through. Should I come find you when it starts, so you can distract me?" he teased.

He lifted his eyebrows. "Bit of both? I mean I'm in Gryffindor, so I hear a lot of the Slytherin bashing. And whatever they say, no one in their right mind could call you pug-faced now, could they? Since you're about as nice looking as they come." He grinned. "Of course you're a Slytherin, so you still kick puppies and all, I'm sure."

"I couldn't think of a better distraction, I'll just remind you how insignificant you are in this world, and reassure you that you and your family are the last people on their minds." Daphne teased right back. At lease he was taking her taunting and teasing in stride. Most students took her too seriously, or were too shocked to believe that she was joking around. Other times, she just cared too little to pay them any mind. Actually, that was most of the time. Daphne rarely paid attention to anyone, the fact that she was talking to Dean, let along flirting with him was... totally out of her 'stereotype' around the school.

Gaze broke away from him briefly as a bright shade of crimson surfaced on her cheeks and that smirk turned into a smile. Shaking her head, "Of course, you're in Gryffindor, you're supposed to make fun of us Slytherins. Those puppies deserve it, we can't have competition with our canine looking housemates." Head lifted to bring that blue gaze back on his own stare, as her lips curled into a grin to mirror his own.

Dean didn't really have a type. He fancied different sorts of girls. But he liked girls who were strong willed and fit, and Daphne was both of those things. He was most definitely flirting. Daphne was pretty, and he was pretty sure she was flirting with him, too. So he wasn't likely to not flirt back. He didn't expect anything to come of it, but he was enjoying it nonetheless. "So your idea of distraction is a kick in the teeth, eh Greengrass?" he teased. "Can't say I'm surprised."

The blush was new, and Dean couldn't help but grin, reaching up to brush her hair back a little so he could see her face better. "Yeah well, most puppies are wankers. Little known fact," he answered, laughing a little.

"Of course not," She stated matter of factly. "I would hate to dirty my lovely shoes." Leg lifted to show off a neatly shined patent leather shoe. Turning it so it captured the light within the corridor before allowing it to rest back down on the floor. "Having you learned by now, Thomas, I'm not one for surprises."

Daphne didn't have a type, but that was because she just pushed people away. Why she was even bothering with Dean Thomas, she had no idea. Even when his hand lifted to brush back her hair, she didn't pull back like she normally would. Instead, she found herself leaning towards his hand just slightly, which ultimately brought her closer to him. "Does that include kittens? We're notorious for stuffing them in bags and tossing them over bridges." An amused smirk curled onto her lips, as those blue eyes glanced up at him.

"They're very nice shoes," Dean agreed, smiling a little and looking. He wasn't looking at her shoes though. He was very plainly looking at her legs. And he peeked up and gave her a wry grin and a lifted eyebrow, not really trying to hide just what he was looking at either. He was pretty sure she'd wanted him to look anyway.

He saw the little move toward him and reaching up to run his fingers through her hair carefully, since she gave him the opportunity. He half expected to have his head bitten off for it still, but he did it anyway. "Kittens too, huh? I don't know. Maybe you're a monster after all. Kittens are pretty bloody cute."

"Precisely why I would hate to ruin them by kicking someone in the teeth." Daphne watched his eyes look everywhere BUT her shoes. Which just made her feel like she ought to show off her sinfully long legs. One leg lifted to cross over the other as she situated herself on the seat a little better.

"See, that's the problem." A finely sculpted brow arched, her voice lowering just slightly. There was no need to talk so loudly, considering they were in such a close proximity of each other. "Kittens are too cute, we hate cute things. Merlin forbid we actually feel something over than resentment, and disgust." An amused smirk curled on her lips once more, as eyes followed his hand as it brushed through her hair.

Well now she was just inviting him to look. Which he did, grinning a little. She had very nice legs.

"All cute things, hmm? So what do you do when you've got a cute little firstie in Slytherin? I mean then is it house loyalty, or hatred for cute things that kicks in?" he asked, pretending to mull it over.

"Must get a bit dull too. Only feeling resentment and disgust. What about having a good laugh, or getting brassed off, or feeling like a good snog, then? Do you never work any of that in?"

"A first year... cute?!" Daphne scoffed, "Firsties are anything but cute, regardless of house. Slytherin firsties are the worse. Pretentious little prats." What was really sad was that Daphne was being completely honest at this point.

"Never a dull moment, it's a lot of work hating everything. Of course, we have times to indulge ourselves, but we're usually too busy to really notice anything else." Daphne didn't notice how tightly she was gripping her book, until her knuckles were turning white. Nails marks were made into the cover of the book as she seemed to be holding back. Holding back what? Who knew.

"Of course, you Gryffindors must know all about good laughs, and snogging. You lot don't seem like the type to get too brassed about something, unless it's revolving around us snakes."

"I dunno. I mean I was a cute first year. Bet you were too, all gawky long legs and snobby pretentious brattishness," Dean teased. "You probably weren't the kind running about with a snotty nose though at least."

Dean took in the tightly gripped book and lifted his eyebrows. "That so? So really, you don't notice anyone else, hmm? Bit strange, when you're chatting me up, Greengrass. Do I get special treatment since I saved you from the squid?"

He laughed. "Oh we get brassed. All the time, about the stupidest rubbish too. That bit about Gryffindors being reckless and all having tempers isn't all that far off." Dean had less than most, but he had his moments.

"I'm rather fond of my long legs, they were never gawky." Once more her legs stretched out, as she tilted her head to admire them. That amused smile remained on her lips, as she glanced back at him. "I was not that type of girl, though I shared - or rather, I still do share - a dorm with all of them. All the pug-faced looking ones, even a trolls in the mix."

As he pointed out that was she talking to him, fingers eased up on the book, her grip loosening just slightly. "Are you complaining, Thomas? Would you prefer I go back to ignoring your existence?"

"Ah, yes, Gryffindors, the infamous reckless risk takers." Smirking, Daphne tilted her head down just slightly, that playful look returning, "So tell me, Thomas, what sort of reckless risks have you taken recently?"

"Oh come on, Daph. Everyone's got a gawky stage, right?" Dean had been skinny as a rail, and was still filling out into his height. Though he was almost there, these days. "Doesn't that break the girl-code, and the Slytherin-code? Calling your housemates dogs and trolls?"

"Not complaining at all," he answered. "Can't say I mind having you chat me up."

He smiled. "Well. . . I defied the Ministry and came back to school instead of toddling in to be checked over. I tried to eat beets, even though they smell awful. And I got caught ogling the prettiest Slytherin's legs." He paused and then added. "And then after I stared at Malfoy's legs, I looked at yours." He grinned at her widely, making it obvious he was having her on.

"Perhaps in Gryffindor. Don't you know all Slytherin's are born perfect? Top pedigree of dog, and trolls." A brow arched slightly, as she shot him a questioning look, "A girl-code? Slytherin code? I'm in Slytherin, not Hufflepuff. I can guarantee that they are talking about me right now. Probably something along the lines of a spoiled prat."

Daphne was going to say more on the matter, but laughter took over most of it. A hand pressed to her mouth to try and control herself. Laughing wasn't something Daphne was used to, but the fact that Dean had a very good sense of humor, laughing couldn't be helped. "Oh that Draco Malfoy and his stunning legs," Daphne mused as she shook her head. "Mine must be nothing in comparison to Malfoys." Oh if her sister knew that she was making fun of Draco.... with Dean Thomas no less, she would never hear the end of it.

"Of course, I can only go a far as admiring them, my sister has her pretty little fingers wrapped around him. She would be devastated to know that I am mocking him like that." Laughter finally ceased, and Daphne just smirked.

"So dogs and trolls, but well-bred ones, eh?" Dean asked. "Got a bit of an ego, Greengrass. Believe it or not, people aren't always talking about you, Daph. Maybe sometimes, but not always."

He laughed as she did and wrinkled his nose. "Trust me, you definitely have better legs than Malfoy. And your sister's a pretty thing too. might not have anything on her big sister, but she could do better than Malfoy's pointy face." Dean had no reason to love Draco bloody Malfoy.

"Besides - if your sister is dating Draco Malfoy, then she'd better get used to people poking fun at her boyfriend."

"Trust me, Thomas," A playful smirk curled on Daphne's lips, as she leaned towards him just a little bit more, "They are talking about me, it's what they do best." Head tilted just slightly before she sat back, shifting in her seat just a bit more. "In all honesty, when I leave this ruddy school, I want to live somewhere nice and quite, away from all this bloody nonsense about blood purities, and social classes, and rubbish like that. Alone, and quiet, without having to worry about Death Eaters, and bloody muggle registrations." Rolling her eyes, gaze looked down at her book briefly.

Shaking her head finally, she gave Dean a sideways glance. "Let's stop talking about Draco bloody Malfoy. Hell, I hear enough about between my sister and Pansy, that the last thing I want to talk to you about is Draco Malfoy." Hands finally unlaced from gripping the book so tightly, to press her palms against the cold stone seat she was sitting on. Fingers drummed against the edge, as she turned her head to rest her chin on her shoulder and settle to blue gaze on him.

"Paranoia doesn't suit you, Daph," Dean answered, looking amused. It took an enormous ego to assume someone was ALWAYS talking about you. Dean was fairly sure that at any given point in time, the chance of anyone talking about him was fairly close to zero. Daphne was a bit more likely, true. But he still thought there wasn't people yapping about her as often as she thought there was. He didn't mind the ego though. It was a bit cute in an odd way.

"Sounds like a good plan to me. Can't say I wouldn't like something a bit quieter too." Dean had his own idle hopes. He'd like to make a living as an artist, have his own flat, or one with Seamus, that sort of thing. He didn't figure it was likely to happen though. So he wasn't sure what he'd do out of school. Get a job somewhere, he supposed.

"Right," he agreed. "Fair enough. What would you rather talk about?" Dean asked her, tilting his head a little and smiling a little, dropping his hand to catch her fingers where they drummed - ostensibly to stop the drumming, but really just leaving his hand atop hers.

Sure, it was a bit egotistical, but Daphne never said she was a modest girl. She wasn't paranoid, just more conscious of people and their tendencies... Or lack thereof. Her housemates were notorious of gossiping and talking about eachother, Daphne knew that they talked about her, mainly because she talks about them right back. A tiny smile just curled on her lips, while Dean might question it, Daphne knew better.

"After this year of bloody insanity a quiet life sounds nice."

Daphne fell very quiet when his hand moved ontop of her's. Glancing up at him, a finely sculpted brow arched slightly. "I...." voice trailed off as she looked back down at their hands. "I suddenly don't feel like talking." A sly smirk surfaced as she leaned towards him just a slightly bit more.

"Do you?" Her voice was low, and quiet almost like she was luring him to lean closer to her.

"Seems like things are getting more crazy instead of less," Dean observed. He wondered if it was the build toward the climax or something. Things had to come to a head sometime, right? He just hoped it came out well in the end. He had friends too invested in everything for him to think about otherwise.

He smiled a little as she trailed off, watching the smirk and the way she leaned in. It was a pretty clear invitation, really. Dean wasn't the most observant of boys when it came to flirting - but he wasn't dense either. "I can think of better things to do," he answered, just as quietly.

He lifted his hand to thread through her hair, brushing it back, and then leaned in, catching her mouth in slightly cautious kiss.

"Unreasonably so," she agreed. Daphne was beginning to wonder if it all meant something. She wasn't one to usually care about such things, but considering some the events thus far have involved her, she's truly wondering if something is building up to climatic finish.

No matter; all thoughts were instantly brushed aside the moment she felt Dean's fingers lace into her hair and his lips press against hers. Eyes flashed open wide for a brief moment. Everything in her mind was screaming to pull away in horror and disgust. Mind running rampant with thoughts of smacking him, and screaming... Yet, it felt so bloody good.

Eyes closed, finally, and a hand lifted to slowly trace her fingers over his jaw line. Her touch was feather light, just as gentle and cautious as her kiss. Daphne wasn't notorious for snogging, but she wasn't a stranger to it either. There was really only one other boy who saw this side of her, so why Dean was special enough to see it, she didn't know. All she knew was that Dean and her were kissing, and part of her didn't want this to end.

Dean wasn't exactly FOREIGN to snogging. He'd done his fair share with Ginny, and a few others. Ginny had been a bloody good kisser, too.

Snogging pureblood Slytherins who spent half of their time mocking him - admittedly more in fun than meanly - was new, though. And Dean had still half thought he might get slapped.

He wasn't though, and after a moment Dean shifted closer and the tentative kiss deepened a little, hand sliding to the back of her neck and gripping lightly, thumb running a line along the nape of her neck. It was a pretty good kiss really, once they both got over being surprised by it happening at all.

He pulled away finally, after a second, longer kiss, free hand running along her arm lightly. "Bit better than talking?" he suggested quietly.

Daphne could see the rumors flying within her house. 'Slytherin pureblood snogs muggleborn Gryffindor'. A thrill of excitement ran up her spine as she realized this kiss was definitely going to have to be kept on the down low. If any of her friends found out... Or worse her parents? Daphne knew she would be ruined. She also knew that her parents would likely turn in the Thomas family if they found out.

As Dean pulled back eyes fluttered open to look at him. This was one of the reasons why she didn't want the kiss to ever stop. The awkwardness that would follow was inevitable.

Fingers ran down his neck to fix his collar. Clearing her throat, Daphne nodded. "Just a bit." During their kiss the book on her lap shifted slightly, and as Daphne moved a bit just to give herself some space the book went crashing to the floor with a loud clatter.

Wincing slightly, Daphne pulled back completely to look down at the book before looking around the corridor. "I should get going."

Dean bent to pick up the book when she dropped it, lifting it for her to take and then smiling, watching her face for a moment. "Yeah, probably," he agreed. Dean wasn't stupid. He knew there was as much chance of Daphne wanting to be seen snogging a mudblood as there was of him suddenly turning green.

Would be nice if she hadn't wanted to run off five seconds later though.

He brushed a thumb over her lips anyway before he dropped his hand away and sat back. "See you. . . around?" he asked. He'd have asked her out for a drink or something, but that was a bit hard with a girl who wouldn't want to be seen out with him.

Daphne didn't know what was wrong with her, this sort of thing was completely out of the norm for her. She couldn't place what possessed her to kiss him and now conflicting emotions were racing through her mind. She's Daphne bloody Greengrass! The ice queen of Slytherin, and now she's snogging Dean Thomas, a mudblood of Gryffindor? Something was very confused within her and she hated to admit it.

Glancing down at the book when it was offered to her, Daphne took it with a silent 'thank you'. Fingers grasped the book tightly as she nodded. A tiny smile managed to push it's way on to her lips as his thumb brushed across her lips.

Climbing to her feet a hand came to rest on his shoulder. Leaning down her lips pressed to the corner of his lips in a very brief kiss. "Perhaps." Daphne had no doubt in her mind that she would see him again, but she felt it best to test him with possibility that he might not see her. After all, when all was said and done, Daphne was a girl, and what girl didn't like to leave without a little mystery and intrigue lingering in the air?

Dean stood when she did, but didn't reach to try to stop her. Just smiled a little, watching her pull herself together. The smile widened at the little kiss and he brushed his fingers through her hair once more.

"Hope so," he told her, but he left it at that, letting her walk away, still grinning a bit. And watching her. Since it was a nice sort of view, really, with the long long legs. And what was at the top of her legs.
