Who: Hermione and Ron
What: Talking
Where: Forest of Dean
When: Tonight
Rating/Warning: TBA, but Ron will likely blow up...

It had been easier, the last few days. Hermione wasn't sure what it was, but she thought it had something to do with the fact that Harry had taken to taking long walks through the forest. She worried that he wouldn't come back, and so was tracking him when he did with a locator charm, but he always came back and while he was gone - taking the horcrux with him, and often to the lake, she'd noticed - she could breathe easier and didn't feel the need to hex everything that moved. It was a relief, really.

And she'd been toying with the idea of how to tell the boys that Viktor had offered to help. She smiled, thinking about Viktor and his offer. How he'd come back to England for her, or so she imagined, and how he wanted to be involved with the Order. With fighting. It just solidified all the reasons she'd kept writing to him after the Triwizard Tournament. All the reasons she'd held on to that friendship even while things were going badly all around her. That he could make her smile here... well, it was a tribute, really.

She was still smiling a bit when she went out to the fire. They'd moved camps a few nights ago. There were more berries and things here, at least. She wondered where Ron was as she sat down. Perhaps she ought to put tracking charms on him, as well.

He was talking about the weather? Hermione thought that was taking the civil, friendly types of conversation they'd been able to have for the last few days a bit far. Still, she looked up at the sky before she looked down to poke the fire again. It seemed to burn a little longer with the twigs from this part of the forest, too, and she wondered if that was just her imagination. "It is," she finally answered, then she turned to look over at him, moving a bit on the log she was using as a seat so that he could have more room beside her. "Where were you?"

Ron held out his hand for a moment, still half-full of the local fruit, such as it was. "Just wrapping up dinner. Not too far away." It was one of the better sites they'd found. He would be sorry to see the last of it, though of course it couldn't last too long. "Have you heard anything - from home? From anyone at school, I mean." He'd been about to ask after Harry, but he didn't really want to steer their conversation in that direction. Even if he was - a little - concerned.

"Ginny," Hermione nodded, sighed and looking back at the fire after shaking her head at the berries. They had to get something else, soon, if just to keep their strength up. "She sent clippings again. McGonagall announced that the Ministry no longer has control over Hogwarts. And, oh, apparently Malfoy gave up his Captaincy." Not that she thought that last part was important. It did seem strange, though.

"That'll go over really well," he muttered, kicking a bit of debris into the fire. She was absolutely right, of course, and watching the Ministry's excuse for a professor get run out of Hogwarts a couple years ago had been a sight to remember, but ... he wasn't sure what good a public announcement would do, in the end. But maybe it wouldn't hurt. How could things possibly get worse, after all?

His head shot up, and his eyes narrowed. "What? Why?" he asked suspiciously, before hope broke over his face. "Is he injured? Maybe he's injured." >Really, really badly.

"I thought the same. The Minister's already made a statement about how it has no weight. But McGonagall. I mean, she wouldn't say it unless she had a plan for carrying it out."

Hermione shrugged and watched the fire flare up as Ron kicked debris into it. This came felt somehow a lot more comfortable than the last had. But she hated the idea that it was because Harry had spent less time in this one with them.

"Ginny didn't say," Hermione answered, "I'm sure if he were though, she'd have said so?" Because Malfoy hurt would have been good news to pass along to her brother, Ginny would have known that.

Hermione tried to think if it was the right time to mention Viktor, but better now than later when Harry was back and tensions were running high again. "I did hear from someone else, though...." She started, slowly.

"Yeah ... she'll have a plan, I guess. Doesn't mean they're going to make it easy for her to carry out, though." But no doubt she'd give them hell right back, and everyone would just have to hope that would be enough. He gave a brief, noncommittal huh and popped another berry in his mouth. Ginny would absolutely have mentioned any significant injuries, but he comforted himself with the thought that Malfoy still had plenty of opportunities to break a bone or two. It was still early in the year.

"Who was that, then?" he glanced over at her, chewing thoughtfully. It sounded important, but maybe that was wishful thinking. She'd have shared anything really helpful immediately, he knew that.

It might be important, and she could have shared it earlier but she was sure that Ron wouldn't react well. She wanted to wait until they were having a good night, at least, before bringing it up.

"Well, it was... Viktorkrum - " she rushed that last part, almost mumbled, and looking into the fire.

"Who?" Ron leaned a little closer, not sure he'd heard right. It sounded like she had said - "Vic -"

He nearly choked. "Viktor Krum?" He drew back again, staring down at her. "He wrote to you? What the hell is he writing to you for? What does he want?" His stomach twisted up unpleasantly. He'd probably had too many berries. "How old is he now, anyway?"

Hermione rolled his eyes. "What does his age have to do with anything, Ron?" She asked, then softened her tone and looked at him again, wanting to avoid the choking, unpleasant side of Ron as much as possible. "He wrote me because he was worried. I think a lot of people might be worried about us, Ron, don't you?"

"They certainly should be. We have a lot to worry about." And there were a lot of people they'd be better off not taking help from, weren't there? The phrase fraternizing with the enemy was featuring very prominently in his mind, but he somehow refrained from using it. "I mean, why's he just written to you now? What's he doing?" He knew perfectly well what Krum wasn't doing, having kept, as usual, a dutifully careful eye on the headlines in the Quidditch world, but this, this was too much of a coincidence, wasn't it?

"Ron, Viktor and I have been writing to each other for years. It isn't as if he just started writing me." Though he hadn't written since the wedding, but that wasn't his fault. Hermione at least kept tabs on what had been happening with her friend, even if she'd had other things to worry about.

"He's back in England. He's working for the Ministry in the transportation department. He wants to help."

He gaped at her. For years? "You have, have you? Well, that's fantastic. How is Vicky doing? I can't think of any reason why we shouldn't be writing back and forth with a Ministry employee who's decided that he wants to help us. You know, I'll bet there are a lot of other people in the Ministry who are worried about us, too. Maybe we should send them something." He was vaguely aware that he was getting a little out of hand - he sounded just a bit too loud, even in his own ears - but there was no reversing it now.

Hermione grit her teeth, colour flaring up in her own cheeks. She'd mentioned his name once, that certainly wasn't reason for Ron to fly off in a tiff.

"Yes, Ron, for years. We're friends, remember. And it isn't as if I was making him a map to where we are so that he can send the Ministry for us. He wants to leave us food and other things we can't get while we're out here. Help. He's not trying to sell us to Voldemort! Honestly, don't be daft."

Ron cringed when she said that name - it did nothing at all to improve his mood. "I'm not being daft, I'm being careful! Even if he really does want to help you," a concession he was only making for the sake of argument, "Do you really trust him not to get - followed, or caught out, or something? I mean, we all saw plenty of him fourth year, and he had a bit more in the way of brawn than brains, didn't he?" He was almost unthinkingly determined not to accept help from Krum - it hardly mattered to him which excuse he chose.

"Viktor is a good friend, and smart enough to - " Hermione stopper herself, because she heard her voice raising and she didn't want to fight with him over Viktor. She didn't know how to avoid it though, if he was going to act like a complete prat.

"I trust him. You should too, you know. He's never done anything to you."

"He's never done anything for me, either. We're not even really talking to Order members, and now you want to bring into the fold some pen pal of yours who spent seven years in the palm of some Death Eater's hand and works for the Ministry? It's not that I don't want to trust him," he said, standing up and trying not to give in to the urge to pace, "But I think you're probably letting your feelings get in the way of the decision, don't you?" Yes, no doubt that was it.

"My feelings?" Hermione glared incredulously at him. "You can't think I... Ron. He's a friend. Yes I trust him, the same way I would trust... Harry. Or Ginny. I'm not bringing him in to anything. But he made a good point about being more able than others to get us things we might need. He works for the transportation department!"

"Yeah, alright," Ron muttered, crossing his arms over his chest and glaring out into the woods. Never mind that she'd only known Krum a few years, never mind the mountain of perfectly good reasons they ought not to speak to him. "You trust him. The transportation department. Great." The only thing that kept him from shouting again was the way she'd compared him to Harry - as a friend. It appeased him slightly, until he started to really think about it. If she thought about the two of them the same way, Merlin ... As though Harry on his own hadn't been enough to cope with? "You'll do what you want, I guess."

Hermione watched him, confused. He'd looked for a moment like he was going to be rational about it and not be a complete prat, but now he was glaring at the trees and grumbling.

"Obviously, I won't. It isn't just about me. That's why I brought it up. I think he can help us. If you and Harry don't want me to ask him..."

She'd still write him, but she'd think of something.

"You know what I want," he snapped. He almost wished he hadn't just rattled off a list of good reasons not to say a single word to the man, because he thought he would have liked to write him and tell him exactly what he thought about working for the transportation department (although part of him recognized immediately that that would be sheer idiocy). "That's not even the kind of help we need anyway, is it? All the food in the world would only help us so much."

"It would help you to stop complaining about berries every time we ate," Hermione pointed out, jumping up from the log she'd been sitting on. "And I don't know what you want, Ron. I don't think you do either. You don't want anyone to help us, but what we're doing isn't working here, and no one is coming up with better ideas. What exactly do you want us to do?"

"I want use to figure this out and go home! Or - stop messing around in the woods like we know what we're doing and find someone who does! If we're going to risk giving ourselves away, it might as well be someone who has a chance of getting us some real help!" He knew what he didn't want, anyway. "It sure as hell isn't working. How long are we going to do it?"

"Until someone comes up with a better plan!" Hermione yelled back at him, her voice getting away from her. "Or Harry figures out what he wants to do about the horcruxes, or we figure out where the last ones are. And if we're looking for people who have a chance of helping us, why not someone who has access to all the means of magical transportation. Who can help keep us hidden!"

"I don't know!" Ron shouted, his frustration ready to boil over. "But I don't like him!" It wasn't even something he could really explain, and saying it louder and louder didn't seem to be helping. He had been focused for so long on hoping for the destruction of the locket that he'd almost let himself forget there were who knew how many more of these things to hunt down. The task seemed interminable, and unbearable. "We can find someone else!"

"Sure," Hermione said sarcastically. "I'll just ask all of the other people at the Ministry of Magic that want to help us at the moment. Or any of the other international wizards we know who might have access to things we can't get."
