Who: Harry, Ginny
When: Thursday Night (Backdated)
Where: Room of Requirement
What: Checking the RoR's enchantments. Ginny uses a flimsy excuse to get Harry alone.
Rating: T.B.A. Probably tame.
Open/Closed: Closed.

Harry met Ginny downstairs a few minutes late. Largely because he'd tried to decide if he should bring Hermione or not. And then when he decided that he should, he'd had to get Parvati to go up and fetch her from the girls' room so he could ask her. When he'd explained that Ginny had asked him to come with her so they could experiment a bit with the Room of Requirement to see if it could give them multiple exits or entrances, and how safe it was, Hermione had given him a look that said he was an idiot in an infinite number of ways, and then told him to go with Ginny before rolling her eyes and going back upstairs to do her homework.

So no help there.

Harry grimaced a bit but headed downstairs, cloak tucked under his arm as he met Ginny in front of the portrait. "Sorry - I had to ask Hermione something. Ready?" he asked Ginny, reaching up to push his glasses further up on his nose and giving her a slightly awkward smile. He really missed the days when the youngest Weasley didn't turn him into a bubbling idiot, sometimes.

Harry wasn't very smooth. It was just how he was. He'd been inept with Cho, for the most part. He could talk to girls just fine, so long as there was no chance of snogging, or him wanting to snog. One of his best friends was a girl. He had no idea why it made so much difference, but it seemed to. Sometimes he wished Sirius was still alive - for many reasons, most of them much more important - but at the moment, just to see if he knew how to not sound like a tongue-tied prat. He'd gotten the idea from the pictures he'd seen that neither his dad or Sirius had much trouble with girls.

And she asked what he'd hoped she wouldn't. Naturally. "I'd like to. I would, but we're not really going. Don't tell anyone that though. But yeah, I can't. Sorry?" He shot her a quick look and then suggested quickly. "Maybe next time?"

"Oh," Ginny curled her hands in her pockets and continued to watch the worn down stone underneath her. His refusal disheartened her, but the offer of next time, even though it was preceded by a maybe, cheered her slightly.

"Where're you going?" She asked, even though she knew he wouldn't be able to tell her. She knew enough to know that the three of them, Harry, Hermione and her brother, were doing something secret and importantly, likely for Dumbledore. But why he couldn't let her in on the secret, why she of all people couldn't be trusted with whatever it was, she didn't know. "Is it something for Dumbledore?"

Harry winced a little. "Yeah. . . something like that," he answered evasively. It wasn't that he didn't think he could trust Ginny. Or Luna, or Neville, or any of the others, for the matter. It was just. . . it was something HE had to do. Bad enough that Hermione and Ron were always in the thick of it. The more people who knew, the more people who'd want to help, and the more chance there was that someone would get hurt. Or that someone would get caught and forced to tell something. It was safer when everyone else was in the dark, was all. For everyone.

He wasn't sure she'd actually listen to that, though. "We can talk about it in the Room," he said finally. Not that he would tell her, really. But he could. . . talk around it better when they were more secure.

They were getting closer to the Room's entrance, and Harry looked around, making sure no one was watching before approaching the corridor. He had the cloak, but he'd put it on when they left, maybe. Unless the room knew how to deliver them an exit in the Gryffindor common room, somehow.

In the darkness, Ginny rolled her eyes, getting frustrated with Harry. He took so much on by himself, seemingly without realising the vast amount of people who would be more than willing to help him. She understood that from a very young age, he'd only had himself to rely on, but they'd been friends for years. If he couldn't trust her now, could he ever?

"Yeah," Ginny murmured, disbelievingly. Sure, they would. She glanced down the corridor, following Harry through the shadows towards the Room. "What should we ask it for?" she whispered, standing beside him and looking up at the blank stretch of wall.

"I don't know that it's even a matter of asking. I mean when we first found it, it just turned into what we needed. So maybe just. . . think about what we need for the D.A. Multiple exits. Room to practice. Maybe uhhh. . . a one way window. So we can see who's outside before we leave?" Harry suggested. He tried to focus on that part, waiting for Ginny to suggest anything he hadn't thought of, and then adding that to the specifications in his head, hoping the room would accommodate them.

When they stepped inside, the room looked mostly the same as it had back when the D.A. first began meeting there. There was a few changes though. There were five doors around the room, each with a color above them - green, yellow, scarlet, and blue. The last was a sort of. . .tree bark brown. Harry thought maybe that meant it led out to the grounds or the forest or something.

He let the door swing shut behind them and turned to see the large window in it that hadn't been visible from the other side of the door. Harry grinned, a little delighted as he still sometimes was when magic did things he hadn't known if it could. "Brilliant."

As they stepped inside, Ginny opened her eyes and let out a low whistle. "Harry," she breathed, still holding his hand. "This is amazing," she looked around and squeezed his hand, taking the room in. Even though she'd been using the Room of Requirement for quite some time now, the depth of its abilities still could amaze her.

"What d'you think that brown door is for?" She asked, reluctantly letting go of his hand to move across the room. "And these other ones? They probably go back to near our common rooms?" She looked at the doors, rolling her eyes at the green bannered one. "Really, Room?" She asked, glancing up at the ceiling. "Do we really need one for the Slytherins?"

"The forest, maybe? Or just outside? I don't know. It's great, though." Harry grinned too, looking around. He dropped his eyes to their joined hands when she squeezed, answering the light touch before she let go and then walking over toward the brown door, pulling it open to peer through. It was too dark to see much, but the bite of the air and the smell of earth said that it led outside.

He shut it again, looking back toward the green and then grimacing. "The entire House can't be rubbish, can it? I mean there has to be one decent on shoved in there, somewhere? It can't hurt to have just in case, I guess. The room seems to think so, anyway."

Ginny shrugged, resisting the urge to reach out and run her fingers through Harry's hair as he leaned past her to the door. She felt like a coiled spring around Harry, all wound up and ready to explode; she wanted to pounce him, to hold him and snog him, the urge was so strong it was almost a physical ache.

"I suppose," she said, after a moment, shrugging. "I mean, it works the other way. Pettigrew was a Gryff, after all." She shortened the name of the house like Sam did and smiled inwardly at the thought of her friend. "I guess it doesn't hurt," she paused and furrowed her brows, slightly. "Unless these are entrances as well as exits, then there'd be a way in right near the Slytherin common room."

Harry grimaced at mention of Pettigrew. Some days he still wondered if he'd done the right thing, since it ended up with him escaped and helping Voldemort return. It didn't feel very right, even if it had been what he would have thought his dad wanted.

"Yeah. I might have ended up there, if Hagrid and everyone hadn't told me that it was a bad House to be in," Harry answered with a shrug.

He frowned. "We can test it. I'll step out with the cloak, you shut the door behind me and see if I can get back in? If not, I'll just run back under the cloak," Harry suggested.

"You were?" Ginny arched her eyebrows in surprise. How different would Harry be if he'd ended up in Slytherin? Would he have still been friends with Ron, considering they'd met on the train? Would he have ignored House stereotypes and unspoken rules and been the one to bring Gryffindors and Slytherins together? Or would he have ended up mean, cruel and manipulative and evil? "I can't picture you as anything but a Gryff." She said, honestly.

At his suggestion, Ginny nodded and crossed to the door with the scarlet banner hanging above it. Harry unfolded the cloak and just as he was draping it over himself, she darted forward and pressed her lips against his, kissing him deeply.

"Yeah. Me neither. The hat was pretty hung up on me at first, though. I didn't want to be in Slytherin, so it didn't put me there." Harry shrugged, smiling wryly. "I guess I'm a manipulative prat underneath it all."

He didn't think he was, but during his second year he'd worried about it. Now he just thought maybe it was one more thing linking him to Voldemort, and that was why the hat thought he was a Slytherin. Or that the house divisions were rubbish, if people would just not pay as much attention to them.

He was about to pull the cloak around himself when suddenly Ginny was there, kissing him, and Harry froze, eyes widening comically behind his spectacles.

Harry didn't have a very varied kissing background. And most of it had gone badly. Plus this was Ginny, who made him an idiot on a regular basis just by being pretty and fun. It took him a full beat to even kiss back, and then when he did it was hesitant. It wasn't that he didn't want to kiss her - but there were loads of reasons why he shouldn't.

At the moment being bollocks at snogging was fairly far toward the top of the list.

He broke away after a moment, cheeks hot. "Ermm. . ."

Ginny couldn't keep her smile to herself, standing here, snogging someone who was half invisible and she let out a little laugh. Harry'd kissed back though, at least she thought he had, and that was something. Her heart fluttered happily in her chest and she was glad they were alone, away from any brothers or parents or anyone else to interrupt them. There wasn't that press of secrecy like there had been at the beginning of the summer, the hurried, awkward moments they'd shared, always aware that someone could walk in one them at any moment.

This was good, this was nice. Sure, Harry wasn't the best snogger in the history of snogdom, but that was alright. Ginny was perfectly okay with teaching him. He stepped back, uncertainly and she gave him a small, encouraging smile, biting the inside of her cheek to keep her bubbly grin inside.

He wasn't moving towards her again, but he also wasn't running away and she swayed towards him slightly, hoping he'd take the hint and kiss her again.

Harry was inept. But he wasn't COMPLETELY daft. He saw the way she leaned in, and that she was smiling, and he grinned back a little, starting to lean back in.

He'd only just started to kiss her when the part of his brain that Harry would probably term "sensible" and Ginny might have another name for kicked in. "Ermm," he leaned back again, taking a step away.

Harry was hunting down bits of an evil wizard's soul. People were trying to kill him every other day. It wasn't fair to Ginny to get her any MORE involved in that, and Harry couldn't let himself think about how nice she smelled, or how soft her lips had been. He had to be practical because he couldn't HAVE a girlfriend.

Not to mention the best-friend-shaped redhead who would punch him in the face when he heard. Though that was, admittedly, an obstacle Harry probably would have ignored, normally. "Ginny. . . I like you and all. But I can't. . . we shouldn't." Bugger. "I mean with everything going on, we should just. . . be friendly. Not. . . snogging friendly." Harry wondered why she even WANTED to snog him, considering he was such a prat around her most of the time lately.

Harry was kissing her back. Harry was kissing her back. Ginny smiled into the snog, just as Harry pulled back. Her face fell even as she tried desperately to school it. She failed and for a long moment her disappointment and embarrassment was fully evident on her face before she managed to pull herself together.

A million responses ran through her head, she was aware of the danger, being with him didn't put her in any more danger, she was a blood traitor for Godric's sake, her whole family was like public enemy numbers two through ten, but nothing came out when she opened her mouth.

She felt sick, like someone had punched her in the stomach, and all she wanted to do was to run back to her dorm and sob into Sam's shirt, but she managed to ground out, "You should go check where that door lets out," while curling her hands into fists, her nails digging into her palms in a monumental effort to keep from saying anything else.

Harry saw the look on her face and bit his lip, hand emerging from nothingness to scrub awkwardly through his hair before he shoved it back in the cloak. "Gin. . . I didn't mean. . . it's not that I don't want. . . There's just loads going on, yeah? I don't even know how much I'll be around and people try to kill me every other bloody day. It's just. . . more than I should have going on right now, yeah? It's not that it wasn't. . nice." He winced inwardly at the word, knowing it was a very bad choice. It had been more than nice. It would have gotten better, he was pretty sure.

He groaned a little and then nodded. "Yeah. Just. . . shut the door after me, okay?" He had a feeling she might not be willing to open it again for him, at this point.

Gritting her teeth, Ginny crossed her arms over her chest, hugging herself tightly. "You should go." She ground out, feeling the stinging at the bridge of her nose that signalled tears and desperately not wanting Harry to see her cry.

He was talking, babbling and all Ginny heard was nice. It was nice, she was nice. Bloody NICE. Had Cho been nice? Had he gone back to Ron and Hermione after snogging Cho and said that it was nice?! Ginny bloody well thought not.

Ginny reached out and gripped the edge of the door, biting the inside her cheek to keep from shouting at him, her mouth a thin line. Nice. Well, that settled it. Clearly, Harry wanted nothing to do with her and was just trying to let her down as best he could. The prat.

"Go." She repeated, holding onto the door to keep from slamming it on him.

"Right," Harry answered nervously.

It probably wouldn't be a good idea to tell her that he noticed she was a bit like her mum when her mouth went all tight and angry like that. Like when Molly was having it out at Fred and George about something.

He ducked out the door, turning around to look. As soon as he stepped out of contact with it, the wall melted together, looking seamless. So right. One way only. Even if she left the door open. Which Harry thought she probably hadn't. Brilliant for the D.A.

And not actually that bad for him either, since it meant he got to hide in the cloak and walk the long way around back to the Room's entrance. By the time he got back, Ginny might have. . . stopped looking like she wanted to cry. Or kill him.
