Characters: Rolf Scamander & Shannon MacFusty
Setting: Monday Night at Rolf's house.
Summary: Rolf needs some catching up time with his bff.
Rating: TBD

"Snap?" Rolf looked over his shoulder, watching the hall outside his study door for a moment. He thought Shannon was still fast asleep but he could have sworn he heard a creak. After a few moments he turned back to his study, ignoring the piles of papers on his desk to watch the dogs laying about his chair. They looked back up at him with soulful eyes. He wasn’t sure why he had even bothered to look, if Shannon had woken up, the dogs would have made some reaction other than sighing or yawning. All Scout did was lift his head to reposition it on his well-chewed stuffed hippogriff and try to go back to sleep.

"You two just keep up guard," he muttered, shaking his head and smiling at the adorable laziness of his dogs. Beside him were two stacks of assignments, one pile graded papers and the other those yet to be marked. They were his NEWT students, essays concerning the German Ministry’s control of Erklings and the recent resurgence in attacks. He’d never liked Erklings and he didn’t like what the topic reminded him of, but it was something that needed discussing. Rolf pulled a new essay into his lap and waved his wand at his tea, warming it before he picked that up as well and pulled it toward himself.

Rolling over, Shannon burrowed further under the blankets, not quite ready to get up yet. She still ached and was exhausted, but starving, her raging hunger, as always, at odds with her deep fatigue. Her stomach won out and she pushed out of bed, pulling a pair of thick socks and a frumpy old sweater before pushing out of her room in search of Rolf.

This close to the moon, her senses were heightened and although she didn't want to, she could hear him downstairs in his study. She followed the slight sounds, leaning in the doorway and watching him for a moment before announcing herself. "Couldn't sleep," she said, her voice thick with exhaustion and stress for a moment before she coughed and cleared it. "Doing anything interesting?"

The boys heard Shannon before Rolf did but his head perked up promptly after theirs. "Hey," he said, spinning in his chair to face her, taking in her worn appearance and forcing himself to keep his smile up. He had half a mind to drag her back upstairs and force her back in bed, as tired as she looked. "How are you feeling?" He asked as he conjured a comfy arm chair for her to join him.

Settling on the newly appeared chair, Shannon pulled her feet up and hugged her knees to her chest. She knew she must look haggard and worn, as best as Rolf had tried to school his expression, she knew him well enough that it couldn't fool her. "Sleepy," she responded, absently winding her fingers through hair. "Sore. The usual."

Scout stood up and padded over the few feet to Shannon's chair, dropping his prized toy in her lap and resting his head on her knee. "Anything I can do?" He asked, rising anyone to go look for an appropriate potion and stroking her hair as he passed. "Taken anything yet? I think there's still some of that potion that helped last time..." The large cabinet on the other side off the office was filled with various devices, notes, potions and other odd and ends that needed a good home. He ran his hand over all the bottle labels as he spoke. "I could go get some if not."

Smiling faintly, Shannon raised her head slightly, moving it towards Rolf's touch. "Nothing yet," she shook her head, reaching down to stroke Scout's fur. "I've been sleeping." She heaved a sigh, knowing there was no point in bringing up how much she hated this. Who could love being a werewolf? She'd never been one for potions before, preferring natural remedies, but they'd become a necessity. She tried to sleep her way better but it hadn't happened yet.

She twisted around on the chair, attempting to move without dislodging Scout's head. "I think it's on the top shelf," she pointed, failing to swallow a hiss as her back twinged unexpectedly.

"I thought about bringing tea up," he said, pulling out a few bottles at random and turning them over in his hands as he read the description. "But I thought the rest would be better." He glanced back over and watched her for a moment, always worried about her. He turned back before she looked over and missed the grimace that accompanied the hiss, though he promptly spun back at the noise.

"Yeah, I think...you're right, there it is." He looked back long enough to locate the bottle and pluck it from the shelf. He pressed the bottle into her hands as he sat back down, looking at her expectantly until she took a dose, knowing it would help her even if she didn't like taking it.

Frowning as Scout dropped his head to the floor by her feet at her noise, Shannon gingerly rearranged herself on the chair, trying for the least painful position. "I wish it had helped," she responded, almost successful in keeping the bitterness out of her voice.

Though the new potion she was taking helped more, it would never be alright. The painful transformation took its toll on her, physically and mentally, although she knew she was better off than many others in her position, thanks to Rolf.

She gratefully took the bottle he passed her, turning it over in her hands before meting out a dose and swallowing it, pulling a face at the bitter taste. "All done, Mum." she handed the phial back to Rolf, sticking her tongue out at him playfully.

"Ha," Rolf said blandly, rolling his eyes at her teasing even as he failed to keep a smile off his face. He set the phial on the desk and picked his mug back up, leaning back in his chair. "I was going to see if you wanted a sandwich...but if you are going to mock me," he took a sip of his tea and tried to act aloof.

Widening her eyes, Shannon pushed her lower lip out, pulling a wibbly face. "You don't want to feed your best friend?" she asked, forcing a quaver into her voice and somehow managing to keep a smile from cracking her façade. "I'm just wasting away!" she complained, tugging at the shirt she was wearing, huge on her slim frame because it had been stolen from him.

"If you wore your own clothes," Rolf pointed out, taking another sip before he stood up. "You probably wouldn't look like you were wasting away." He stooped and kissed her forehead before he left the room without announcement or warning. He'd actually been planning to go wake her up to eat if she didn't rouse on her own within the hour, it might be needless but he couldn't help worrying about her.

Busying himself in the kitchen, Rolf waved his wand at the kettle, causing it to whistle shrilly. He poured a cup, setting it aside to steep as he dug through the fridge, pulling out roast beef, cheese, condiments and vegetables, the bread he summoned from across the room. By the time he'd assembled an impressive, hefty sandwich and sliced up an apple to accompany it, the tea was done steeping and he put everything on a tray to carry it back to her. "How can I resist that pout," he said, setting it down in front of her and picking his tea back up, ready to finish it before it needed another warming.

"Yours are more comfortable!" Shannon called at his back as he left. The potion was working, or rather, starting to, but she felt well enough to slip off the chair and onto the floor, down to Scout's level. Ruffling her fingers through his fur, she accepted his kisses, sinking down even further and stretching out beside him, resting her head on his back. He nudged his hippogriff over to her and she grinned, pressing a kiss to his nose and looking up at Rolf as he re-entered, bearing a tray. "My hero," she smiled up at him and held her hand up for him to help her stand.

"Do I have to buy you one of those as well?" He teased, helping her up as he chuckled. "He won't even share that thing with me," he settled in his chair and kicked his feet up onto the desk, leaning back as he watched her eat. "I get glares if I just walk too close to it."

Picking at the edges of the sandwich, Shannon picked it up and set it down a few times before choosing an apple slice. She knew she should eat, it would only help her feel better, but she almost didn't want to. The sandwich was so big and although Shannon knew it would be delicious, Rolf had made it after all, it seemed almost insurmountable in the face of her fatigue. She'd start small, she decided, taking a bite out of the apple. "He probably only shares with me because he knows I'm alpha," she responded, finishing her apple slice and reaching for another. "And I'd share my hippogriff with you, Critter."

"You should be more like her," Rolf said, glancing down at the dog on the floor. "Thanks, Snap. I'd share my hippogriff with you. But since mine are more the real sort, I don't know about that." He chuckled at his own joke and took another sip. He'd noticed she was picking at her food and wanted to call her on it but held his tongue. She needed to eat but she would eventually, he knew it.

To distract himself, Rolf picked the essay and quill back up. He silently read a few paragraphs, leaving Shannon to eat at her own pace. "I was going to go over to Grandfather's for dinner tomorrow," he said, eyes on the parchment.

Lifting the sandwich, Shannon took a small bite, resisting the urge to dissect it. The apple had helped and now she felt a little better, although it was probably more due to the potion she'd just taken. "Am I invited?" she asked, taking a larger bite and washing it down with some tea. She adored Rolf's grandfather and loved spending time with the older man almost as much as she loved spending time with Rolf himself. "Wait, was? You're not?"

"You're always invited, Snap," Rolf said promptly, eyes still on the paper as he fought the urge to look up and make sure she was eating. "Half the time I think they invite me round just to see you. You know your Grandfather's favourite." Her abrupt question brought his attention back up and he stared at her for a moment, brow furrowed. "Of course I'm going, I'd never hear the end of it if I didn't. I was wondering if you wanted to come, if you thought you'd be up for it. It's alright if want to stay in, they'll understand."

"No," Shannon took another bite, swallowing before she stretched, arching her back and taking stock of herself. "No, I think I'll be alright. That potion really helped." She was still sore, her bones still ached but she didn't feel as fragile as she'd felt earlier. She took another bite, feeding Scout a bit of lettuce. "I should take that earlier next time. I just always hope I won't need it."

"There's nothing wrong with taking a potion," Rolf pointed out, smiling encouringly. "I'll wake you up next time and make you take it." He knew it was a lie. Most likely he'd let her get all the rest she needed and make sure it was readily available when she woke, right beside her on the night stand. "Seriously, Snap. It's there for the help. What's so wrong about that?"

Peeling the crust off, Shannon shared with Darby, who had sidled up to her when she'd given the lettuce to Scout. "I just..." she started, taking a sip of her tea. "It's stupid." Darby laid his head down on her knee, staring up at her and doing his best to look extra cute. She rolled her eyes good naturedly and took a healthy bite, placing the sandwich back on the tray and out of easy reach. "I don't want to be chained to these potions any more than I already am."
