Who: Lennox and Rhydian
What: Having a drink.
Where: Artisan Wine Bar - Battersea
When: Eight o'clock, tonight.
Warnings: TBA

Lennox wasn't entirely sure why he was meeting with Rhydian. He was sure that there wasn't going to be anything that came of it - so he attributed it to finishing his current book and not having something to replace it until he went shopping tomorrow. Also, it was better than having to keep the lights out to avoid children wanting candy. Not that the costumes weren't nice - he just didn't have anything for them.

Besides, it had been a while since he'd even really attempted making a new friend. So he might as well pretend that he knew how to be social. Which is why, at ten 'til eight, he was waiting outside the little Wine Bar, hands shoved into the pockets of his jacket as he read over the menu that was posted beside the door.

It hadn't been nearly long enough since Rhydian had gone for a drink to try to make a new friend, but this incidence held a lot more promise than he usually expected - he had a name and a face ahead of time, and rather liked them both. He recognized Campbell - Lennox - immediately, and decided against anything but a conventional greeting. Rhydian had already known that he was the reclusive sort, at least for a Quidditch player, but he also seemed rather ... well, perhaps not straitlaced, but something like that. It had also seemed like a good idea to arrive on time.

"Lennox," he said with an undisguised grin, moving in close enough that he might have been reading the menu, too, and putting out his hand. "Happy Halloween." He'd have to save his stockpile of Seeker jokes for later in the evening.

"I'm afraid I'm not dressed to ask for treats," Lennox said, and he turned to faced Rhydian and smiled. He didn't recognize him, really, but his mum had shown him pictures of all the years leading up to Hogwarts, really, an he could recognize the boy he'd seen the proud pictures of in the man.

"Rhydian?" He asked, without needing too, and then shook the other man's hand easily enough. "Nice to meet you."

"I'm tall enough that they'd turn me away anyhow." The costume was still most of the fun, but the night was young enough. Who knew what might happen? "And you. Most men in your profession I feel like I've met several times over, really." It was nice to have a bit of mystery, especially when it was so nicely packaged. "Not all of them make as good an impression, I guess."

Lennox frowned, wondering if Rhydian meant him as well. Part of the reason he was so secretive was that, exactly. He didn't like the idea of strangers thinking they knew him, feeling that they understood something familiar about him. It wasn't that he wanted to be a mystery - he just didn't want to be the topic of that sort of focus... "Well, perhaps me a bit less so than some of me peers, yeah?"

He realized that might come off as a bit egotistical, but not until after he said it.

"Much less - almost not at all." Rhydian didn't think of it as egotistical, although he had wondered whether Lennox's private nature came from a genuine desire to withdraw or some sort of stiffness or arrogance. So far, he seemed down to earth enough. "But you like Muggle wine bars, so there's a start. And a good one, too." He held the door for him, standing to the side. "I got tired of going out around Diagon about five years ago."

"That's easier for me," Lennox agreed, chuckling softly to himself but then walking in past Rhydian and into the small wine bar. They were ushered almost immediately to a little private table, and Lennox sat down and waited for Rhydian to join him before he went on, "There's no where good around Diagon for blocks, on this side of things. And unless you like the Squid, the options inside are a little lacking."

Rhydian sat, stretching his legs out to the side of the table happily. "It got old pretty fast, however good you think it is, anyhow. It's changed a little in the last few years, but not an awful lot." He took up the menu card, scanning it but leaving most of his attention for Lennox. "When did you start branching out, then? Or were your parents good about that sort of thing?"

"Hrm? Branching...." Lennox looked confused then shook his head when he got it. "Oh, no. Halfblood, but as much as we did when I was growing up I might has well have been muggleborn, so it comes more naturally. Your family does the same, right? From what your mum said, anyway?"

"Very much the same, yes." That was the most important litmus test to get out of the way, really. Rhydian smiled, clearly pleased. "I've always thought it would be hard not to, but Dad was a Squib - so I've had it easier than some, I guess. But we were celebrating, weren't we? What do you like for wine? I'm partial to the try-a-tiny-bit-of-everything approach." Or a not so tiny bit. But they could start with a flight, maybe.

From the sheer amount of bars and pubs that Fergus had asked about during the game, Lennox had the feeling that Rhydian wasn't all that much for restraint... or sobriety. But he also figured he ought to give him a chance to prove that wrong, so he shrugged slightly and then picked up the wine list. "I like whites... Reds go to my head too quickly." He actually preferred them more, really, but he didn't want to get drunk here.

Rhydian was fully prepared to prove himself capable of moderation. It was, as far as he was concerned, a first date. And he liked to think he knew how to impress on occasion. "I've always had a soft spot for Sancerre, actually. They've got a decent one." He wouldn't presume to order for him, but he set the menu down and crossed his arms over the table, decided. "Have you ever been? To France, I mean."

"A few times," Lennox nodded, "My brother dated a girl in Paris for a bit, and we traveled. I've trained at a few of the pitches there, during our off season. They're so close..." He scanned the list again, but then sat it down. "I'll trust your opinion on the Sancerre. Second glasses we can try something else."

"I love Paris. I've only ever been for a week combined, maybe, but - I don't know, it seems like there's always some great group of people shouting outside the Sorbonne. You don't get enough of that around here." He smiled, leaning back in his seat and casting an eye around for the waiter. "Excellent choice." And it seemed he hadn't scared the man off too badly, if they were already having a second glass.

Rhydian looked up at him again with an appreciative expression, not quite a smile, as he set his empty glass on the table. Most people, he thought, must understand - so many had done what he'd done, which might not have been good enough. But there was no use in dwelling on it. The silence hung for a moment too long before he straightened, raised his hand for a waiter, and set his elbows on the table, determined to press the conversation forward to something more lighthearted. "I studied religions for most of the time, actually." Well, a little more lighthearted. "Do you know, every single person in my seminar on the conversion of the Roman empire was an atheist? Sometimes you got the feeling it was all a little ... silly."

Talking about war to talking about religion didn't seem to be that much a step up, but it was a little better. Lennox drained his glass now that Rhydian was looking for the waiter. A second glass couldn't hurt.

"Well, someone has to explain away the things we can do, I suppose..."

"Well, no they don't. I think trying to make it all a logical thing is the wrong way to go about it, but that's just me. If you're going to go believing in a divine power, it shouldn't be because you've got to do it to make sense of things. There are so many better reasons." Luckily, the waiter stopped him before he launch into a full-on lecture, and he was forced to consult the menu again before glancing up at Lennox, clearly a little embarrassed, and give him a sheepish grin. "Red, do you think? Nothing too jammy?"

"Red goes straight to my head," he said, but then he thought about it for a moment and then shrugged permissively. One glass couldn't do that much damage, right?

"Red."

"Something light, then. We can manage that." He sent the waiter away with an order that would hopefully satisfy - not that he minded the thought of a slightly loopy Lennox, really - and fumbled around for a minute for a subject that his mother hadn't told him was bad form to discuss at the dinner table. "The only thing that stretches me out is whiskey, really. Unfortunately it's usually the celebration of choice in places where I end up on ... celebratory occasions." He had a lot of those.

It was a better subject than war, religion, or him, and so Lennox was more amenable to going along with the change. "Your friend Fergus seemed to indicate that you have quite few of those. I half thought you'd be falling over yourself when we met..."

"Well, I can't really blame you." It had been a long time since Rhydian had taken offense at being called a drunk, even though he didn't quite think it was true. "We do celebrate a lot. I don't know, I guess our idea of fun is a little ... rough, for some people." He tried to look serious. "But I don't spend every morning coming out of a coma and drinking raw eggs and pepper, if that's what you mean."

"Oh, that's very funny, yes," Rhydian said, turning his face away but unable to hide his growing smile now that his wineglass had been taken from him. "I'm going to have to have a talk with Fergus about the first impression he makes. I doubt he'll care a bit." It was all in good fun, though, he thought.

"No, he didn't seem the sort who would...." Lennox chuckled, and he took the moment to study Rhydian's face again. In profile, he was just as handsome. It suddenly made him wonder just how many people had played his sister's game...

"You've been friends with him long?" He asked, instead.

"A few years - we didn't really know one another at school, actually." He wasn't sure how much he wanted to tell Lennox about how he had met Fergus, but ... well, he could probably guess even without much of an explanation. "We found we had a common interest in not getting the stuffing kicked out of us in a pub fight. After I put him in his place a bit for making snide remarks, of course." Which was the opposite of what had happened, but Fergus would understand the necessity of flipping the story a little.

"Oh, of course..." Lennox laughed again, and he wasn't sure why it was that Rhydian's rough and tumble side was suddenly not as unappealing as it had seemed during the game. Probably, he thought, because Rhydian was certainly not unappealing just in and of himself. "Well, I'm sure he's useful, as a mate. He seems ready enough to take your side."
