West closed the journal after the last few comments with Astoria. Giving her away? West had never been so glad of Mr Greengrass's continued existence as he was right now. It was bad enough he was actually having to give her up - the dream of her, anyway - to Malfoy, doing the actual deed of giving her hand to him might have been the thing that actually did lead to a duel that West had felt was coming for years.

Now it wouldn't. He could stand in his place and flirt with cousins, could, maybe,finally see that Astoria belonged to Malfoy and get it through his head that she always would. A bloke could dream - but at some point he had to stop dreaming.

So, West touched the delicate chain of the necklace again, poured himself a glass of brandy, and waited for his brother.
