WHO: Gretchen Watkins & Delaney Twilfitt
WHAT: Delaney needs to talk. Gretchen happens to be nearby.
WHERE: Diagon
WHEN: Monday afternoon
WARNINGS/RATING/STATUS: None this time, I promise! Just talk of babies and emotions and girly shit like that/PG13?/Ongoing

Gretchen wasn't exactly sure how it'd come to pass that she was picking up lunch for Trevor, but sure enough, here she was, paying for two meals from the Happy Squid and taking them back to a likely ungrateful partner. Thanking man behind the counter, she snagged the bag of food and took an appreciative sniff as she walked outside, her stomach rumbling slightly.

She was hungrier than she'd thought, which sort of made sense, given that she'd foregone any sort of breakfast meal in favour of spending another hour in bed with Trevor. Not that it had been a bad trade off, mind. The fact remained, however, that this food was going to be greatly appreciated.

Strolling past Delaney's store, Gretchen glanced in idly, still slightly uncomfortable with the fact that both she and Trevor had slept with the woman, on completely separate occasions. She was certain it was a first, she didn't generally sleep with women and she would bet all her gold that Trevor had never shagged a bloke. Given her inclinations, a certain level of crossover was to be expected, but she still found it odd.

Oddness filling her head, Gretchen didn't see Delaney walking towards her until it was too late. The other woman had spotted her and Gretch raised a hand in greeting.

It had been a full twenty four hours since Delaney had received the news that she was pregnant, and she still wasn't sure how she felt about it, other than terror. She had no parents to talk to, and she had no intention of owling Nico at school to tell him - not yet anyway. She couldn't tell Maeve, because Maeve was already getting tired of her constant shenanigans and Delaney just knew that this would be the last straw.

Briefly she thought of telling Consuela, but in the end decided she couldn't. Consuela would just be too... happy.

Then there was the issue of the father. It could be any one of three men, and Delaney was well aware of how that reflected on her, personally. The idea of telling any of them before she was sure whose it was didn't sit well with her - though the idea of telling them all and watching them fight it out as to who wouldn't have to take responsibility for it, did make her smirk for a moment or two.

Well, at the very least, it was the baby to blame for her vomiting, and not the Squid place. The concept of apologizing for her slanderous remarks on the journals didn't occur to her, but she was suddenly in the mood for drowning her sorrows in a large plate of delicious, junky noodles and chicken.

Actually, scratch that. Perhaps it would be a better idea to ask for beef. She'd got around to reading the pamphlets and it seemed like chicken might not be a great idea unless she was cooking it for herself and knew damn well it was safe. Oh, Merlin, and she couldn't drink, either... if she ended up keeping this baby, there was no way she wanted it to turn out to be mentally retarded... the world had enough Weasleys...

As she was thinking all of this, she walked toward the restaurant and spotted Gretchen. The two of them had seemed to get along alright the one time they'd spent time together, and Delaney was sure that neither of them wanted a repeat of the truly miserable sex they'd shared. She was the closest thing she had to someone to confide in at the moment, at any rate. Friendly enough to talk to, but detached enough that it didn't matter so much if Gretchen had an unfavorable reaction. Delaney waved and walked up to her, doing her best to smile but only managing a weak sort of grimace.

"Hi," she said glumly. "Listen... I sort of... are you busy?"

She had to tell someone, before her head exploded. Looked like Gretchen was going to be it.

At Delaney's question, Gretchen shrugged and held up the bag of food. "I was just picking up lunch," she started, then shrugged again. Trevor could wait for his food, the lazy bum. "I've got a few minutes."

Although she didn't want to ask, she knew no good would come out of it, she'd only end up being dragged into a conversation about emotions or maybe the utter guilt Delaney felt about cheating on her girlfriend. Gretchen didn't want to hear excuses, nor did she even care. Relationships were most definitely out of her realm of experience and she didn't want to hear more about them.

Yet even so, she found her curiosity getting the better of her. "Why?"

Delaney was already questioning the wisdom of spilling the beans but she'd come so close she couldn't stop. She took a deep breath, plopped down on a conveniently placed bench and hid her face in her hands. "I'm pregnant."

There, she'd said it, for the first time out loud since leaving Anabel's office the day before. And she didn't even throw up this time. Perhaps she was getting used to the idea after all! Or, perhaps the anti nausea potions were just doing their job.

"I'm pregnant. I found out yesterday," she repeated, and held her breath, bracing herself for Gretch's reaction. She had no idea what to expect - she barely knew the other woman.

Gretchen had instinctively sat when Delaney did and instantly regretted it. What was it about her that invited people to confess that they were pregnant? Granted, the other person who'd done so had really been looking for Trevor, but she didn't think there was anything about her that screamed tell me about your reproductive plans.

"It's not mine," Gretchen quipped, shrugging. She waited a moment, then leaned back on the bench. "Do you need a potion or something? I've got some back at the house." Gretch was always extremely careful when she had sex with people, yet even she had had times where things had gotten out of hand and she hadn't been as wise as she should have been. Still, it was easily fixed, and she always made sure she had potions readily available.

It's not mine. Well, that was helpful. It wasn't Maeve's, either.

"No, no potions necessary. I went to a Healer, I have all the potions I need. I just… I just needed someone to talk to. And I guess I thought you and I got along okay."

Well, either Gretchen would laugh, get up and walk away, or else she would let Delaney spill.

"I didn't mean that type of potion," Gretchen responded, crossing her legs. "Surely you're not actually having it, are you?" She couldn't imagine having a child, even just the thought of being pregnant terrified her, let alone the possibility of carrying a child, then having to care for said burden? She didn't even like caring for Trevor, as little work as she put into that. She couldn't imagine having someone utterly dependant on her.

"Well… yes, I am having it," Delaney said slowly. "I'm not… I mean I can't…" Great, she sounded about as coherent as she had in the Healer's office.

"I mean I don't know if I'm keeping it or not, but I'm definitely going to have it." And that was for sure. She didn't know much but she knew that for sure. "I should probably tell the father, though, huh?"

Whoever he might be.

"Can't?" Gretchen arched an eyebrow. "Why not? If you can't have a kid, what's wrong with getting rid of it?" She shook her head. She knew there were people opposed to the idea of aborting a pregnancy but she didn't consider it anything bad or wrong. At this point, whatever was in Delaney wasn't a real human, not that she had any qualms with killing people in general; sometimes it was needed, and she definately considered pregnancy a needed occasion.

"Who's the father?" she found herself asking, although she didn't really care.

"Well, I suppose it's not so much can't as it is won't," Delaney clarified. "It might sound melodramatic but there's been enough death in my family to last a little while, I thought it would be nice to add a little more life."

That made it sound like she'd decided to keep it, she realized, and she pondered the thought. There was no way she was ready... but on the other hand, she'd had Nico for all these months and he'd turned out okay... but on the other other hand he hadn't been a baby when she'd got him...

"I... don't know," she said sheepishly.

"Melodramatic?" Gretchen deadpanned, staring across at the blonde. "That doesn't sound melodramatic at all." She managed to keep from rolling her eyes, a feat she was rather proud of, and jiggled her foot. Pregnant women made her uncomfortable. It wasn't as though pregnancy was contagious, but talk of babies made her want to run for the hills.

At Delaney's answer, she arched an unjudgemental eyebrow. "You don't?" she echoed. "How many possibilities are there?"

As much as the woman might have been trying not to sound bored and disinterested, she wasn't doing a very good job. Delaney winced a little.

"Three," she said after a pause. "I've been with three blokes in the time period in question."

Three.

Still, Gretchen couldn't judge. It'd be hypocritical of her and she may have been many things, but hypocritical was not one of them. "Are you going to tell them?" she asked, then before she could stop herself, more out of an innate need for information and less fuelled by a desire to actually know more about Delaney herself, continued: "Who?"

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]delaneytwilfitt
2010-09-07 01:03 am UTC (link)
Was she going to tell them? That was a good question, and yet another of the questions on Delaney's list of Questions She Didn't Know The Answer To.

"I don't know," she said weakly. "I mean... I'm still trying to wrap my own head around it. If I tell him... them... then I'm just going to have to deal with them... him... pressuring me to make up my mind. Like, about whether or not to get rid of it - I've already decided I won't, so if any of the three are pro-abortion, that's a can of worms I'm so not ready to open."

Pausing for breath, she plunged into her next rant, a little surprised at how good it felt to verbalize all her inner turmoil. "And then even if we get past that, there's the question of keeping the baby or adopting it out, and I haven't made my mind up, and I refuse to be pushed... plus I don't want to tell some bloke he's going to be a daddy, then nine months from now tell him, oh, no, I'm giving it away."

And the more she thought about it, the more the idea of collaborative parenting... irked her. If she did end up keeping this thing, she sure as hell wasn't going to give up autonomy in favor of having a man around all the time telling her what to do.

"If I tell you, I want you to promise you won't breathe a word to any of them until I'm ready to say something," she warned.

"In my experience," Gretchen leaned back on the bench and made herself comfortable. "Men generally don't want to be daddies." She shrugged and flashed a grin. "At least not those who are willing to sleep with women like us." She hadn't meant it self-depreciatingly, because she didn't self-depreciate. Gretchen loved herself, wholly, there was nothing wrong with the way she lived her life, nothing she regretted (except, perhaps, sitting down beside Delaney a few moments ago) and nothing she'd do over again. Women like her were smart and capable, women who didn't need a man to do anything and definitely didn't need children to hold them back. Come to think of it, Gretchen never had met another woman like herself.

At Delaney's request, she shrugged. "I can keep a secret."

"I can't say I disagree," Delaney said wryly. "I haven't come across a man yet who wasn't repulsed by the idea of marriage and babies - in fact, I've used that trick a number of times to fend off unwanted advances. But... you never know, you know? It's one thing to hate the idea in abstract. I know I certainly did. But when confronted with the reality of actually being a father... who knows what they might do?"

She leaned back and sighed. "Well, if you're sure... Caine Warrington, Marcus Flint, and Trevor Scabior."

As Delaney listed the potential fathers, Gretchen barely had time to react to Caine's name before Trev was mentioned and Gretchen choked, letting out a little, involuntary gasp and staring across the bench. She'd known that Trevor had shagged Delaney, but now he was being listed as a potential father?! Hadn't she taught him better than that?

[info]delaneytwilfitt

Gretchen hadn't reacted well to her list of potential fathers and, blushing again, Delaney buried her face in her hands.

"I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that I'm pregnant," she mumbled. "I mean... I've been sleeping around since I was fifteen, and I've been pretty good about getting checked for disease - I am, and always have been clean, just for the record - but I suppose I was too arrogant to think that an unplanned pregnancy could happen to me," she went on. It hadn't escaped her that "unplanned" was the word she had chosen, rather than "unwanted".

"So... what would you do, if you were me? And if abortion wasn't an option, because as far as I'm concerned, it isn't."

[info]swashbuckley

It took Gretchen a long moment to be able to focus on Delaney's words, but with monumental effort, she managed to pull herself back. "Abortion is really the only option, 'sfar as I'm concerned." she responded, clutching and unclutching the bag containing her and Trevor's lunch.

"Since you seem to have made up your mind to actually have the sprog, you've either got to raise it yourself or with someone." She sucked in a breath, wondering how quickly she could get away and back to the office. "Tell the father, he was fucking stupid enough to not use protection, so he's got to deal with it now."

She hesitated for a moment, then barrelled on, unable to stop herself from asking: "Scabior... are you sure?"

It took everything Delaney had not to roll her eyes at Gretchen. She got it, Gretchen would abort. That was well and good, but Gretchen wasn't the one who was knocked up. It was time to focus on Delaney.

"On that, at least, you're probably right," she mused. "Do you think I should owl each of them, letting them know there's a possibility they're the father? Or should I try to find out which one it is before letting anyone know anything?"

Gretchen didn't seem to be able to get past Trev. "Trevor Scabior," she enunciated clearly. "Blonde, cute, bit of an arsehole when he opens his mouth but you can forgive that when you see the size of his dick?"

"How're you going to figure out which one it is without letting them all know?" Gretchen asked, trying to force her mind away from the fact that Trevor might be a father.

At Delaney's description of Trev, Gretchen grinned slightly. That was one of the most apt descriptions of her partner she'd ever heard. "I... know him," she explained, itching to leave Delaney.

That was another good question. "I hadn't really thought about it, but i suppose I assumed the Healer would be able to tell me at some stage," she said quietly. "I mean, surely to Merlin I'm not the only woman this has ever happened to, and bloody stinking filthy muggles have ways to find out the paternity of a baby, so I can't see any reason why we shouldn't have something ten times better and less invasive."

Watching the small grin appear on Gretchen's face, Delaney couldn't help but grin back a little. "His dick is a bit lovely, isn't it?" she smirked.

"I'm no healer," Gretchen started, shaking her head. "I'd imagine they have to have some sort of sample to compare the result to though."

Delaney's smirk caused a wave of possessiveness to flash through Gretchen and she was torn between agreeing and giving into the urge to slap the smirk off of Delaney's face. "I... have to go," she managed, abruptly, holding the bag of food up as an explanation.

"If you need a healer, I've got one who can be trusted." She wasn't sure why she was offering, except for the remote possibility that this was Trevor's sprog, in which case, she needed to be assured that it would be taken care of, regardless of Delaney's feelings.

"Hmm." Delaney pondered that for a moment before realizing it made sense. Even magic couldn't conjure something out of nothing.

It seemed like the conversation was over, though, and she stood up, indicating the restaurant with her chin. "Yes, I was about to head in there myself," she said. "I wanted to thank you for introducing me to it, the food is delicious, and now that I know what it was that made me sick, I feel a lot better about eating from there."

The offer made her frown. "I've got a healer, but thank you anyway," she said cautiously.

Flapping her hand at Delaney, Gretchen didn't even take the time to walk the short distance back to the office, merely spinning in place and apparating.

Thankfully Trevor was alone when she got back and she wandlessly locked the door, dropping the bag of food to the desk in front of him. "Trevor." she ground out, her mind whirling.

"You," Gretchen jammed her hands on her hips and stared down at him. "Are going to be a fucking father." All their power, all their wealth, now had the potential to be ruined by some stupid blonde slag.

Staring after his partner as she stalked away, all he could was stare with a dumbstruck, slightly wide-eyed expression as his mind starting whirling. He took precautions, he knew Gretch took precautions, and children were the last thing either of them wanted to deal with...

His foot fell off the desk, landing with a thud on the hard wood floor and pulled him back into an upright position. "You're pregnant?" he said, practically sputtering with shock.

She sputtered for a moment then, shook her head. "Not to mention, I'm not ridiculous enough to not have dealt with it already!" She waved her arm in the general direction of Delaney's shop. "Not me, you great pillock. That blonde bint you shagged."

"What! You said father!" He accused back, agitated that she was getting upset with him when she was the one making such horrible accusations. He popped out of his chair and grabbed the drink from his desk, taking a swig before he gestured with it.

"I didn't think so but-" Mid wave he stopped talking, his head turning to follow her gesture. Blond bint... His expression glazed over slightly as he tried to wade through a headful of shock and panic to reconcile what she was going on about. "Twillfit? She's pregnant?" Temporarily distracted, Trevor considered the news until he noticed the way Gretchen was staring at him and waved his hands, eyes bugging slightly again. "Well it's not fuckin' mine!!"

Trevor scowled as she stole his liquor but kept silent on the matter, shoving the glass back at her. Instead he just pulled the whisky out of the drawer and tossed the cork on the desk, opting to drink from the source. "I do use protection!" He protested, amazed he even had to argue this. He was fairly certain at this point he was about as fertile as a mule with the potions he took.

"She's a twit," he shot back, swigging from the bottle, debating whether he should go deal with Delaney in person and set her straight or let her rule him out on her own.

All she'd wanted was lunch. A nice, noodle-y lunch and maybe a quick shag, and instead she got landed into the middle of domestic drama. "Yeah, I said one of, but I don't give a shit about whether Warrington's got a bastard on his hands, I care about you."

It's not fuckin' mine!" He repeated, voice rising a little more as he swung the bottle about emphatically. "The last thing I need is some fucking drama like this gettin' in the way of things." He caught the bit about Warrington and wondered just how many other of his cohorts Delaney was shagging.

He sipped the bottle again, folding his arms across his chest petulantly. "Aw. You care. Bloody great and all, Gretch, but there's no way that thing is mine, is there? Salazar!! A lil' credit is due, don't you think?"

He glanced back at her, noting her uncomfortable position and decided against taking the bottle back at that moment. "It's not bad," he pointed out, taking this as another of Gretchen's overreacting moments. He could still remember when she thought Verity would be trouble, a blond even less threatening than Twillfit. "Best cock of all the ones I've fucked." The comment didn't come out as sarcastic as she'd intended it to, in fact it had sounded downright complimentary and sincere. She added an eye roll, hoping it would cover tat fact and took another swig from the bottle, slamming it on the table.

She folded her arms across her chest, feeling petulant, but knowing she was right. "Yes! I talked to her! I didn't realise that you might've knocked her up because I told her to go after the bastard and make him pay for it!"

"Maybe not," Trev conceeded, although he didn't feel all that really negated the possibility. "But I can fucking 'andle 'er at least. She runs a fucking clothing store, for Salazar's sake!" He leaned against the desk sulkily. "I'm intimidating," he insisted, slightly perturbed that Gretchen didn't seem to agree he could intimidate someone into backing down and would have to resort to killing.

"You don't intimidate me," Gretchen responded, although there were times he did. She was well aware that just because they slept together and had this odd friendship that Trevor wouldn't hesitate to punish her if the need arose. Even if she thought she could get away with it, she wouldn't push him, she didn't think he'd have any qualms with killing her for the right reason.

She sighed and nabbed the bottle from the table to take another swig before replacing it and draping her arm over her eyes. "This is why you should only sleep with me. I'm not stupid enough to let myself get knocked up."

"Uh huh," Trevor eyed Gretchen doubtfully, taking the bottle back for another sip. He'd Gretch for a long time now and they'd been through more together than anyone else. He didn't for one moment believe she'd underestimate him like that, others might, but she was more aware than that.

"It's stupid," he agreed, shaking his head at Delaney's situation. "'Ow fucking 'ard is it to take a damn potion?"

"I could kick your arse," Gretchen said after a moment, leaning back in the chair and slowly spinning it around so she could put her feet up on the desk. Knocking back the whiskey like she had done was a bad idea on an empty stomach. She hadn't quite reached a level of drunkenness where it'd be better for her to go home and sleep it off, but now that her rage was dissipating, another shot or two would probably send her that way. "Not now, cos I'm a little drunk, but another time. Any other time."

Sighing, Gretchen scrubbed her hand through her hair. "I have no idea. And after all the complaining she did about her brother? He was practically fully grown, too!" Shrugging, she rolled her head to the side and stared up at Trevor for a moment. "Why the hell did you shag her anyway? Was I busy or something?"

"In your dreams," Trev rolled his eyes and took one more swig from the bottle before he recapped it, looking around unsteadily before he noticed the bag beside him and remembered why Gretch had gone out in the first place.

Digging out two take away containers, Trev grabbed a fork and started wolfing down his noodles. "You were...I don't know, do I? Doing something. Away," he gestured vaguely, his words muffled by the mouthful of food. "And she's easy, " he explained with a shrug. "Not complicated. Wasn't, anyway."

Shaking her fist less than threateningly, Gretchen disagreed out loud, although in actuality she wouldn't want to be in any sort of situation where she was truly squared off against Trevor, because she was pretty sure she wouldn't be the one to walk away from it. "Any. Time."

The rustling of the takeaway bag perked Gretchen up and she dropped her feet to the ground, scooting closer to the desk and nabbing a pair of chopsticks. "You don't think she's gonna try and come after our gold?" she asked, dubiously, through a mouthful of noodles.

"Maybe," Trev said, shoveling another bite into his mouth as soon as he'd swallowed the first. "She's got 'er own, even she's not that bloody stupid, don't know if she even knows 'ow much we 'ave..." he ticked off the variety of reasons that supported his doubt she'd be a real worry. "Well, and there's the it's not bloody mine part."
