Who: Niki Urquhart and Maisie Cattermole.
When: August 30th. Late afternoon.
Where: Memorial Alley.
What: Niki runs into 'Elbert's' sister.
Rating: Low.
Status: Complete/Closed.

As he stepped out of Sugarush, Niki furrowed his brow as he opened his box of Bertie Bott's Every Flavoured Jelly Beans. He hadn't bothered with a bag or anything else, wanting to dig into the sweet (and sometimes not sweet at all) treats. He loved the variety, the gross flavours as much as the good ones. Well he didn't like the gross flavours, exactly. But he liked the surprise of them. And, well, a few he liked. Like Ink, for some reason. And there was something surprisingly refreshing about a soap flavoured jelly bean.

He tucked his fingers into the box as he started to walk down the street, trying to dig out a Cough Medicine flavoured one. Although they were a bit hard to tell apaert from Grape, which was the first purpley one that he popped into his mouth.

He was very intent on finding that elusive bean that he wasn't looking where he was going at all as he walked along. And so there was no surprise when he collided with someone coming from the other direction.

"Hey!" he exclaimed, looking at the girl as he fumbled to keep from dropping his treats, the jelly beans rattling around in the box like a rainbow shaker. "No getting away from me," he informed the candy once he had a good hold on them.

After visiting her father for a bit of a chat, Maisie wandered around Memorial Alley, not really sure where exactly she planned on going. There was anywhere there or Diagon, and sense she'd gotten out of work a bit early (rather...she was forced to leave because she'd been working too much overtime.) She had no where to return to other than her flat, and not a great deal of things to entertain her there, so she didn't see the point in turning in for the evening.

What she didn't plan on was getting so lost in her thoughts that she ran into someone, or rather, he ran into her. Perhaps it was both of their faults. She was told she'd run into someone before like this and it had ended in a disaster of sorts, but a forgetfulness potion quite remedied the memory of that embarrassing incident.

She began to apologize, but the lad she'd run into seemed rather into talking to his candy. She quirked an eyebrow, and adjusted the strap of the bag she had slung over her shoulder, "Sorry about that," she gave a bit of a sigh, ruffling her long hair with her hand, "I think you got them all though, which is good. It'd be a shame to lose them."

Niki finally looked up at her properly, once he was sure that he had the jelly beans well under control, and that they weren't going to go hoping and skipping all over the place. Which would be a crying shame. Except for the Pear ones. They could all go away and he'd be quite fine with that!

"I think so," he agreed with a little nod of his head, and a skewed, crooked grin.

And then, quite randomly, added, "Don't you think there should be a Blood flavoured jelly bean?" he looked at her rather expectantly, as if she would hold all the answers to his question. "Which one is your favourite?" She looked vaguely familiar to him, and he was trying to figure that out.

For some reason, Maisie got the sneaking suspicion that she'd seen him somewhere before, but she couldn't quite place where. He seemed nice enough, but perhaps a bit...well, odd. Still, she wasn't one to judge on first appearances.

"Blood flavoured? Wouldn't that taste a bit like the iron one?" She was pretty sure that everyone knew what blood tasted like, and she thought that it tasted that way from the iron in it. It kind of grossed her out, but then, she supposed that would make a good Bertie Botts. A lot of them were absolutely horrid.

"Favourite? Well, of the normal ones it'd have to be chocolate. I'm a wee bit of a chocoholic. Otherwise, I'm pretty fond of pear and menthol."

"Maybe," Niki replied with a little shrug of his shoulders. "But. Blood lollipops. Don't taste like iron ones. Not exactly. So maybe not." It was an odd acquired taste, but he was quite partial to Blood Lollipops.

"Pear. They're not good," he gave a little shake of his head at that. "They taste too.. peary." Shocking, that. He winkled his nose, for a moment, before he peered into the box again, shaking it around, and watching the rainbow of beans shift.

"Do you want one?" he offered out then, holding the box out to her.

She noted the way that he spoke, the way he paused a bit. No one that she remembered really talked like that. Maybe she didn't know him, but there was just something she couldn't put her finger on that was familiar, "Perhaps," she assented, although, she'd never had a blood flavored lollipop before. They never really appealed.

"I think that's why I like them," she said with a little bit of a laugh, looking a bit shocked when he offered, but not wanting to be rude by turning him down, "Um...sure, why not?" she said, reaching in and grabbing one at random, coming up with one that actually kind of looked like a pear one...perhaps marmalade. No, definitely pear. It was rather a coincidence.

"Thanks," she said, "Do I know you from somewhere? School, maybe?"

Niki dug his fingers into the box after her and pulled out a black one that he thought might be licorice, but turned out to be petrol. He made a rather considering face as he chewed it, and decided it wasn't his favourite, at all.

"I went to Hogwarts," he said. "You went to Hogwarts." He scrutinized her for another moment and then realized who she was (she thought).

"Oh. I know." She hadn't been in his year, but a year below, Niki thought. "You're Elbert's sister." Because Ellie would always be Elbert in his mind.

At the sudden declaration that she had a sibling named Elbert, Maisie quirked a bit of a confused face, "I don't have anyone in my family named Elbert," she said, though the name was ringing a bell...wait. This was him. This was the one that wouldn't leave Ellie alone about her name!

"Wait, do you mean Ellie? Because she's my sister. That makes you Niki, right?" No wonder she had thought something was off.

If she remembered right, something had happened to him in the final battle. The Niki she remembered had always been hanging around with his cousin Braxton up until he left school, then he was still just...another Slytherin. She never thought she'd be discussing Bertie Bott's beans with him.

"Yes you do," Niki said, quite sure on that fact. Of course, if he didn't believe Ellie when she told him what her name was (and was not), he probably was going to have a difficult time believing her sister!

He grinned then, his crooked, skewed little grin when she said his name, and the former Slytherin get a quick nod of his head. "I am. Yeah," he agreed.

He was definitely a far cry from the Niki he had been during school. No longer clean cut, no longer smartly dressed. Now scruffy and tattooed. Now with more than a few screws loose. "She recognizes us," he said to the nothingness.

"And you're..." He tried to fill in the blank of her name. Or to let her do the filling!

"Elbert is not Ellie's name, though! It's Eleanor," Even as she said it, she thought that it was a waste of her breath. If he hadn't been convinced thus far, then it was unlikely that he would be swayed now.

The 'us' caught her a bit off guard, but she reminded herself that...well, Niki wasn't exactly known for his sanity now a days. She hadn't paid much attention to her journal as of late, but she had seen some rather interesting ramblings.

"Maisie. My name is Maisie," she said, thankful that she didn't have a longer version of the name. Of course, she still feared being called something absolutely ridiculous by the time she left.

"So she says,," Nikolai nodded his head a little bit. His eyes narrowed, just a tiny amount. "But she could just be saying that. To cover up. The fact that her name's Elbert. And you. You're her sister. So you'd cover up too." Perfect sense! In a nonsensical sort of way.

"Maisie," he echoed, bobbing his head, and deciding that that was probably her name. "I've always thought. That Maisie would be a good name for a cow. Don't you think?" It wasn't said in a rude manner, or meant to be insulting. It was all just very conversational.

And then he held out the box of Bertie Bott's again, so she could take another.

"I swear, she's not just saying it. She hates admitting it though. Eleanor is such an old fashioned name," she said, making her own logical sense that actually sounded a right bit better than his, she thought. Because their mother never would have named her daughter Elbert. Although, given another boy, it might have been possible.

"Um...it could be, I guess?" She didn't really take offense. Who would, from someone who obviously had a few marbles loose up in there somewhere? Well, apparently her sister had, to make him take Elbert to heart so much.

She grabbed into the box and pulled out a vicious looking red one that turned out to be cinnamon. Not too bad, but a bit hot! Part of her wanted to say something and take her leave...it wasn't that she feared Niki or anything, but she...well, she was afraid she was going to say something wrong, "Have you been well, since school?"

"So's Elbert," Niki pointed out, incase she thought she was going to get away with using 'old fashioned' for an arguement! Ooh, he was on to her! "They probably. Meant to give the boy name to the boy her. Does he have a girl name?" That would make sense! In a way that made no sense at all.

"Or. A lamb. Or a goat." It definitely seemed like a farm name to Niki. Not that he knew much about farms, except from books. He had been raised in the posh Pureblood manner (you wouldn't guess it from how he was now). Definitely no farming involved!

He popped another one into his mouth, which puckered right up. Cherry Tart! And ooh it was tart! He flickered his tongue in and out like a snake to chase the flavour away. "I've been. Okay." He didn't really seem to mind his oddness. "How are you?" He sounded very nearly polite!

"No, my brother's name is Alfred...but everyone calls him Alfie!" she quickly amended her little slip. She just should have stuck with Alfie. She hoped that she hadn't somehow given both of her siblings awkward nicknames when it came to this odd Slytherin boy.

"Or perfectly average teenage girls," she input just for the hell of it. Getting annoyed at it wasn't going to do her any good, but really? All of those animals. It wasn't exactly flattering. She was beginning to curse her mother and father's naming abilities, or lack thereof.

She watched him, almost amused at the face he made, "I've been very well, thank you," she looked at her watch for a moment, an unsettling feeling in the pit of her stomach. She actually wished that they were asking her to go in to work, rather than telling her to stay away. She didn't need time off right now. She needed something to do! Preferably with someone she knew a little better than Niki Urquhart. But most everyone was at the World Cup that day... "Sorry, Niki, it's been a lovely chat, but I've got to get going."

"Well that's not a girl's name." Niki looked rather puzzled at this, because it ruined his theory! Still, he wouldn't be letting go of the name 'Elbert' anytime soon! He was rather attached to it now.

"Yes. Yes, it could work for girls too," he decided. Which was fortunate, since she was a girl and all. Of the human-witch variety and not the farm animal variety!

He swayed a little bit on his feet and his eyes widened in surprise when she said it had been lovely to chat. "Really?" he asked curiously. He didn't often get 'lovely' as an adjective that accompanied him in any way. That odd little grin returned. "Yes. Yes it has. Okay. Okay. Goodbye, Maisie."
