Who: Zacharias Smith and Draco Malfoy.
When: August 24th. 3pm.
Where: Diamond.
What: Discussing Theodore.
Rating: Low.
Status: Complete/Closed.

During their school days, Zacharias and Draco hadn't exactly been friends. Oh they knew each other, as their families ran in the same circles. But their Houses made them clash - as did their personalities. However, after school, after the War - after so many things (and maybe a little bit of growing up as well) they settled into a friendship.

And if anyone knew about Theodore, it was Draco. Zacharias was quite concerned for his friend, who looked so small and skinny and vulnerable - and lost. And so he and Draco were meeting to discuss Theodore, and his release, and why he would be staying with Goyle of all people. Zacharias's memories of Goyle and Crabbe were of two hulking clods who tapped into Draco's brain due to the lack of their own. However Draco had alluded to the fact there was more to Goyle now.

He arrived at Diamond just a few minutes before three, sweeping into the elite bar. He had no problem getting in, of course, and had been there several times before. He requested a private room and told them to guide Draco Malfoy there when he arrived.

He did not need to describe or explain who Draco was. Oh course.

Ordering a glass of firewhiskey, he slid into a seat and sipped the smoking drink as he waited.

Draco had had to find the blasted ring to let himself into Diamond. It wasn't that he didn't covet it and keep it safe enough, Diamond was prestigious and important for that reason alone, not to mention the socializing that could be done there, but he didn't frequent the place the way some others did, and he didn't wear the damned ring when he wasn't planning on stopping in.

Still, he arrived on time, and a few minutes later the attendant was leaving him at the door to the private room where he assumed Smith was. He knocked once, curtly, then opened it - glass of brandy already in his hand.

Zacharias had been sipping at his Firewhiskey as he waited. Licks of hot smoke and alcohol slipped down his throat, creating that pleasant burn that he was well used to by now - oh, he didn't choke on it, not like he did the first time he snuck some when he was much younger.

At the knock, his gaze flickered up, and he watched as the door opened, and Draco entered. Zacharias dipped his head in a nod of greeting. "Hello, Draco," he said, rising to his feet to offer his hand to shake in an amicable and polite manner. Returning to his seat only when the handshake was finished.

"How are you?"

Draco was always a bit annoyed still when people didn't leap to their feet in deference, but he'd grown used to not showing it. He shook Smith's hand, and wondered when he'd started actually looking forward to conversations with the former Hufflepuff. Certainly sometime far after school.

"Smith," he said, by way of greeting, and didn't answer until he sat down across from him. "I'm well. Avoiding wedding plans quite successfully. You?"

It had definitely happened after school, because they had not exactly been friendly during. Polite, when the parental types were around, perhaps, at social engagements during summer and holidays. But not friends. However people changed and matured and perhaps the same could be said for them.

"Spending my time watching the World Cup and waiting for the season to start up again." He meant the Quidditch season, naturally. He was itching to get back into things. Although he practiced solo, and sometimes with mates from the team, it wasn't the same at all. "How is Astoria?"

"She's thrilled to be planning our wedding," Draco said, as if that were an answer as to how she was. It was certainly the answer to how, by all rights and social requirements, she ought to be. And this was the type of place where you mentioned that first.

"And quitting her job, finally," he added with a somewhat victorious smirk, the word 'job' getting all the disdain it deserved.

"No doubt," Zacharias said with a chuckle. "Women do seem to become thrilled with such things." He didn't see why, but then he was a man and not particularly interested with frills and flowers and what not.

That was good news, he thought, that she was quitting her job. "Oh, very good. I could never quite understand why she chose to work - especially at such a job." He understood that some women wanted to work, and that was fine, but there were good jobs and ... less suitable ones. Not that most women wanted to hear that!

"I imagine that she'll have her hands full with you anyway. You must be a full time job," he said, joking.

Draco's lips drew into a tight line, though. He did not joke about what he or Astoria were to each other, and he didn't like it when others did - even if the joke was offhand and mostly at his expense. He also didn't like people implying things that seemed, remotely, vulgar. Unless he was the one doing it.

Honestly, he was a little touchy on the subject.

"Yes, well." He said, effectively ending that conversation and taking a drink of his brandy.

"You wanted to talk about Nott?"

Zacharias was fine to let the topic slide away. Really it was just a habit of good manners, to inquire about one's significant other and all that - but it wasn't the reason they had come to meet.

That reason was Theodore.

"Yes, I did. I'm gathering from what you said that you're rather involved in his care. Or will be." As he was having Theodore removed from St. Mungo's - and quite right to do so. "And you were going to explain about Goyle."

"Involved...." Draco trailed the word out with a tight sort of shrug. "You were at the engagement party? When Astoria and I announced the charity foundation we've formed?" He knew Smith had been there, mentioning it was just a formality.

"The charity has taken legal control of Nott's care."

"Yes," Zacharias replied with a nod of his head. The party had been lovely - of course - and the announcement of the charity quite a kind and generous thing.

"I see." That made sense. From what he recalled, Theodore's father was dead now, and he had no other family left. "So you're able to have him removed from St. Mungo's. Good. That is good." That visit with Theo had left him with a sour feeling. He didn't see how anyone could get better there, let alone someone as lost and vulnerable as Nott was.

"So he'll be living at the school in the Caretaker's Cottage. With Goyle." Draco had told him that already... he just still found it slightly odd.

"Snape has agreed to keep an eye on him there as well," Draco said with another shrug. To be honest, Snape hadn't said it with quite that intent, but he knew that to keep things peaceful Snape would necessarily have to keep apprised of things.

"Yes, Goyle." Draco drained his glass and then cleared his throat. "They were, apparently, in love. Before." And the way he said that sounded nearly as filled with distaste as he'd been when he spoke of Astoria's job.

"That's good." Zacharias had never thought much of Snape - he hadn't been one of the favoured students after all, and those seemed to be the only ones who had liked him. But he thought he was probably safe in this case.

Blue eyes blinked, his surprise evident. "In love? Goyle and Theodore?" Zacharias was a bit thrown by that bit of news. Although it did shed some light on why Goyle was being chosen as his primary care person.

"That... must have been who he was speaking of," he murmured. Theodore had spoke words about a person who sounded like a lover. Of course with no name. "Well. I suppose that makes things a bit more understandable." And yet still odd, but in an entirely different way. What a strange pairing that was!

"Does it?" Draco looked a bit disgusted with the idea, himself, but not so much that he was rethinking the plan. Goyle would look after Theodore, and Draco could, perhaps, stop feeling so damnably guilty - he knew, only he knew, that what had happened to Theodore was, at least in part, his fault.

"Well, in a way, yes," Zacharias said with a nod of his head. "Theodore is obviously needs to be in the company of someone he trusts and feels comfortable with, yes?" And presumably a lover would be someone he would trust.

"Whatever the case, I think that getting him out of that place is the most important step."

Draco was tempted to reply sarcastically, thanking Smith for his informed opinion. Stepping in to make it seem as if he had had the idea. Reining himself in, he only nodded, rolling his empty glass between his long fingers. "It has taken several weeks to get the paperwork in order for the Ministry, but in the guise of 'carrying for victims of the war', they weren't tempted to argue the points too finely."

"Well you've been smart to do so," Zacharias said, and he was complimenting Draco. He respected the fact that Draco had had the foresight to do something, to set this all in motions.

"It's awful, seeing him like that," he admitted, shaking his head a little bit. He had realized that Theodore was in St. Mungo's of course... but to actually see him as he was, that was sad.

Draco nodded. He'd told Smith he tried to come in every few weeks, What he hadn't said, what only the attendants at the hospital knew, was that he had been doing so for as long as Nott had been a patient there.

"He injures himself, more often than not. He can be quite ... jumpy. I doubt many of his injures from the staff have been on purpose, but I still have them fired."

"I can see how he would. He was quite erratic when I visited him," Zacharias murmured. Calm one moment and then raging and pacing the next. "Though I can see how one without patience might strike him." If Theodore threw something or did something startling or odd.

"This... could be good for him? He could be taken for walks. Maybe even see the thestrals again." As he kept walking about them. And the school had some, didn't it? Or access to them at least.

He abandoned his drink then, leaning forward a bit. "I know you have this well in control, and have Goyle and Snape as well. But if there's anything I can do, do let me know."

"Yes, well, patience ought to be a bit part in their job descriptions, at least." Though Draco had the sinking suspicion that most orderlies and mediwizards were squibs and Hufflepuffs.

"It should be better for him than Mungo's, at least. I don't suspect he'll need much more looking after than those two would provide." And for the life of him, Draco had no idea what help Smith could offer.

"No, likely not," Zacharias agreed. Theodore would be in good hands. "But nonetheless, the offer stands." Incase something was ever required.

He remembered his drink and took the last swallow, leaving only the residue slipping down the sides of the glass to pool in the bottom. "Well, I appreciate being filled in. Once he's settled, I plan to visit him again. When is convenient for Goyle." Since it was his home and all. Zacharias rose to his feet.

"And I am sure we'll cross paths soon enough." That was what came of running in similar social circles.

"You'll need Snape's permission to be on the grounds," Draco pointed out. The protections at Hogwarts were one of the reasons he was glad he'd been allowed to stick Nott there rather than somewhere more public, in case there was some outcry.

Draco watched Smith rise, and looked at his own empty glass before sighing distractedly and standing too. "I'm sure," he said, not really indicating that he was looking forward, or not, to the eventuality.

"I'll contact him as well, then," Zacharias said with a nod of his head. He would do things by the book. Because Nott's security and safety was a concern to him as well.

Amusement tickled the corners of his mouth before he bid Draco goodbye and slipped from the room to depart the exclusive club.
