Who: Hermione and Ron
What: Celebrating Harry's Birthday
When: The 31st, after work
Where: Ron's flat
Rating/Warning: TBA

Hermione hadn't been able to focus at work - generally she was able to take the 31st of July off, but that hadn't happened this year and so she'd spent the the day avoiding nearly everyone (people kept talking about him as if they'd known him!) and left, remarkably, even a bit early after she'd cleared it with her supervisor. It was one of the perks of being higher up in the department, at least.

But then there was the question of what to do with the night. She thought of going by the grave, but she was sure other Order members would be hovering around it and she'd never liked the place, anyway, hated to think of him there. She thought of going by the statue in Memorial Park, but then thought that considering the day it was probably the biggest tourist attraction in Wizarding Britain at the moment, and there were so many tourists in the area for the Quidditch World Cup that she didn't want to see it swamped.

Finally, she settled on going her flat to pick a few things up, and then to the one place she knew she'd end up tonight. Apparating in, and a few moments later knocking on Ron's door with a bottle of firewhiskey in her free hand and a bag for the morning slung over her shoulder.

Maybe they were like this every year - thinking back over the last five, Hermione couldn't think of this night in that many years that she'd spent without Ron, really. Not entirely. She barely heard the door close behind them, because Ron had her in his arms and she melted against him, all pain and stressed frustration from the day still there, but quieter, and perhaps sharper - which might have been why her mouth found his so very, very fast. Without even saying hello to him, really. She thought the actions could speak for themselves.

It was a strange mix of relief and pain that went through him when he felt Hermione softening against him, one that was at least passing familiar by now - the feeling he got when he knew he shouldn't have been glad that he shared something this awful with her. But ... he was glad, very glad, that she was here with him. He shut his eyes and just kissed her, pushing one hand carefully up into her hair and making a blind attempt at setting the bottle on the hall table. That could wait a minute. Maybe a few minutes. It might not hurt to forget for a while, later.

Hermione let go of the bottle when she was almost sure, without looking, that Ron had it in his hand. She heard him sit it down, but by that time her arms were would around his neck and she pressed closer to him - he seemed, in times like this, so much larger and more solid than anything else she knew.

After a minute he broke away from her lips, his breath coming a little too fast, but kept her tightly in his grip. It was so important, now, to know that there was someone he could hold and who wouldn't go away; it helped to dull the other loss a little. He stroked at the line of her jaw with his thumb. "Hello," he murmured.

"I suppose so," She answered, turning toward his touch like a cat and then almost laughing. She preferred the other hello, really. "How was your day," she said, pretending for some normalcy while her hands sliding down over his shoulders, landing on the buttons at the collar of his shirt.

"Rubbish, of course." He let his hand rest at the side of her neck. He was probably being rude and stupid, standing in the entryway like this without so much as offering a chair, but he didn't think she minded. ... Or that she wanted to sit down, really. "How about yours?" Maybe they wouldn't have to talk about it at all. His fingers dipped beneath the fabric of her shirt, winding gently into her hair at the back of her neck.

"The same," she answered, which was vague and not an answer at all, but she knew, too, that neither of them really wanted to talk about anything that had happened today. Instead she leaned a little closer in to him as his fingers slid into her hair, sighing against his chest and then stretching up - he was so tall - to kiss him again.

"Mm. Good," he muttered absently, happy to leave the conversation behind - he couldn't have contributed much, and certainly nothing uplifting. The only thing that really came to mind was come sit down, but those words never left his mouth; instead he just tried to guide her down onto the sofa without breaking away from her. The way she was pressed up against him was ... well, the first thing all day that he hadn't wanted to stop.

Hermione was a little surprised at his turning her to the sofa, but she let him - it crossed her mind that, maybe for the first time in a while, she'd have rather just gone to the bedroom - but she sat when her legs it the cushions, and as she sat she pulled him down with him, not quite willing to stop kissing him yet.

Stopping was one of the last things on Ron's mind. There was a lot waiting for them after this that he didn't really want to sort out at the moment, and as appealing as that bottle was, pouring out drinks made for a lot of time to sit and talk or sit and not-talk, and ... this was infinitely preferable.

Not that it wasn't fantastic for its own sake, of course. He pulled her close when he sat beside her, tugging a little to try to coax her into his lap.

For once, she didn't really have to be coaxed. She moved into his lap pretty easily, bumping her head against his once accidentally but then making up for it by sliding her arms around his neck, fingers sliding into his hair as she kissed him again, sucked at his lower lip when she had to breathe instead.

"Ron," She said, and it sounded... well, it sounded breathless and throaty, and just a little bossy.

He tilted his head to the side when she ran into it; his laugh was mostly muffled shortly after, which was probably a good thing. He let his hands rest at her waist, ran them up to the middle of her back and kissed her more deeply.

"What?" he murmured against the corner of her mouth, raising his eyebrows a little in his usual who, me? expression. One of his arms snaked beneath her legs, as though he were about to pick her up. If he was going to be bossed around, he could have his fun with it first.

Hermione saw that he was teasing, though, and she smirked a little in answer, giving a one shouldered sort of shrug that seemed tense and coiled somehow. "Nothing," she said, that same tone to her voice. "I suppose we could just have a good talk."

"Can we not?" Ron leaned forward slightly to kiss her again, taking a moment to secure his arm behind her back. "I mean - not that I don't love talking with you -" He stood suddenly, hoisting her up and holding her against his chest, only staggering a little as he half-tripped against the coffee table he'd forgotten to account for on his way across the living room. "But I've sort of been talking at people all day. You know - get the hell away from my desk, sodd off, I'm going home so do it your damned self, that sort of thing."

"I added in a few you really aren't saying that you're too stupid to do this on your own, are you for good measure, but I think I can match your day...." Hermione laughed a little as he walked with her in his arms. It was...strange, letting him carry her. She sometimes forgot just how strong he was.

"Yeah, you can afford to call people stupid," Ron said with a grin. "Without getting laughed out of the room." But he was talking again, and he hadn't meant to do that. He paused just inside the doorway to his bedroom (half to make sure he hadn't left a couple day's worth of clothes strewn over the floor), kissed her again, leaning against the wall a bit. He thought they were on the same page, really.

They were on the same page. When he was against the wall she tried to slither out of his arms so that she could stand against him rather than letting him hold her up, and then her hands were on his shirt, opening buttons, as she stood on her toes to kiss him again. Really, neither of them wanted to talk about it. Tonight, at least, was one of those nights where they didn't have to pretend that they did.

Ron let her down carefully, but wasn't ready to take his hands off of her; they slipped up underneath her shirt to run along her sides, coming to rest at her ribs, her back. She felt incredibly warm. It was hard to kiss her and try to tug her shirt higher at the same time, and he was pretty sure he would have to pick one or the other at some point, but for now he was content with just trying his best. When the front of his shirt was hanging open he pushed himself away from the wall and started for the bed.

He felt warmer than she'd expected, pressed this close, like she'd been cold and he was on fire, and she sighed at that, comfortable and still on edge against him - then he was starting for the bed, and she let him pull her with him, stepping out of her shoes on the way.

Hermione was rather more coordinated than he was. When he landed on the bed - which he had actually made, by some impossible stroke of luck - he still had his shoes on and his sleeve was tangling in his watch and it all seemed a little hopeless. But that was all right; he was more interested in her anyway. He grinned, slipping his arm a little tighter around her waist beneath her shirt and pulling her down with him. He wouldn't even complain that she hadn't noticed his room was - relatively - clean.

It wasn't that she hadn't noticed, she just hadn't appreciated it as much when she had other things - like oblivion - on her mind. She laughed, soft and still a little tense, as he pulled her down, and then she tugged at his shirt until it came free of his watch and she could help him to pull it off.

He tossed the shirt off of the bed and turned to her again, taking the tail of her shirt in hand and working it over her head - her clothes always seemed a little more complicated somehow. When it had landed somewhere up by the pillows he kissed her again. He thought he still felt something tight in her back as he stroked up to her shoulder, and it wasn't surprising, but it wasn't good. He relaxed into the mattress for a moment, pressed flush against her and trying to lose himself against her mouth for a little while.

Hermione closed her eyes as he tossed her shirt away, and tried just sinking against him. It worked, almost, she felt a little of the tension and frustration shifting to something else - a type of frustration she could, at least, do something about.

He could tell she had relaxed a little, and that was a start, a pretty damned good start considering. He gave it another few minutes, until he was clinging a little too tightly to her sides and his lips had moved down to her throat in his desire to have more of her, before his hand ran down to her hip and the back of thigh, before he started helping her out of her pants. Everything else was starting feel pretty far away, for him, and he was grateful.

Before this, before the first time they'd fallen, awkwardly, into this, Hermione really hadn't thought of how nice it was to stop thinking. She didn't advocate it often, but being able to stop worrying, stop going over things, stop remembering and just feel him, kiss him, it was a relief. More of a relief today than, maybe, it ever had been.

Hermione sighed under his touch, under his kisses, and her hands were busy trying to help strip away the rest of his clothes, eager to start being oblivious.

It was always a relief, probably more than it should have been, to feel her really start to respond. He had always felt that way about Hermione relaxing, actually, thinking back nearly to their first year together. Now it was just ... impossibly magnified. He finally got around to kicking his shoes off, sending them over the side with the other items they were both pulling off. A minute later he arched against her, sliding his hand under her side, beneath her shoulder, and kissed her deeply, planting a knee in the mattress and nudging her onto her back.
