WHO: Daphne Greengrass & Dean Thomas
WHAT: Scene lottery - The squid wants a friend.
WHERE: By the lake.
WHEN: Afternoon-ish, September 10, 1997
RATING: R - language, definitely.

Honestly, this last year at Hogwarts was turning into one thing after another, she was still awaiting a reply from her parents, which was going to be more than likely something she doesn't want to hear. They couldn't forcibly make her marry Nikolas could they? That couldn't be legal, she was her own person, she was an adult, she didn't need to take this from anyone. What her parents could do, however, is threaten to write her out of the inheritance. As the eldest, she was bound to get a pretty penny, they could take all that away, and leave her penniless and shamed. It was that single thought that made her believe that she really had no choice but to go through with this. Luckily, she was able to escape from her thoughts during class, focus on whatever repetitive garbage the teachers decided to throw at her. It was during free periods that her mind would go rampant, and the only way to calm it would be to distract herself.

The distraction today was a walk by the lake, it seemed like a good idea, autumn was rapidly descending upon the grounds, leaving a slight chill to the air. A slight breeze came off the water, leaving ripples in its wake, and bringing cool fresh air. Leaving her robes behind, Daphne pulled on a black sweater vest over her white button up shirt. Slytherin crest sewn proudly upon the material. Dark blue eyes stared out over the water watching the calm water which reflected the blue sky in it. Thankfully that squid was nowhere to be seen, that last thing Daphne wanted was to see some horrendous creature breaching the water and gliding upon the surface.

Lips curled into a disgusted sneer at the mere thought, the lake while nice to look at once in awhile was becoming a bore. Turning to head back to the castle, she began to consider working on that potions homework Snape assigned. The girl barely managed three steps before noticing something latching on to her ankle. Glancing down, eyes widened as she saw a disgusting, slimy tentacle wrapped around her ankle. She instantly brandished her wand, aiming at the tentacle hardly managing a syllable, three more tentacles came shooting out of the water, one wrapping around her waist, and the other two at her arms, knocking her wand to the grass. Trapped, Daphne could only scream, a blood curdling, high pitched shriek! That set off the squid it began to pull her into the water.

Dean had been on his way in from the Quidditch pitch, where he'd mostly been watching a few others fly, when he decided to forget heading in at all for a bit. He'd spent most of the summers hols outside. He was glad to be back at school, really. For the most part, anyway. But with school starting up, they'd be spending most of their days inside the castle. And time went back quick when classes were going on - it'd be winter soon enough. He had some reading to do, but it could wait. Dean decided to just amble about outside for a bit. It was a nice enough sort of day that being out in the sun sounded like more fun that plopping across his bunk with schoolwork.

He headed for the lake, wandering a crooked sort of path. He should have brought his sketchbook with him, but he didn't feel like wandering back up to the Tower to fetch it.

Dean froze in the middle of pondering whether or not he wanted to get over being lazy and go get it when a scream cut through the air. Definitely feminine, and it sounded like whoever it was, someone was half murdering them.

Dean had always suffered from a bit of a white knight syndrome, when it came to girls. Or people he cared about. He wanted to protect them, and rescue if they needed it. He was usually drawn to the sort of girls who didn't NEED that kind of treatment, though. Which made it more of a hindrance than a help. But it was part of who he was, and he ran off toward the sound of the screaming without thinking twice.

Dean was a wizard, and he wasn't a bad one. But he still thought like a muggle first, which meant that when he caught sight of Daphne in a squid leglock, being dragged toward the water, his first reaction wasn't to grab for his wand, but to grab her "What the hell - let her go!" The squid was, usually, a friendly sort. Dean wasn't even sure it was trying to hurt her now. But she definitely didn't look like going for a swim was in her plan.

He managed to run up in time to catch her wrist before she hit the water, trying to catch her and draw her back. Unfortunately, in a battle of strength between Deans and Giant Squids, the squid came up the winner. The squid just pulled, and Daphne was yanked into the water, though not beneath it, and Dean lost his grip on her hand.

Which was when he remembered his wand. "Let go!" he yelled, as if the tentacles might listen. He shot a weak stun toward a waving tentacle that wasn't holding on to Daphne, not wanting to hurt the thing. McGonagall would probably have his head if he did.

The stun seemed to work a bit, since the tentacles loosened. Dean waded waist-deep into the water to wrap an arm around Daphne, trying to get enough of a grip to drag her back toward the shore of the lake before the squid decided that it wasn't ready to let go after all. "You all right?" he asked, slapping with his free hand at the tentacle that had wound around her ankle to get it to loosen.

Of all the people to come rescuing her, it had to be a bloody muggle too daft to use his wand right off the bat? I'm doomed! was all that Daphne could think about, as she clawed at the ground, trying to stop the squid from yanking her into the water. This wasn't going to end good, and even as Dean grasped her wrist, she knew this wasn't going to end good. He was one single boy trying to play tug of war with a giant squid. As Dean lost her grip Daphne felt the sudden chill of the water as she splashed waist deep into the lake. Her stomach turned at the thought of what could be lurking in the depths.

Finally, Dead did something smart, he brandished his wand, though the spell was hardly a spell. "Stop being a bloody gentleman and blast the fucking thing!" Oh yes, she just cursed, she was waist deep in mug, algae, and lake water, she wasn't about to be polite. Feeling the tentacles loosen a tiny bit, Daphne took advantage of that, she kicked at the tentacle, freeing herself and practically collapsing into Dean's arms as he pulled her back to the shore.

Visibly shivering, Daphne shook his arms off of her, and stood up. "Do I look all bloody right?! That squid is a ---" She never got to finish that statement, considering a tentacle shot out of the lake once more and wrapped around her waist, not lingering this time to drag her back slowly, but instead lifting her ten feet into the air just above the lake. Words failed her as she all she could do was scream. Fists pounding into the fleshy tentacle around her waist, attempting to get it to release her, but to no avail. The beast just swung her around like she was some rag doll.

This was NOT a good day for her.

"I can't HURT it!" Dean argued, pulling at her when she collapsed onto him. Which wasn't easy, really. She was all wet and the sweater she wore slipped oddly - it made it hard to get a hold on her.

Of course that was just made all the harder when she was suddenly plucked out of his arms and dangled in the air. Which looked, Dean noted with some small portion of his mind really bloody uncomfortable.

He couldn't even reach her to try to pull her down again, which left him nothing to do but go for his wand again. Dean still really didn't want to hurt the squid - plus he wasn't sure HOW to hurt it, other than stinging its waving legs with a hex or two. He'd try to levitate her away, but that might turn into a tug of war, too.

He settled for sending another stunning spell - stronger this time, and following it with a Rictusempra.

The stun still didn't seem to do loads, but the tickling charm, at least, had an effect. The tentacles waved wildly and the water bubbled, and then the squid dropped Daphne - more or less on top of Dean. He grunted, both of them hitting the water - though Daphne had a Dean cushion, at least.

Dean managed to get a nose full of water in the process, and he sneezed as he wrapped his arms back around her, scrambling to his feet and dragging Daphne back through the water and to the shore, then back far enough that the reaching squid-bits couldn't grab at either of them.

He was in a hurry, and she was wet and so was he. It wasn't as if he MEANT for his hands to slip as much as they did - he was just trying to help! But he still managed to have hands in soft, chest-areas he wasn't really supposed to, and then just a little lower than her back when he almost lost his grip after realizing he'd accidentally groped. "You okay?" Dean asked awkwardly, letting her go carefully when they were out of the danger zone.

The squid's tentacles were waving about. Dean thought they looked. . . disappointed?

This had to be worse the experience ever, not only was the water in the lake freezing, but the tentacles wrapped around her waist felt like they were going to crush her insides. Finally, Dean did something RIGHT and Daphne managed to slip from the squids grip, her sweater, however getting stuck in the squids grasp as she went crashing down on top of Dean. The wind was knocked out of her, and she probably lingered on top of him ten more seconds than she should have as she tried to catch her breath.

However, recovery came quickly the moment she realized Dean's hands slipped to highly inappropriate areas on her body. Scrambling out of his grasp, hands managed to swat him away once more, "Do I look okay?! I'm soaking wet, and I'm freezing, and that bloody THING in the lake just attacked me!" Pale eyes scanned the grass for her wand. AHA! Snatching up her wand, she turned back towards the tentacles which were waving in... disappointment in the air. Daphne didn't even pay attention to the fact that she was soaking wet at this point, white shirt now completely sheer and clinging to her slender frame and her bra completely visible through the material. Skirt was clinging to her legs, and probably showing a bit too much skin, as her knee high stockings were coated in thick mud, and her shoes were lost in the lake forever.

Brown hair was plastered to her cheeks, as lips curled into a sneer. Lifting up her wand, she swished and flicked shooting stinging hex, after stinging hex towards the squid. Some of them hitting the creature, some of them missing completely, however it did the trick as the tentacles began to sink back into the water, slowly and almost sadly back into the depth.

While Dean was actually wary of harming it, Daphne was not, she didn't care. It attacked her! She wanted it dead, and gone. Even as the last ripples from the tentacles vanished, Daphne was still hexing the water.

"Hey! " Dean reached to try to knock her wand arm aside. "Look, we can tell someone. Uh - Professor Weasley?" Usually Dean would tell Hagrid. . . but that wasn't exactly an option. Maybe that's why the squid was up in arms. Hagrid had been fond of it, maybe it was lonely now?

Or maybe it just wanted to drag pretty girls in. Dean had no idea. It hadn't tried to grab HIM after all.

The squid vanished under the water. Dean didn't think it was really much worse for the wear, but he'd best telling someone, even if Daphne didn't want to, since it might be nursing a few wounds. Some of those hexes looked like they landed. "Well you don't look hurt, anyway," he answered.

She actually looked very, very wet. And her clothes were more or less plastered against her. And he could see through to the pink hint of skin beneath, through the white shirt, anyway. Dean was just as soaked, but he wasn't in white, and wasn't a girl. The view likely wasn't that impressive - just wet clothes.

Dean averted his eyes upward to Daphne's face, a little too late, probably. "Do you need help back in then, or anything? Or I could get Madame Pomfrey if you need?"

Impressive? Daphne narrowed her gaze as she followed Dean's eyes to her wet shirt. Rolling her eyes, she shook her head, "You act like you've never seen a girl wet before." Leaning down, she tugged off her wet, and dirty stockings. Rolling them up into a ball, she threw them out into the lake. Now the squid can have a souvenir. "That's not the point, Thomas, I was attacked for no bloody reason, I didn't instigate that ruddy thing. Didn't goad him, if... if you weren't here who knows what that bloody menace could have done!" Daphne did have a point, if it weren't for Dean, she could have drowned the moment the squid dragged her into the lake.

"I don't need to speak to Madame Pomgrey, and I certainly do not want to talk to that trai--" Daphne caught herself mid-sentence, "Professor Weasley, like he will bloody do anything, knowing him he would sympathize with the squid, and try to justify its actions." Tossing wet strands over her shoulders, she proceeded to untuck her shirt from her skirt and wring out the ends just so she wasn't dripping wet.

"Well not every day in shirts that have gone all see through," Dean answered, honest - if awkward about it. "I don't think it meant to hurt you. . . but yeah, someone's going to have to take a look if it's going to just go randomly grabbing at people," he agreed. He kept his eyes on her face as she yanked off her stockings. Or tried to. They wanted to slide down a bit. It wasn't his fault, she was. . . bending and shite. When she knew she was all wet and see through!

"Maybe it's sick or something." Dean heard the aborted word though, and frowned a little, though he said nothing. He didn't exactly know all the particulars of pureblood families and bloodlines, but he knew that blood traitor was an insult fairly close to "mudblood", in the grand scheme of things. He'd heard the latter enough.

It was really starting to be chilly, standing out here soaking wet, and Dean shrugged. "Do you want. . . I can walk you in or something?" he doubted she would want him to. They weren't exactly on friendly terms. But gentlemen tendencies went along with the white-knight complex. Plus she'd gotten tossed about like a quaffle - she had to be a bit on the sore side.

Daphne rolled her eyes, she could feel bruises forming on her ribs, "Well, it certainly didn't mean to give me a bloody hug." Or maybe it did, it did seem disappointed when she escaped, but what did a squid think it could do with her?! She would drown in the water, and the last thing she wanted was to befriend a squid.

"Then someone should put it out of it's misery." Daphne stated bluntly, fixing her shirt back down, hands ran over the wet material of her skirt.

"Thank you." She stated flatly, for what? She didn't specify, but she was done here. Daphne was wet, cold and her ribs hurt. All she really wanted to do was crawl into a hole and forget this entire scenario. Turning on her heels, she headed back to the castle.

Dean thought actually that might have been what it was doing. Possibly. It'd helped push people back into the boats and all in the past, the squid suddenly being murderous just didn't really seem right. Plus it could have just dragged her under if it really wanted to. Or so he figured.

"Yeah, well. I'll tell Professor Weasley what happened," Dean agreed, rolling his eyes a little at the hostility. But he couldn't really blame her - she had just nearly gotten drowned. And he more or less expected that from her anyway. Snooty Slytherins weren't exactly the sort who chatted amiably with him.

He'd really rather she stop fussing with her shirt though, since that just plastered it to new bits of skin that showed all pink through the white. It was distracting.

Getting a thank you at all from her was almost surprising, and Dean blinked and then smiled a little. "Yeah, no. You're welcome." He started to offer, again, to help her inside. But she was already marching off, and Dean just watched her go for a moment before making a face at himself and then turning to head off and find Professor Weasley.
