Who: Dean and Percy
What: Talking about a job offer, and other things
When: Today, noon
Where: The Lucky Bakery
Rating/Warning: TBA

Dean arrived with a satchel slung across his chest holding his school portfolio and also some miniaturized examples of the work he'd been doing lately. The school portfolio was all muggle, of course, but he had some wizarding portraits and sketches that he could show as well. He wasn't sure how comfortable he was working for the Ministry, but if he was going to be opening his own gallery it was a good idea to get his name out as much as possible, right? And to make contacts. Besides, Ron had asked him to talk to Percy, and as far as Dean was concerned he'd do about anything in the world for Ron that he could. Ron deserved it.

So he walked into the little bakery and looked over the scones and pasty selection in the display counter before taking a seat and waiting for Percy to arrive.

Percy came in, his robes pristine, and he surveyed the room before walked towards Dean with purpose. It had been a busy morning; Tuesdays tended to be absorbed with meetings of one sort or another and Percy was relieved when the last had ended. He extended his hand to Dean, "Good to see you. Have you ordered you? I must apologize if I'm running a bit late. It was grueling getting out today," and his attention shifted to the girl behind the counter, "Ham and cheese scone? And some iced tea I should think," and he glanced at Dean.

"What will you have?" he asked, and he gave himself a moment to slow down slightly, still moving on Ministry time. He was eager to get through the business end of things, trying to figure a way he could ferret out some information about Lavender from her good friend without raising too many flags about it, "You might try a lunch scone, Dean. They're rather good," Percy offered, even as his eyes slipped to the items Dean was carrying. He didn't comment, but knew he had to at least talk about the art; it wouldn't do to spend the entire time plaguing Dean with questions about Lavender.

"Not yet," Dean said after shaking Percy's hand. He looked the man over, and felt a little bit like he was a lower form again and Percy was his prefect or Head Boy. He still seemed as proper and as rushed as ever. Dean smiled, though, always friendly, and went back to the counter to order a pepperoni and cheese pasty.

By the time he came back with his lunch and his soda, he still wasn't sure why he was here. "So, hope and unity, eh? What is it going to be, like an advert campaign?"

Percy had found a table, a larger one to allow for Dean to pull his work out, and he sat, waiting for Dean to come and take a seat across from him. He looked blankly at first, his mind far more on Lavender than the art proposal, "Hm. What did you say? Oh yes. That. Exactly. Its an idea I had, a promotional program, to promote better feelings in general. Sort of get the shift off of one individual and more on the fact that there are some who are struggling and need a bit of a lift."

Percy paused, and sipped his ice tea, and set his cup down before continuing, "We have the funds. What we need is an idea of a marketing strategy really," and he hesitated, "With an art focus to it."

He took a bit of his own food, chewing slowly as he let himself relax. The entire meeting was not exactly a farce; he did have the money, and this idea had been teasing at the back of his brain for ages. And with the recent desecration of the statue that they had wanted to represent Harry, it had suddenly become important to get this idea off the ground and rolling.

Dean took the seat and sat his portfolio on the empty chair at the side of the table, but he didn't take anything out yet. He wanted to eat first - he'd been up long enough that his hangover potions had all kicked in, but he felt like he should keep food in his stomach and drink a lot of fluids, just in case. He really had had too much to drink last night with Seamus.

"That's a good idea. Get the focus off of .... " He cleared his throat, hating to say it, then went on, "Off of Harry. He woudn't have wanted the attention anyway. And onto moving on, or whatever, helping the people who're still fighting and struggling with it. The Aide Office might help you there, yeah? Seems like something they'd get behind. Didn't they do some big Muggleborn and Proud thing with the Weird Sisters and what all? I even saw those adverts while I was in the States." But when it came to marketing, if that was what they wanted Dean for, it was out of his element. He was an artist, that was about it.

Percy gave a small shrug and a smile, "Yes, he would not want this much focus on himself. He never did seem one for much attention," he said, as he ate a bit himself, "So, why not a bit of socializing before we talk shop? I believe it has been a number of years since we both roamed the halls of Hogwarts together. How are things with you?"

Percy thought it was a safe way to sort of guide the conversation towards friends. And then, after they sort of set a more casual tone, he'd look at the sketches that Dean had brought and give him a chance to create some ideas.

Dean relaxed into his seat and ate, shrugging. "Well, after school I headed off to see the world. Or at least a part of it. I went to art school in the States, New York City? That was four years, then I hung about for a bit, but it was time to come back home. I'm staying with my best mate now, Seamus Finnigan if you remember him? That's about it, though. You?"

"The States?! Well, that sounds brilliant. And in New York? Living there? Did you enjoy it all?" Percy asked, geninuely curious about Dean's trip. He'd not been there yet; he'd let himself go on warmer excursions but had always headed east from home.

"And you live with Seamus," he said, not answering any questions about himself yet. He'd found, in his interviewing time, that people liked to talk about themselves more, and usually shared more than they realized. It was a bit calculating, but Percy had gotten good at it in the last few years, turning some of his eye for detail on paying more attention to others, "What did you find you enjoyed doing best? Painting? Drawing?," he said, feeling the smile forming on his face.

"Loved it," Dean said with a wide, honest sort of grin. "It was brilliant. I lived in a tiny flat with a bunch of other artists who were in school and happened to be magical. They have a decent support system there for connecting wizards with each other..." He trailed off taking another bite of his pasty.

Then he realized that the questions had turned professional again, and he supposed he needed to start really thinking of this as an interview. "Well, my primary art is my painting. I enjoy sculpting, and photography, but the mediums just don't speak to me the way a blank canvas does, you know?" And without his being an artist, Dean was fairly sure that Percy didn't know, really, but it wasn't a serious question, either.

"Painting. That's interesting. I find," and Percy gave him a wry sort of smile, "I'm not artistic like that, but I find playing the piano lets me get out something inside of me, communicating with music," he said, his grin broadening, "That sounds like quite the life. It must have given you a real taste for the art world, especially there. New York is reputed to have some excellent museums. Did you get to see them?" and a notion crossed his mind, "Your friends must have missed you very much, being gone for so long. Did I miss the welcome home party? I'm sure Ron would have mentioned it," he said as he ate more of his lunch himself.

He was almost finished and thought he might go fetch himself something sweet to finish it off. He decided he'd wait, and offer to get Dean a piece of cake or pie if he wanted it; they were certainly in the right place for it.

"No party," Dean shook his head, snorting. "Did I see the museums? Well, yeah, I was in art school, wasn't I? Most of the studies we did were at museums around the city, when we weren't having masters come in for us, but I think most of the inspiration I get is from people I know, not other's work. Well... you'll see when we get to my portfolio, I guess. I can go on and on, but most people get a little glassy eyed after a bit."

"No, go on. I like hearing about it," Percy said, as he sipped at his drink, "Really. It's interesting, and so different then the stuff I usually hear about. It's refreshing, to know that one can go venture forth and see the world," and he found himself grinning again, even as Dean's words made him reflect on his own life, "There's a part of me that wishes I had just chucked it all, and gone off to Vienna to work on my piano playing. But it's not a very practical notion, especially back in the day. So you be proud of your adventures. They sound great," Percy said, encouragingly.

"Before we look, do you want something sweet? I can't help but want to sample something, if you are game?"

"Back in the day?" Dean laughed, shaking his head again. "You're not that much older than me, Weasley. Er. Percy. I mean, we were in school together for a few years. I don't think you can chuck it in for the cane and spectacles just yet..."

With that, Dean's attention went back to the counter. "Chocolate," He said. He did have his weak spots.

Percy found himself chuckling, "Okay, so I make myself out to be so damn old. I need to shed that role. You must understand that when I got out of school, it was straight to the Ministry I ran. Sometimes I wonder what my life would have become had I let my hair down more, so to speak," and he found himself truly smiling, "Fred and George give me enough grief about being the old man. I know I'm not that much older than the lot of you," and his mind went to the younger woman who he was itching to see, itching to speak about with this man.

"Chocolate it is," he said, nodding. And after a moment, Percy left and returned with two slices of some sort of chocolate layered confectionery creation, "I got you Death by Chocolate, and myself, Chocolate Dreams. Damn, Ron would die for something like this. I think I'll pick up an extra piece and send it to him," he added, his eyes turning to Dean's face with a glint of amusement, "I hope you don't think of me as being too old. The idea that I might be considered older by Ron's friends," he said, even as he took a bite and made a face of happiness, "I'd be wounded."

Dean was smiling again, though, and he picked up his fork. "Bring me chocolate this this, mate, and you can be as old as you want to be. You're a sodding infant if you want to be." He laughed, taking a few bites and then groaning in appreciation. "Nice."

"It certainly is," Percy said as he gave a small sigh of contentment with his next bite. But he wasn't going to consume the entire piece and go into some sort of sugar coma; he loved sweets but had a bit more control for moderation than Ron.

"So, have you seen many of your friends since you've been back? I thought Fred mentioned that you'd stopped by the shop the other day," he said casually, getting ready to work towards his point, "And I believe I met a mutual friend of yours and Ron's. Her name is Lavender Brown," and after a bit of a pause, to eat more cake he went on, "She seemed a rather nice sort. Are you very good friends with her?" he asked, trying to sound utterly casual even as his insides did flip flops.

"Yeah, I stopped by and saw the twins a few times. Seeing the WWW in New York City always made me think about home, you know? No one would believe I knew them. Fred was giving me some advice about a business idea..." Which he realized as he said that he really didn't want to talk about yet, so he went on instead and rushed to answer Percy's question. "Lav? Yeah, of course. She was in Gryffindor and our year. Love her, she's great. Just wish I got to see her more."

"Right. I think I remember her a bit from school. She's changed so much since then," he added, still trying to keep himself sounding casually interested, even as he hung on every word Dean spoke, "So, you don't get to see her much? Do you know if she has lived on her own this whole time or did she stay with her parents? Does she have any special interest? You know, the things most people wouldn't know outright?" and he realized how his questions might sound, "It just helps to know. I have a habit of passing by things, and for those that are more recluse, it is a nicety to pick things up for them. Its not an official part of the job," he said, blustering slightly, "But I find that it does tend to lift them up and offer more moral support," he said, as he took a bigger bite of cake, really to block his mouth from talking. He found he wanted to gush, and share far too much. Fred would be shaking his head at Percy at the moment and probably holding his sides from laughter at the way he was acting.

Dean looked up and at Percy. It did seem strange, but Dean was prone to thinking that people were telling him the truth, really, unless he had a reason to think they weren't.

"I know she's close to her mum, but I think she's lived alone for a while. Seeing her's part of your job? Is that because of what happened in the battle?" He didn't know how much Percy knew, really.

Percy nodded, swallowing quickly, "After the war, I thought, well, I suggested we start a division that made sure to offer people support. So many were isolated, with their wands and homes stolen by the DE under the guise of the Ministry. I thought we should offer them help to get their things back and it sort of turned into more than that, offering them medical supplies and even food items if they were home bound," and he paused, and looked at Dean, "She was greatly traumatized by the war. I only recently found out that the individual who was handling her case was doing an appalling job. He had not been to visit her, but had sent things via owl," and at this, Percy found himself almost glowering, looking into his plate, "She's been so alone, with her parents and few friends visiting, basically isolating and growing more and more intimidated by the rest of the world. She needs..," and his eyes were on the chocolate, not seeing it, "She needs to feel safe. To be able to walk outside and know she won't hurt anyone or they will not hurt her."

He blinked, coming back to the present and not the vision he had of her, in her house, her smiling, and he looked at Dean, trying not to color, "She's...well, she seems such a kind sort. I hate to think of her going through so much of this one her own."

He wasn't sure what else he could say, but then decided to try to get more from Dean, "Is she artistic, like you? I know she plays the piano. Do you know if she paints as well? Or reads? Or eat chocolate like this?" he added, glancing at the cake that was disappearing, and thinking of Ron.

Dean watched Percy talk about her and wondered if Percy knew just how he looked - transported, as if he was forgetting where he was. Dean was starting to get the impression that he'd been called her under false pretenses...

But it made him smile, too. Percy seemed a good enough bloke, and he didn't begrudge him trying, if he was right about what Percy seemed to be trying. "I haven't seen her in nearly five years, mate, I'm sorry.I can tell you about the things she liked in school..." And he hadn't realized her situation was as dire as Percy had described. It was hard to reconcile that description of Lavender to the girl he'd known so well.

"You like her, eh?"

"Oh," Percy said at first, some disappointment to his tone, but then he nodded, "Well, okay. School things might help cheer her up a bit," and he had to stop, startled at Dean's comment.

"I...I...It is partially an aspect of my job, to lend her some assistance," but he found himself stopping, and his expression changing as he made up his mind to man up, and stop pussy footing about it.

"Is it that obvious?"

Percy leaned forward, the cake unfinished and forgotten, 'She really is. I don't remember her ever being so incredibly...alluring before, when we were all in school. Which is probably just as well. I'm not too sure she would have liked me back then. I'm not too sure she likes me now, or understands what I'm feeling," he said with a tone of regret.

Percy could only nod, "She needs people about her, needs to get out. She's not disfigured, at least not anywhere that I could see, but she seems under some misconception that she might hurt others, or that they might hurt her. It may be due to her...alterations that plague her, but I think she is hypersensitive to it all, feeling not exactly persecuted, but," and he paused to find the right word, "But maybe more vulnerable. She's too sweet to be going through these torrid emotions alone."

He gave a heavy sigh and sat back, "I hope you can see her more. Hell, I hope I can see her more," he added sheepishly, and he looked at Dean, "I do want to see your work, if you are still interested in the project. There really is a project; I certainly wouldn't lure you here with false promises. But, I have to admit," and he found himself starting to grin, "You helped me a bit Dean."

"I haven't helped you at all," Dean pointed out, then he snorted. "Let's see, she's sentimental, some people said in school she was silly, but that's not really true. She liked to be the centre of attention, sure, but only because she really did deserve to be a lot of the time. She loved Divination, and I think she liked Astronomy too because of it but I can't remember if that was her or Parvati. You know her best friend is Parvati Patil? Oh, she had a bunny." These were just stupid little facts, though, and Dean felt a little guilty that he couldn't give him anything deeper than those.

As he talked, Dean reached for his satchel and then as he was opening it he laughed at himself. "Oi, and I have two portraits of her in here, if you want to see them." He figured Percy would, so he took out the miniature copies of the portraits he'd sent her copies of just the other day. "I've been practicing some new portrait techniques. These are the most recent I've done, actually."

Percy carefully wiped his hand on a napkin as he accepted each of the portraits, being sure that his plate was out of the way, set off to another table near them as he lay them down on the table. And as he gazed at them, Percy found his breath catching and his heart starting to pound in his ear.

They were absolutely stunning images of her. In both of them, she looked so happy, so alive. He didn't speak for a long moment, his eyes moving from one, then to the other and then back again. Only what seemed like a moment, Percy raised his eyes to Dean's, "They are stunning. She is stunning. You've done such a marvelous job Dean," and after a moment, he went on, "Did she see them? I think she would like them," he said, even as his mind was registering what Dean had listed: astronomy, divinations, sentimental, parvati, rabbits.

He grew quiet again, and then after another moment, he said, "Are...are they for sale by any chance?"

"For sale?" Dean shook his head. "No, not yet anyway. I sent her the same sort of copies and asked if she wouldn't mind my showing them, and she said that was fine, but I'd have to ask her permission too before I decided whether or not to sale them. You understand." The way he said that wasn't a question. Percy may have been a good guy, but he wasn't going to do anything about those portraits without permission. "I just brought them as part of my portfolio, sorry."

"Oh," Percy said, and he nodded, flushing slightly at his presumption and audacity. It wasn't like him to be so direct about things; it was a bit daunting to be so enamored as he was with her. He handed them back, "Of course, I understand," and his eyes rested on them before he turned to look up at Dean, "Well, if you ever do decide to sell them, I'd be interested in buying them. Definitely."

He turned to the table behind him, and got his tea, "What else have you brought? I like how you could feel her emotion in that picture. Maybe that is an idea for the project? People who seem to almost speak what they are feeling? All good emotions of course."

Dean watched Percy blush and then chuckled, taking his school portfolio out and handing it over. "I'll ask her," he said, as he did.

The portfolio was the best of his work at school - quite a few sketches, and muggle photographs of larger art installations and paintings and sculptures that he'd done. There were some wizarding photographs too, of paintings that were also charmed to move, in a small section toward the back, just to prove that he could do magical art as well.

Some of the pieces were a little more risque - but nothing more shocking than a few nudes. Compared to some of the blokes he'd known at school, Dean's art was relatively tame.

Percy stopped for a moment as he began to look, "Oh! But you mustn't tell her its me who wants them. I...I don't want her thinking me too forward or odd," he said, pausing as he waiting for Dean's answer. He wasn't looking at the art, but looking at Dean, "She hardly knows me and I expect she might think it rather forward of me, to be purchasing art of herself. Couldn't you tell her something else? Say a private collector wanted them?" and even as he spoke, his face flushed more red.

Dean looked at Percy carefully, then cleared his throat. "I don't make a habit of lying to my friends, Percy. Not even to help someone who has good intentions and all that. So if you don't want me asking, I won't. I can tell her someone wants them, but if she asks who I won't lie."

Percy paused, duly impressed at the directness of Dean's comments. It made a part of him squirm inside slightly; Dean's comments made him feel like a coward. And faced with such boldness, Percy wondered if he could ever be as bold and as determined about Dean's friend as Dean was himself. He wondered, fleetingly, if he could ever be as direct and as bold with Lavender.

Percy let the portfolio settle against the table and he met Dean's eyes, "Dean, I have offended you and that was not my intent. Of course do not lie to her. I only meant...if she asks..," and Percy pursued his lips and gave a small shrug, "Then she finds out. But do ask her, please," he said, finding his eyes turned back to the portfolio and catching sight of her face again. He paused again, and then reluctantly moved on, turning the pages. There were other good pieces in the collection, and Percy nodded, and pulled out a different picture, a photo Dean had taken.

"You have a good eye for the emotion. I think that should be the basis of this project. People expressing different emotions. Does that sound like something you might be interested in creating? Maybe a series of paintings we can use for the project?"

Percy was trying to pretend that he didn't feel foolish; his mind went back to Fred's lecture about not being such a damn git about it all.

"I'm not offended, mate," Dean shrugged, and he didn't sound offended, really, Dean just always thought it was best to be straight up with people about things. Since the war, even before, he'd wanted to pride himself on being someone that could be counted on, could be honest, it was what he was doing for his family now, and he wanted to be that for his friends as well. He wouldn't compromise it. Percy seemed like a good enough bloke, though, and Dean didn't want to hurt his chances. "I'll be as subtle about it as I can, when I ask." He said finally, and then leaned closer to look at the photograph Percy was holding.

"It definitely seems like it's the way to go with it. Maybe something a little gritty, but with hopeful expressions? I could do some mock ups if you want, and you can tell me what you think?"

"That sounds like it will work Dean. It could be really effective," he said, his mind not really as focused as he would like. He stared at the picture, his mind on the emotions he saw on her face in those small paintings, wishing he could make her smile like that again, honestly wishing he could just go and show up at her place.

He looked up at Dean, "So, I'll have an owl sent out, transferring the money directly to your account unless you would prefer the coin? Why not six different images? What would be a fair price for the mock-ups?"

Dean shrugged. "Mock ups aren't worth much of anything, mate. They're just like... rough drafts. Sketches of ideas. But if you want six paintings I guess the cost depends on the size you want. I mean, are we doind Millimants Marquees, or something to go into a frame, or a mural in the ministry, or what?"

"I think we should start with six protypes, and if you can device a few more, that might work. It's not an advertising campaign, exactly. It should have a far more personal feel to it, even if it is sort of selling positive attitudes and what not. And you know Dean, here's a challenge. I think putting them in places for any wizard to see would hearten them, you know? Give them a boost of moral, so even if it can be viewed by the Muggle world, or maybe something overlaid with a Muggle type image. A boost in plain sight, helping people feel like this is their world again. It's appalling how many are still scarred by it all. No one escaped and we all need to know we are still about. I like the idea of paintings. Big ones too. Billboard size, hell, maybe even up in the Tube."

Percy paused, letting his mind shift off of Lavender, "What do you think?"

He shifted through the pictures again, trying to act as if he was looking at each one intently when all he wanted was to catch a glimpse of her again. He found it, and he tried to not stare at her smiling face as he looked over at Dean. He could tell Dean saw it all, and he flushed again, "I guess I have it pretty bad."

"That sounds like a good idea. Whatever I make can be tranfigured whatever size you want it, really, so I'll do some prototypes that are small and we can go from there. Subway tubes and billboards work. They do it in the big cities in the States all the time - just a charm so that the muggles don't really notice it, works just fine."

Dean shrugged, then watched the way Percy seemed to keep going back to the portraits and sketches of Lav. He laughed, and at least Percy realized he was caught.

"Here, mate..." he took the napkin that was lying unused on their table and took out his coloured pencils. About fourty five minutes later, during which Dean couldn't have been disturbed even by a war erupting outside, the napkin transformed. It wasn't the best he could do, of course, it was rushed and not in the best medium, or with his paints, but for napkin art, he thought it turned out alright.

"Just for you. A Dean Thomas original."
