nikolas vaisey doesn't need a broom to fly ([info]besserwisser) wrote in [info]wished,

WHO: Nikolas and Daphne Vaisey
WHAT: THE VAISEYS DO ESPANA.
WHERE: A Wizard market in Barcelona, not far from where they are staying for the week.
WHEN: Sunday 11 July, 2003.  Early afternoon.

They had only been in Spain since Friday, but time seem to have slowed and when Nikolas had awoken that morning it was with the feeling that he had been here for at least a week already. While this might ordinarily have been a very bad thing indeed, he was currently of the mind that the more time spent away from home the better, and that when the time did come to return at the end of the week, it would be with much reluctance. Perhaps the course of a week would see him rid of the sort of cabin fever feeling he'd been experiencing in Bath, but right now he found very little appealing about going home.

He and Daphne had spent most of the morning in the vicinity of the hotel - Barcelona had a rather bustling Wizarding community, and they were hardly the only tourists. Luckily, this meant that accommodations were plentiful and, as they could afford it, of high quality. The trip had, so far, had a leisurely pace, one that Nikolas would be glad to keep up. It would be fun to experience the local culture and sights, but it was good not to have to rush, or to think about coming back and working.

Having had a late lunch and coming out of it feeling very full, they were now wending their way through one of the larger outdoor markets. The weather was perfect for it and, despite the mild sunburn Nikolas had acquired after an oversight the day before, he felt no need to spend the day indoors. Given the size of the crowds, everyone else seemed to have the same idea. Daphne had already made a few purchases, but for the most part they were just browsing. As he glanced to one of the carts to his right, a very garish and brightly colored hat caught his eye. It was plainly hideous, and he wondered if Daphne had seen it and thought the same. Making sure that she wouldn't miss the chance to comment, he grabbed her wrist and pointed with his free hand, a skeptical smirk on his face.

"Wait, wait, wait." He reached over and plucked the hat up, ignoring a suspicious glance from the merchant, an old women with a bored expression. "I think this is obviously what you've been spending the past half-hour looking for."

Barcelona.

Just the name made Daphne smile, there was something exotic about Spain. Something that not even Greece - the country her family originated from - held. There something liberating and exhilerating, something that made Daphne feel free. Her attire changed to accomodate the weather, humidity was something she was used to and in a country like Spain there was plenty of it. Her attire at home in England revolved around muted grays, greens, whites and blacks usually form fitting and suitable to a "socialite heiress" of high pedigree and money. Her mother liked to consider Daphne's clothing to that of royalty without the glitz, business chic without the job. In Spain all that was shed for brighter colors and bolder fashion. Today's clothing was a flowing tunic styled dress that hung off her shoulders and while it did not cling to her body it ended about mid-thigh, enough to show off those long legs she possesed. A simple pair of white sandal with an intimidatingly high heel completed the outfit. It was an outfit that was bound to turn heads and not in a negative sort of way. Something about her screamed chic, and it wasn't just the bags that hung off her arms at the moment.

At the sound of Nikolas' voice telling her to wait, Daphne paused, still holding up a bag as her other hand was grasped, those bright blue eyes glanced curiously over at Nikolas. Eyes widened as he held up the hat, it was hideous and a horrid orange hue. Lips curled into a sneer as she dropped the bag and moved next to Nikolas to look over the hat. "Oh darling," she sighed feigning a whimsical sigh, "You're absolutely right, it's perfect." Plucking the hat from his hands, Daphne examined it with scrutiny, before her lips curled into a devious smirk.

"But alas, you see, I have been searching for this exact hat only I wanted it in clementine orange, this is obviously mandarin orange." Shaking her head with disappointment, she looked up at Nikolas. "But, you know, my dear, you look amazing in mandarin orange." Leaning forward to tugged the hat on to Nikolas' head, "Yes, that definitely suits you best."

Head tilted to the side, as a finely manicured finger tapped her cheek thoughtfully and stared at Nikolas. Never in a million years would Daphne had predicted this would be her future. She never thought she would be vacationing with a man who five years prior she hardly knew - and on top of that be married to him. Daphne never saw herself married, at least not at the age of 23, yet here she was; Mrs Daphne Vaisey. There were times where she woke up and still wondered when she would get off this crazy train, but on the end she knew this was not a dream. She was stuck and so was he, she knew instead of being a complete bitch and making everyone miserable she could just suck it up and make the best of it. Nikolas wasn't a bad person and in the last couple of years she actually began to find herself enjoying his company. Of course, he had his faults, mainly in the form of Harold Dingle, but she was learning how to ignore those.

Time. That was all she needed. Time to adjust, time to learn. Luckily for her Nikolas was patient.

Nikolas laughed shortly and looked up, as though doing so would allow him to see how the hat looked. He knew there was a mirror just behind him, but he also knew full well that the orange of the hat had no chance of looking anything but horrible against his red hair. Although, he had to wonder who this hat would suit, or who would think it a good idea to wear. For a brief moment, his mind flashed to that strange Ravenclaw girl who had been in the same year at Hogwarts - Lovewell, Lovegood, something like that. She would have worn this, he was certain.

Shaking his head after a few moments, after making as if to deliberate the decision, he pulled the hat off and replaced it where it had rested. The woman working the cart was still regarding them warily, though her look of mild annoyance wasn't hiding her amusement very well. She probably dealt with silly tourists regularly.

"I don't think so." Nikolas sighed, eying Daphne with mock disappointment. "I'm shocked, I always thought you had much better fashion sense than to stick a ginger in an orange hat."

"Orange goes very well with orange. Of course, it only brings out your sunburn a little bit more," There was a teasing tone in her voice, as her blue gaze glanced briefly over the rest of the items on the cart. They were almost as hideous as the hat. Glancing at the old lady for a moment, Daphne wondered how much of this crap she actually sold. She couldn't imagine someone in their right mind purchasing anything on there. Shrugging slightly, Daphne moved to stand next to Nikolas, gaze glancing over the next few stalls. It's not like Daphne actually needed anything from any of them. Back home Daphne made sure she had anything her heart desired, and if she couldn't get it then she made sure to have Nikolas get it for her. A bit spoiled, perhaps, but it just the life she lived.

"We should probably look for something for Astrid," Daphne had to admit, Astrid was like a younger sister to her. She got along better with her sometimes than she did with Nikolas. For some reason she played the older sister role very well, it was likely because that was the only role she knew. Astoria wasn't a little girl anymore, but Daphne couldn't help but feel like she is. Daphne always tried her hardest to protect her sister... but now? Merlin, Astoria was getting married. A wave of guilt washed over her momentarily as she thought of all the wedding planning that needed to get done.

A stand displaying jewelry caught her attention, fingers laced into Nikolas' shirt for a moment just to tug on it to get his attention, she immediately released his shirt as she moved to the cart. This time there was a middle aged man standing behind it and instantly stood at attention as Daphne came over. A big smile spread across his face as he greeted Daphne in Spanish.

Daphne nodded towards the man, but her attention was stolen away by a necklace that was on display. Fingers ran over stones, as she couldn't help but admire it. She had to have it. Leave it to jewelry to take her guilt away.

Nikolas had had his eye out for something he thought Astrid would like, but so far he had only managed to find things that seemed they might make good joke gifts. In the end, he knew he would probably go for one of those anyway, but not without first buying something genuine. His eyes had wandered over to the same jewelry cart that Daphne now motioned toward. This was a vast improvement on the Strange Hats Cart, he had to admit. He took a few moments to glance at a set of earrings that he though Astrid would enjoy before he saw Daphne inspecting a necklace. Her interest was evident, and Nikolas smirked.

"That's quite pretty," he observed, moving closer to have a better look. "And I have the distinct impression you agree."

A coy, almost alluring smile curled on her lips as she heard Nikolas' observation. Plucking the necklace up delicately to turned it around in her fingers feeling the weight of the gems. Turning to face Nikolas she held it up for him to take, "Help me put it on?"

There was an obvious improvement in their relationship, at least on the side of Daphne. She was more tolerable that was for sure. Of course, Daphne and Nikolas didn't have a typical married couple relationship, if anything after four years of marriage they were just becoming friends. There were the occassional times where she flirted with him.... like now. It was subtle and almost shy in it's actions, almost like Daphne was unsure of what to do. With Blaise things like this came naturally, but with Nikolas it was new territory.

The hand not holding out the necklace brushed through her hair, wrapping strands around her fingers and pulling it off her shoulders to reveal her slender neck. The owner of the cart was watching his jewelry carefully, keen eyes were kept on the rather expensive necklace.

There was a beat, but he nodded and took the necklace from her hand. "Of course." Noticing the merchant's pointed looks, Nikolas smiled at him benignly. If this bloke honestly thought they were going to try to steal the necklace, or take some other inappropriate course of action, he was clearly blind.

Nikolas' fingers brushed against the back of her neck as he moved a few stray strands of hair aside. Over the years he had become rather accustomed to more physical closeness with Daphne. There were still many boundaries that they hadn't crossed, and he sometimes wondered when - or if - they would. However, that was particularly on his mind right now. His mother's letter aside, he was perfectly happy to enjoy the trip.

The necklace clasped easily, and when it was secure he drew Daphne's hair back over her neck. "Well? Let's see it then."

Daphne wasn't even paying attention to the man behind the cart. Most of the people in the market viewed tourists as thieves. Daphne noticed that the first day they arrived, they all watched her and Nikolas closely... like they were going to do something illegal.

Tilting her head forward, she felt his fingers brush over her neck. When it came to being physical, Daphne seemed to be moving slowly. It was nothing against Nikolas, she was just.... new to all of this. All her other "relationships" were non-existent. Whatever she had with Blaise Daphne categorized that as being her best friend. With Dean? Well, that was just... she didn't know. It wasn't a relationship because it was never made public. It was... just something, perhaps she could just call it hormones. He played prince in shining armor once and thus she sort of idealized him. It made sense initially, but after reality set in, Daphne knew she couldn't pursue a relationship with Dean.

To be honest, at this point in her marriage, she wasn't sure how to make a "move". She wasn't even sure how Nikolas would react to her actually trying to get close to him. She didn't want to ruin whatever they had by making a move that might not be welcomed. Besides, it's not like Nikolas was... well, giving her any clues. Was he? She couldn't tell half the time.

When Nikolas clasped the necklace, fingers unlaced from her hair, and she turned to face him. "As long as it doesn't look like something my mother would wear." Fingers ran over the stones briefly, before she picked up the mirror that the man behind the cart offered. "Mother has an affinity for wearing things that look expensive. When it comes to jewelry, that means bold, sparkly and occasionally gaudy." An amused smirk curled on her lips as she looked in the mirror, "What do you think?"

"Hm."

He tilted his head a bit and studied the necklace, then took a step back to give Daphne a more appraising look, taking in the effect as a whole. One thing Nikolas had always been grateful for, even in the days when the idea of having to marry Daphne was at its most odious, was that she was a very, very beautiful girl. Regardless of whether he had always liked her or not, it was one thing he'd been aware of from the start of this years ago. As the years had gone on Nikolas felt much more at ease acknowledging it.

"Definitely not something your mother would wear. It's tasteful," he said with a grin. Reaching over, he turned one of the stones a bit so that it caught the light better. "It suits you, I think. Looks much better on you than it did on display."

Daphne's head tilted slightly when Nikolas began to inspect her. It made her a bit uncomfortable to be scrutinized like that, but when he grinned it put her more at ease. Running her fingers through her hair, she smiled and watching his hand move to the necklace. "That's a relief, because it looked gorgeous on display."

Daphne knew she had it pretty good for a girl who seemed so dissatisfied with life. She had a rich, successful husband and the quiet life she dreamed of. Of course, it wasn't exactly how she pictured it all to be, but she couldn't complain. Nikolas wasn't a horrible husband, and thank Merlin he wasn't hideous. Astoria pointed that out when the announcement of their arrangement was made, Nikolas wasn't unattractive, on the contrary, under other circumstances Daphne might have flirted with him during her years at Hogwarts.

Shooting him a teasing smirk, she brushed her hair forward and reached back to unclasp the necklace. "Remind me to pick up something for Astoria as well, we can't go back without something for her. She would simply kill me." Allowing the necklace to drop into her hands, she held it out for the man behind the cart to wrap up. Leaning over she pressed a quick and gentle kiss to Nikolas' cheek and turned to look at the rest of the wares the man had to offer. Daphne didn't know what possessed her to do that, perhaps it was her way of saying thank you for the trip... and all the things she was buying. It most certainly wasn't her money she was spending.

"You're welcome," he said, rather warmly, as her lips brushed his cheek.

In any other marriage he supposed it would have been a romantic gesture as well as a thankful one. Between he and Daphne, Nikolas had a definite sense that there was fondness behind it, but that it still branched from the friendship they had slowly eked out. Regardless, it was nice. He was glad they no longer bickered in earnest, at least no more than normal couples did, and that they could interact without much awkwardness. He thought so, anyway.

"What about these?" Nikolas picked up a pair of earrings from the end of the stand. They were gold, with a small tear-shaped drop of opal and jade hanging from each. Simple, perhaps, but pretty and - he looked at the price tag - expensive.

Daphne glanced over at the earrings and shook her head, her nose crinkled slightly in disgust. "Gold...?" Her mouth was open like she wanted to say something more, but instead, she just bit her tongue and shook her head. It was probably better that way considering she was going to say something not so nice about them. Daphne knew her sister, and gold earrings were not going to be good. Especially gold earrings that were likely not made from real gold. Sure the price tag implied that it was real gold, but Daphne knew better. It was likely to turn Astoria's ears green.

Glancing over the rest of the items passively, Daphne sighed, nothing here seems appropriate for her sister. Running her fingers over an ivory comb, she picked it up and turned it over in her fingers. "You know, I got an owl from my mother earlier today." Glancing sideways at Nikolas, she handed the comb to him for him to look it over. "I think she's completely gone nutters, she's under the impression that I'm going to come back from vacation pregnant." Glancing warily at Nikolas, she wasn't sure how he would take that news. Daphne found it all completely absurd, if her mother wasn't FORCING one thing in her life, it was another.

"I haven't decided if I want to write back or not and give her the disappointing news now or just wait a few weeks." Shrugging slightly, it was a topic that neither of them really talked about. Daphne just assumed when the feeling was right, it would just happen. Though, at this point, she was as comfortable as she could be with a man she's been forcibly married to for four years could ever be.

Nikolas' eyebrows raised in unison, sharply, and he pressed his lips together, if only to contain a laugh. He couldn't help but wondering if his mother hadn't been talking with Daphne's. Ursula Vaisey often spoke of Daphne's mother somewhat disparagingly - the woman's lack of a career and her tendency toward gaudiness had never quite endeared her to the Vaisey matriarch. The thought of the two women gabbing about the possibility of grandchildren was laughable.

The effort to keep from laughing didn't last long, though Nikolas did at least manage to tone it down to a chuckle. "Come back pregnant? Merlin." He laughed again, perhaps a bit nervously. "That's rich. My mother did the same, actually. I got it yesterday. I was going to show you, but I wasn't sure if you'd find it as funny as I do."

He looked at the comb, only casually processing that it was a very nice hairpiece and probably would suit Astoria much better. That, and on actually handling those earrings, they had seemed oddly light - rather telling of their authenticity.

"Our parents are awfully presumptuous, aren't they?" Nikolas looked at Daphne curiously, gauging her reaction.

Daphne's head tilted slightly as he chuckled, her lips curling into an amused smile. "I'm almost positive it was likely instigated by my mother, or father." Shaking her head, she looked at the man behind the cart who wrapped up her necklace with a pretty green ribbon. Taking the package from him, she nodded.

"I don't have the heart to tell mother she's asking too much of me. I'm not the child bearing type of woman." Placing her hands on her hips she ran her nails over her sides. "This body is not made to bear children, I'm sorry, Nikolas, if that's the type of woman you were intending to marry." She teased him, as she snickered. "Besides, at the sluggish pace that we're moving, by the time we actually get to... that I likely won't be able to have children."

Daphne paused, "Not that I mind, we haven't even kissed, yet. Why would they think I would come home pregnant?" She added quickly, "I mean, it's not a big deal, completely understandable. I don't mind. I'm probably not easy to..." Voice trailed off as she frown slightly, she realized she was rambling and returned her attention to the jewelry on the cart.

Another laugh issued, this time void of nervousness. This whole thing still seemed preposterous at times. It felt like they were playing at a marriage, putting on a show for their parents and treating it like a private joke. As much as they appreciated one another now, sometimes Nikolas couldn't quite figure out why they hadn't moved beyond that. He knew there were things you couldn't force, and affection was definitely one of them.

Still, he realized that he didn't really believe that it was impossible for him to develop feelings for Daphne. It hadn't happened yet, but Nikolas supposed it could. They were just so young. And she still didn't seem to give herself enough credit.

"Well, realistically, we'll probably have to give them an heir at some point." He'd said is casually, as he might if discussing a Quidditch match, though the idea of that sort of responsibility still rankled him. Nikolas let a moment pass, then tried to break the tension with a bemused grin as he nudged Daphne gently. "That'd have to be a hell of a kiss, to get you pregnant."

Perhaps that was one of her faults, she never did give herself enough credit. It's not like she was a modest girl, she just felt it was easier to come off as passive than to take credit for everything. It was likely not a good trait to possess, it just made Daphne seem like she didn't care most of the time. In the end though, that was likely the purpose.

Daphne smirked and eyed him closely, "Obviously my mother has complete and utter faith in your magical impregnating kisses. I have my doubts..." Was that almost a challenge? Arching a finely sculpted brow, Daphne placed the wrapped packages in her bag and moved away from the cart. Patting Nikolas' shoulder, she brushed close against him and just smirked. "It's all right, I understand."

Oh, Daphne was just teasing him now. Her intentions weren't completely clear, and while she knew she could never do what her parents request - at least not by the time they return back home - it did make her wonder if they would ever get that way. Married for four years, most couples were popping out babies, Daphne and Nikolas were barely even hugging. Their relationship was something that always lingered in the back of Daphne's mind, but it never seemed odd considering the circumstances.

"Oh, that's very understanding of you," Nikolas quipped, strolling along beside her after she had paid.

As they meandered away from the cart, his mind began working something out, and he wasn't sure how he felt about it. They teased each other like this fairly frequently, but it always seemed to come to a sudden end, an awkward silence usually following. Maybe today would be different. They were talking about it, at least, and seemed at ease to make light of the topic. And it would hardly be the first time he'd kissed anyone. Just Daphne. He wasn't sure if she wanted him to, but sometimes it seemed like she was testing him.

Let it be an afternoon for testing things, then. Spying a little alcove near a stand of flower, Nikolas grabbed her wrist again and indicated that she should follow him over. There was a mischievous look on his face, but he was doubtful. "Wait up, come over here."

"I know, it's one of my numerous endearing characteristics." A bemused grin curled on her lips, as she fell silent. That usual silence that came along with the teasing was slowly settling in. Daphne was a little crestfallen, it wasn't often that she got playful that when it just died out like it usually did she felt a little disappointed.

Blue gaze watched as they passed by a few more carts, studying the items passively. Nothing really screamed out towards Daphne, and she began to wonder if this was going to end their shopping afternoon. It was all the same, her feel were starting to hurt, and in her stiletto heels that was expected.

Her attention was immediately pulled away from the carts to catch that mischievous look on Nikolas' face as he tugged her towards an alcove. Looking at him curiously, she allowed him to guide her to the alcove by the flowers. "What?" Stepping into the shade of the alcove, she leaned against the bricks, "Merlin, doesn't this seem familiar." Smirking slightly, she watched Nikolas, inwardly wondering why he wanted to stop by this alcove. She found it amusing that the two of them more than often found themselves together in alcoves. In Hogwarts that seemed to be a normal thing for them... it usually lead to meaningful leaps and bounds in their.... whatever they had. The first time it was after the spider attack, the last time it was to rest after fighting Death Eaters. Now? Did he just want to reminisce?

That point hadn't occurred to Nikolas, but Daphne was right. Somehow they had often managed to wind up alone in secluded spots while at school, and those times usually saw them actually getting on. It hadn't been his intention now - he just didn't think it would behoove either of them to make a scene in the middle of a street crowded with busy shoppers and tourists. If it was fitting, though, who was he to argue?

"It's interesting, I'll give you that." Suddenly Nikolas wasn't really thinking all that much about whether this was a good idea, or even the right moment for it. What was the worst that could happen? It wasn't as though the idea hadn't come up before. As far as he was concerned, it was about time someone did something about it. With as little pretense as was possible by this point, Nikolas leaned forward and, a hand lightly moving to the side of her face, kissed Daphne.

Whoa! Daphne's eyes went very wide as she realized that Nikolas was actually leaning forward. A hand raised, almost instinctively, to rest over his as it moved to the side of her face. The moment his lips touched hers, she had to tell herself to breathe. Daphne couldn't tell if it was shock or anxiety that had her heart racing in her chest, and threatening to pound out of her ears. The entire marketplace faded away and the sounds became muffled as all she could hear, feel and see was Nikolas kissing her.

Eyes slowly closed as she felt herself easing into the kiss. This wasn't so bad, actually. He wasn't a bad kisser and Merlin, now she felt silly for actually thinking he wouldn't take the bait. Her cheeks turned a fiery crimson against his hand, as her fingers trailed down from his hand to lace into the front of his shirt just slightly. It was more so to keep herself steady, as she could sense those tell-tale signs that she might actually go weak in the knees - whether it was because of the kiss or her shoes was up for debate.

It didn't seem as though Daphne was about to break away or, worse, slap him, so Nikolas couldn't see the harm in keeping things moving along. They were in public, for Merlin's sake, he knew nothing was going to progress too far, which made him perhaps a bit braver than he might have been if this were the hotel. Out here, it didn't matter whether either of them wanted to take this any further - they couldn't do much more than this where they were, which made it safe to continue, he reasoned.

The hand that wasn't resting on her cheek moved to the small of her back, pulling her closer almost imperceptibly. He rather liked the feeling of her lips against his, come to think of it. Nikolas wasn't sure how he had assumed it might be to kiss Daphne, but he wasn't regretting it. After some time had passed, he didn't think it was very long, he felt her stumble slightly, probably from her shoes and his moving her closer.

Nikolas broke away, not abruptly, but to make sure that she wasn't about to trip. "Someone should have worn different shoes," he teased, his hands settling near her hips.

Years ago is Nikolas tried this move it was highly possible she would have smacked him, and hexed him and ran away - but now? Now she was getting used to Nikolas and being married to him and she actually welcomed his kiss. It only helped that he was a bloody good kisser. Feeling his hand press against the small of her back, she gasped slightly against his lips. As he pulled her closer, her fingers laced a little tighter into his shirt. Her hand lifting to light trace her finger tips along his jaw.

However, as he began to pull back, Daphne felt herself leaning against him attempting to follow his lips. Eyes fluttered open as he spoke, and she could just smirk, "Someone should have warned me they would be kissing me in the middle of a Spanish market." She teased back.

Leaning forward just slightly, she kissed his chin. "Next time you just have to ask, though, I could used to this taking whenever you please."
