WHO: Effie Alderton & Aiden Lynch
WHAT: Hoping to witness a brawl at The Troll's Head
WHERE: Knockturn Alley, Troll's Head Pub
WHEN: 22 June 2003, mid-afternoon
WARNINGS/RATING/STATUS: PG-13?  Incomplete.

It was a beautiful afternoon in June.  The sort of day that saw people strolling outside simply for the sake of enjoying the weather, nowhere in particular to get to.  Families and friends picnicked in Victory Park, enjoying the sight of the recently unveiled statue.  Even harried commuters seemed to have a slight lull in their step, as if their destination was perhaps not as important as usual.

For her part, Effie Alderton was making a beeline for Knockturn Alley.  The fineness of the day seemed somewhat dimmed as she turned off of the main street in Diagon Alley, as though the seedy reputation of the place applied even to its weather conditions.  She hardly seemed to notice, though.  There was the bright prospect of a drink at the Troll's Head, and with company she expected would be as enjoyable as it had proven to be in the past.  Admittedly, Effie never drank alcohol anymore, but she always managed to find something to drink wherever she went.  That, and it was easier to enjoy watching the fights that always broke out here with her head clear.

She drew up to the entrance of the bar.  A very tall, slender figure was hovering near the door - she was quite pale and was very pointedly sticking to the shade of a half-collapsed awning.  Her eyes wandered over Effie appraisingly, who returned her look before leaning against the building to wait for Aiden.  She dug into her pockets and pulled out a Galleon, flipping it high into the air and slapping it onto the back of her hand to make the time go faster.  The original plan was to keep count of how many times it landed heads or tails, but Effie lost count after the sixth flip.

It was a beautiful day, if you asked Aiden. The sun was shining, he had a World Cup to look forward to and Aiden had a rendezvous with an attractive women who was sure not to disappoint in him the slightest.

He apparated to a point just outside The Leaky Cauldron and opted to walk the remained of the day, enjoying the feel of the afternoon sun as he sauntered lazily towards his destination. He knew his companion wouldn't mind a short wait and his leisurely place allowed him to enjoy the walk.

Eventually, though, he did catch sight of the girl as she flipped the galleon in front of her.

"That bored without me, love that you had to resort to flipping a coin?" he teased as he bent from behind her, his lips hovering less than an inch from her ear.

"Not bored," she said back absently, apparently still quite focused on her activity. "Trying to see if it lands more heads or tails." The coin landed one last time and she glanced at it briefly before turning to face Aiden, obviously not phased by the invasion of space. There was a wide smile on her lips. "I lost count."

Effie pushed off from the wall and moved toward the door, giving the vampire one last look before opening it. It had been possible to hear the noise within from the windows, but with the door ajar a wealth of sound poured out into the street - a clamor of music, shouting, laughter, and chairs scraping the floor.

She looked at Aiden. "What are you going to buy me?"

"Isn't that the very definition of boredom?" he teased. He was grinning, though, amused. Effie was a little on the odd side, but in a way that was a lot of fun. He knew they be having a great time together.

Aiden moved a little more quickly, grabbing the door to hold it open and gesturing for her to go in ahead of him. "Oh, I have to buy you something? I didn't realize the was part of the deal."

He was joking, of course, and would glad get her anything she wanted. Aiden Lynch was a gentleman. Some of the time.

Effie nodded curtly and stepped through the door. There was an overpowering smell of smoke and stale beer. It was hardly the most welcoming establishment, but she always thought it had a strange charm.

Slipping her arm through Aiden's, she bumped him playfully with her shoulder.

"Ohh, I thought you knew. That's part of the 'being a gentleman' thing. Just one drink, though." She unlinked their arms and wove through the crowds toward the bar. "Although, I'll buy you one after, so it's all evened up."

Aiden liked that smell of smoke and stale beer. Maybe that made him a deviant of some sort, but there was something he found welcoming about it and he was smiling as they made their way inside.

"Well, as long as you'll be making it worth my while later, I'll buy you whatever you like," he returned suggestively. Of course, he'd claim to be talking about her buying him a drink in return, but he was sure she would know what he really meant.

"Mr. Lynch!" Effie spun on her heel and leaned her back against the bar, crossing her arms over her chest. Her face held an expression that seemed to try for indignation, but was far too amused to be taken seriously. "I think we both know that depends on how good a drink you buy me."

She waggled her eyebrows and grinned broadly. Pulling out on of the bar stools, she hoisted herself up and took a seat. "Hmmm..." Effie drummed her fingers on the bar. "Do you think they'll make fun of me if I order something without alcohol in it?"

Aiden merely grinned at her. He leaned in closer, bending until his lips were an inch or so away from her ear. "I think you'll find, Miss Alderton, that I only ever buy you the best of drinks." His tone dripped with innuendo and he was smirking as he pulled back again.

A moment later, Effie was situating herself on one of the stools and Aiden followed suit, climbing onto the one next to her.

"I think they might a bit. People rarely come into these places to not get smashed." He gave a little shrug. "I think you should get whatever you want, though. Fuck what anyone else thinks."
