Nikolas knew full well that she was probably trying to be nice - he was more at fault than he wanted to admit. But had he been in her place, he would probably have avoided her, too. Or just ignored it altogether. "I mean, it was probably better that you were."
Pressing his lips together, he hoped that hadn't sounded as though he'd wanted her to be absent. He had missed her presence over the last week. Not that they really spent all that much time together, but it was more knowing there was now a good reason for them not to.
